I look at representative examples of Celtic art from 800 BCE to the 12th century covering the Hallstatt, La Tène and Insular periods including the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.
I then look at the invasion of the Angles and Saxons and the establishment of an Anglo-Saxon culture and its art particularly the Sutton Hoo ship burial and the Staffordshire Hoard. I also look at the wonderful Alfred Jewel and Anglo-Saxon crosses described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "the greatest achievement of their date in the whole of Europe."
Finally, I consider all the periods of Viking art from the Oseberg ship burial to Ringerike and Urnes style metalwork.
I end with a reminder of the Romanesque style and Durham Cathedral and the dramatic change in culture following the Norman Conquest of 1066.
