Terrific repair video. Thanks. I love your hoses and hose manifold. Brilliant use of cardboard! My plan is a French catamaran, but my dream is a Dutch one made of aluminum.

Thanks for the compliment! As for the cardboard I got a bit lucky. The box came with the trough hulls and it just fitted all together ;). Love it when that happens.... French boatbuilders are also very good. Catamaran we did not consider as it's a bit unhandy in our place. Dutch boats (builders) indeed do have a pretty decent reputation themselves. Good luck with the plan and planning!

Checked your channel, quite a project you've undertaken. Subscribed but will do a backtrack and see some of your vids. My previous ship was a steel one and it had the seem "box-keel". Stuffed with Iron and cement... not the easiest. Might make a special on that one day.

No worries, know the feeling. KZitem can also take a lot of time indeed! Cruising in Corona times. Feels like some additional hurdles. Or are you around EU?

Nice boat, there is one for sale now a beauty. Just one thing, your hull should be thicker than the pizza crust, not the other way.😊

Hi, thank so much for this videos. Im wondering why has happened this failure ( corrosion). May be you have said and I didnt catch it. ( my english is not good). Im looking for an aluminium hull boat and this is a good point to pay attention. Thanks again and cheers from the Patagonia.

Hi Jorge, that I would not have guessed, to be able to “help” somebody in Patagonia! Pretty amazing. As for the cause: it could have been the water preserving stuff he did in the tanks and it could also have been the rvs bolts reacting with the water/ aluminium. The first is the most likely. But for sure I probably will never know…. Checking by opening up the tanks is knowing. The skin thickness measuring thingy is not picking up the spots. And if so you might also have a mis measure. Actually the whole skin thickness exercise is a bit of a useless thing with this kind of corrosion. Good luck with your search man! Your sailing area must be amazing!!

Hello ,good morning Thanks for sharing this video and your experiences Your boat is beautiful and new again 👍 one question, is possible to use plastic water tanks in aluminium sailboats? im not sure if plástic tanks can handle bumps and big impacts in sailbots Tks 👍💯

Hi Omar, apologies for the late reply! Thanks for the compliment and as for your questions, I guess you could use plastic watertanks. A friend of mine with a very similar boat placed water bags from plastic. However, I did not want this because I want to use all the available space. The paint however is a bit like plastic. So should be ok but agree for the bumps, try to make it fit as good as possible.

Can you tell me exactly what you used for the inside of the water tanks... the Sigma paint?
@SailingWindRose
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kilted Skipper, I had to look that one up. We used Sigma Guard CSF 585, a special paint for drinkwatertanks. Does this help?

how did you know it was corroded in the water tanks and were tanks painted inside before the corrosion?
@SailingWindRose
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, There was all sorts of junk in the tanks. Mostly a white gel like substance. Besides that there were put holes where you could see the metal was eaten. It clearly was not clean aluminium. Jw

I used that blue paint also, really toxic paint. I think you have flush the tanks also several times before use.

Hi Berend, we did indeed. According to the technical data sheet we had to have them filled for 40 (? about?) days and then rinse them with regular water. I've added some dish washer soap. Not a lot, just a bit. Now it's perfect. Did replace the nylon bolts btw. but a future episode on that is on it's way.
