Excellent dimensional information. In my personal application the .63 ga gets derailed/thrown much less and the bar groove doesn't clog as easily. Well presented video sir..

Thanks. I question everything so when I find something that seems overlooked, I like sharing the evidence.

Oregon presets are different between the. 050/.058 and the .063. Also handy to bump up to a thicker guage for a worn bar.

Excellent video, I always wondered if there was a difference in the kerf that would be cut but figured there wouldn't be. I really appreciate you filming and posting.

The wider top give the working area more strength, and reduced stretching. Stihl chains come pre-stretched. The numbers on the Stihl chain are taken from a metric sizing. 1.3 mm, versus 1.6 mm. That's why those numbers are stamped. If you look at any of the other pitch chains, like .325, you'll see the same numbers, it does not refer to 33rs, 33rm or other 3/8" designations, it only refers to the width of the drivers. Oregon uses totally different designations, for example, if the number was stamped with a 76, it meant that chain was a low profile 3/8", .050" width.

Interesting, I have never paid attention to that before. If Oregon is using 58 gauge stepped down, seems using rivet side tie strap for 63 gauge would be loose and a 58 gauge rivet side strap would be too tight with 63 gauge.

You're right. Oregon uses different links for 72/75. Stihl uses the same link for 33/36.

Can you use a .063 gauge on a saw that used a .050 gauge? Or do I need to change out the drive sprocket?

The bar has to match the guage. The sprocket just has to match the pitch.

Is there any benefit to using a 6 gauge over the 3 gauge? would it be any noticeable strength difference.

possibly a slight wear advantage with .63 being the drivers are slightly wider. personally I can't tell the difference in wear or stretch.

I am using 058 bar and chain and 063 chain fits exactly with same left/right play. Anyone tried this before? Is it ok to use?

is it a new bar or worn? it is only 4 thousandths difference.

The bar is new. I guess if it were a little bit worn it’s perfectly usable.
