Wow, I was driving a 2006 Trailblazer and had my hand on the shifter. All of a sudden, the shifter moved freely. When I stopped and pushed button to put in park, the shifter locked in the park position. After watching this video, I decided to check the linkage out. I really could not get all the way under without jacking up. So, I felt and found the linkage off, but not missing pieces. So I had to manually push the linkage arm in the park position to snap the linkage back on. Got in and drove it off! Wow, I was worried! Now I will buy the bushing kit so when I have a chance to get under there, I will replace them. Thanks for the video! (PS, the trailblazer being in drive when I cut it off, I could not open the doors to get out... Pushed the lock and unlock door twice and the door would open.)

I had a third scenario where it was stuck in Park (shifter wouldn't move to R, N, etc.) and the fuse was bad (as mentioned in the video) but each new fuse I added would get blown immediately. So in this case it was the shift interlock solenoid going bad. (It's the device that keeps you from shifting out of Park without pressing the brake, hidden under the center console beneath the gear shifter. ) You can remove or replace it to get back on the road.

I can now put the car in gear but when I try to put it back in park again the hand shifter is loose again and I have to get back under the truck to manually put it back in park with my hand and this allows the process to repeat itself. @@thedjcar I purchased a new bushing kit and reconnected it. Do you think a broken cable housing could be causing this? I can pull it in gear from park but it's no retraction on the way back to park. If I want that I have to do it by hand from under the truck.

@@thedjcar Everything is good now. Turns out my shifting cable housing was broken. So I completely customized the entire situation. I bought a new shifting cable installed it and used a small c-clamp with a rubber boot on it to wrap around the transmission shifting arm and attached it to the cable using a small bolt with a locknut instead of reattaching the plastic bushing. Then in the area where the cable goes back into the bracket instead of using that little metal clip that holds the cable in place I simply used two small adjustable metal pipe clamps to secure it in place and it works. The only way it's coming apart now is if I go back under the Humvee and unscrew it. Now I've eliminated all accidents and surprises while driving on the hwy. It's not perfect but it works and proves to be far superior to what the manufacturers did in my opinion. I'm happy with it bud for sure 💪😎💪👍😁👌

Damn I just saw this comment. First things first: Always check every single fuse and if any are blown, replace them. Second: When you turn the key, if it’s not clicking repeatedly, then check they battery. Third: If the battery is good 👍🏼 and you still don’t here repeated clicking, then it’s either your starter or ignition. You can check to see if the starter is getting power with a multimeter. While someone is turning the key, see if the starter is getting current. If not 12v, then you have a faulty starter. If getting 12v, then it’s 100% the ignition switch. All of these parts are roughly $50 or less
