VN24 - 02/03/2021 - Holzwickede (Unna district) / Germany - A serious traffic accident occurred on the A1 freeway in the southbound direction on Wednesday (February 3) between the Dortmund/Unna freeway intersection and the Lichtendorf Rest Area. Two truck drivers were seriously injured. According to initial investigations, a 43-year-old driver was traveling with his semi-truck on the right lane of the A1 in the direction of Cologne at around 1:50 pm. A few miles before the Lichtendorf service area, he apparently overlooked the end of a traffic jam and crashed into the truck of a tractor-trailer driver, also 43 years old. This driver had previously recognized the danger of collision and attempted to swerve to the right onto the hard shoulder to prevent a collision. Nevertheless, the two trucks collided, with hundreds of liters of fuel leaking from ruptured tanks. Three other passenger cars were involved in the accident and were also damaged. Ambulances took the seriously injured truck drivers to nearby hospitals. All other road users remained uninjured. For the duration of the accident investigation and the recovery work, the right and middle lanes of the Cologne direction had to be closed for more than five hours. A rescue helicopter was also deployed.
