nice explanation. now it makes sense. this is definitely a game changer. i remember one of my coaches 20 years ago showed me the "center step" (that's what he was calling it), some kind of euro step, but the first step was a double footed contact with a feint for a pull-up, then you leap with the second step. it looked weird but it was legal to the refs. although, it's quite ancient, never seen players of my generation or below doing it. Note: I edited the comment because I made mistake.

The key fact is --- if a player is running forwards for a layup and takes the zero step + the gather step AND THEN JUMPS AND STOPS WITH BOTH FEET ON THE GROUND TO TAKE A JUMP SHOT he would be called for traveling every single time. So in other words, the concept of "if you can do it forward why can't you do it backwards" is precisely what proves this is traveling. If Harden's move is performed forwards it is an undisputed traveling violation.

The zero step has literally been a thing since the 1950's. Basically every drive to the basket that ends in a layup has a step on the gather ( the zero step) and two more after. That's been true since basketball got popular. So refs consider it the last step of the dribble , and the next steps as the counted ones. Players exploiting that interpretation of the rules has occurred, and rules to legitimize that interpretation have been added, but its been officiated that way since 1950.

Great Break downl.. This is ALL that i have explain to people. The stretching your live dribble until its illegal even to your own eyes but to those who never SEEN it before will almost bet their life that its a travel. What ppl call the eurostep, I was doing before that name was even conceived. The point of me saying that is.. I use to suspend the ball like a hesitation and dibble again in one instance.. then do it again but gather with the ball in the same hand and drive to the basket while taking two giants steps. Some folks swore it was a travel.. I then did it with an in and out after I master it.. and all one dude did once was stole it from me because he was shorter and faster than me and knew my moves to an extent. So I watched myself around him.. but others couldn't defend it.

Question about the 0 steps. I used to play and see basketball a lot during the nineties. There was no such thing about difficulties to see when the player begins his layup for the referee at the time. HeyBro I don’t think they’re emotional. I think they’re just used to different rules and the changing in the way the game was called. For example, a few years ago and especially the early to mid 2000’s and before this is definitely a travel but again the way the game is called evolved. For example, back in the 1960’s, even though it wasn’t an listed rule change, 90 degree turning of the wrist when dribbling were illegal. Gather steps were also illegal. So by today’s rules it isn’t but some people haven’t adjusted to the change in the emphasis of officiating.

It's important to note that the gather step only applies to progressing players. If the player ends the dribble with both feet on the ground instead of 1 foot, he is not progressing and gets only 1 more step.
@adfraggs
2 жыл бұрын
I still don't see that this lines up with the actual wording of the NBA rules. I'm referring specifically to this video, not any actual game footage. The slow-motion step back is shown quite a few times but I have it frozen at 6:00 right now. There is clearly a moment where the ball is held in both hands. At this point, according to the rules, the ball is "gathered" and the dribble is no longer live. Right foot (back) is on the ground. Left foot (front) is fractionally in the air. AFTER this the left foot hits the ground. According to the rules this is the first step. It's written like this: "The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor after the player gathers the ball". This doesn't mean the "gather step" (there is no such thing mentioned in the rules), it means the first of the two allowed steps. But Jesse's left foot hits the ground, he uses it to push back, then he takes two additional steps in the shooting motion. That left foot step is definitely AFTER the ball has been gathered. So it's a travel. What's happening in the NBA is primarily players delaying that moment where the ball contacts their second hand. They scoop it, high bounce it or exaggerate the motion, so that it can be argued that they have not finished the dribble. That's fair enough, they are pushing the boundary of the rule and it takes skill and timing to get it right. But what's also happening is that NBA refs are extremely lenient on the interpretation, and there are mostly definitely times when players don't get it right, they gather the ball in both hands, and then still take 3 steps. That shouldn't be a surprise, it's a tough move to pull off. The problem for me is that the lenient interpretation is now becoming normal and it's changing the entire shape of the games. Fans are not idiots and in many cases it IS a travel, it just doesn't get called.
@6xygoose

It's running backwards and shooting not a step back. You can call me a hater but it's ridiculous this is allowed in the NBA when there are travels every possession they already don't call. IMO it should be illegal as in the gather step shouldn't count when moving backwards. Reason is that if player A does gather step backwards, subsequently, defender B has to step forward to close the gap. However, by that point player A is already jump shooting and many times falling forwards due to momemtum. Since defender B is still in a forward motion to close the gap, a foul will be called with not giving the player A a landing zone. I understand why gather step is important especially when driving as it is too difficult to determine the end of a live dribble. However it should not be applied to a fade away due to jump shooter coming forward.
@jeffgrzybowski5322
4 жыл бұрын
Going forward on a layup or one-foot take off floater, the player does not return the pivot foot to the ground hence no travel. On Harden's move, the pivot foot does return to the ground, which you mentioned so the NBA'S explanation doesn't make sense. They might as well change to rule that while moving backwards or sideways, a player may return the pivot to the ground then jump off both feet but can't pivot like the one-foot take then simultaneously landing on both feet. The would be legal. Push off of one foot while gathering then land on both feet simultaneously then jump and shoot.

For 2:17, refs can keep counting until the player stops dribbling, if the player gathers/shoots/passes the ball with two more step travelled, that is a foul, else, doesn't count for travelling. That is also fair for the defender, because if the defender sees the opposite taking many steps without shooting/gathering/passing, he/she can pretty much know that the attacker will keep dribbling, or he/she wilI make a foul.

Is it about the timing or double holding or single handedly carrying the ball at this step? The fact is there are three steps to do any moves post the dribble but the lingo says it's 0 step and the other 2 steps while- to dumb it down it's one-two-three steps in totality right coach? Most people's issue isn't with this as done in this video (which is correct). Harden does this correctly most of the time. But he also does this incorrectly by gathering the ball while his pushoff foot is still planted, then taking the step back into both feet planted for the shot. Its so quick maybe the refs can't see it, but it's a travel. It happens almost every game that Harden plays in but never gets called because it looks so close to the legal version. You guys are misunderstanding the rules. And the NBA is rigged and isn't concerned about enforcing travels anyways so they don't care. But the rules are the rules. Once you stop your dribble and bring the ball into your hands, or gather the ball, the foot you land on is your pivot foot and you can't jump off of your pivot and land onto your other foot. That IS a travel. You can jump stop off your pivot foot if you are in motion but you MUST land on both feet simultaneously bringing yourself to a complete STOP hence the name jump stop. You can't point to the NBA not calling them correctly as proof that it's legal. That's like saying that cops don't pull over everyone for speeding so speeding is not illegal. Stop it. The rules are the rules. Understand them.

Well, during lay up shot you have to me in motion, if you stop in motion isnt it a travel but the this you said backward layup its seems in the end you stops.

I know according NBA rules that's legal... but making memes on it is so much fun 😂🤷. For the rules I play with though, it's a travel. Even though I play streetball. Funny how I can get away with doing carries most of the time, but not this move 😂

The problem is with that gray area he explains around 1:15 when it comes to completition of the dribble. The rules need to be more specific otherwise it's up to the refs to decide when the steps start counting. I know for sure this is not allowed in Europe which is funny cause NBA and FIBA have the same travelling rules now.

When you pick the ball up you establish 1 or 2 pivot feet. If the pivot foot leaves the ground and comes down, it is a travel.... has that changed?

They put it in because you have these big, fast strong athletes running at full speed and they don't want them getting injured by forcing them to a complete stop in one step.

Can you make a video explaining if Lebrons bucket to make the score 103 in the hawks-lakers games was a travel or not? In my opinion, Lebron gathers as he lands on 1 foot and then takes a two more steps. I don’t think it’s a travel, but I’m really curious as to how the rules for a “gather step” work when in midair.

Just an evolution of the rules, once a upon a time, you couldn't have your hand on the side of the ball and roll it to the top, that was carrying, but that went away when Magic, Bird and Isiah showed up and did it constantly.

I dont really care if people beat me on step back, though. Because no-professional hooper usually have a very low % of htting them, (its a tough shot even when no one is gaurding). Its somehow like fadeaway, people.have say 25%- chance of hitting when no one is gaurding. I would just gaurd the easy shot, let them take light contested tough shot.

Can you make a video on how to get pass defenders who don't play tight defense. I can get pass tight defense because they bite on the crossover.but when there not playing tight defense I'm forced to shoot. I need to know because I want to get better.

Brother so please ask nba one question, players can move untill the ball is gathered, then the players can run 3 to 4 steps keeping the ball in dribbling position without palming it or holding then when they will reach 3 point line there xan they gather the ball and again go for 0 1 2 steps, it ll be legal isn't it

So in 2009 the NBA came up with this gather step crap and it took awhile to catch on. Now FIBA has endorsed it in 2018. So yes, it is traveling made legal I guess to "so call" improve the game, but it really stinks...It is traveling, you are taking 3 steps after the last dribble. All these nba moves can be made with 2 steps or less why give em a third. It is giving the offensive player an edge that is unfair to the defensive player. These type of rule changes over the last 10 years or so have really hurt the game in my opinion.

Bro you doing that move different... be real. There is zero motion I'm hardens dribbling. Harden picks up the ball and take 4 steps. That's my beef. Thanks for trying though

It's a travel. But since its making James Harden good at the NBA and the NBA is making money out of it. So who cares right? The game was about being good at the fundamentals while getting buckets. But now it's all about looking good with the highlights.

NBA players aren't regular basketball players. These dudes are literally in the gym with all type of trainers almost year around doing the same move over and over all day. Shooting jumpshots all day. That's why when they are up against regular hoopers; nba players that you didn't even know could shoot are out there knocking down 3s and crossing people up like it's nothing.
