I used to live just down the road from George in Cheshire in his fast cars and girls phase. What a player just magic feet. And man that pitch like so many in that era was like a ploughed field compared to now.I used be a Stretford Ender in 67-73 before football lost it soul. Happy days seeing Best Law and Charlton.

If you consider the pitches they played on then, with the ball bobbling all over the place. Bestie was incredible, him and Pele have to be the best ever

@@benardboateng8291 Fair point, he does seem to get kicked more than any other player these days. But it was much worse in the 60s and 70s - he would have been booted out of the game completely then.

@@robicenco1 it doesn't mean they don't get red and yellow cards. The game is more than 7x hard right now because of the tactical improvement, determination to win and more.

Apart from George Best's performance, this game shows Northampton Town at the end of their rise from the 4th Division (1960-61) up to the 1st Division (1965-66) and back the way down to the 4th Division (1969-70) in the space of just 10 seasons.

Shame what happened to Northampton wasn't it? 4th div to 1st div and straight back to 4th. I can't think of any other teams that have done that since. Though I could be wrong of course.

I was at this game. Best had been suspended for several weeks and this was his first game back. He wasn't really match fit but nobody expected that performance. Town's goalie that day was Kim Book, brother of City's captain, Tony Book.

Best had a history of problems with referees. In 1970, he was sent off while playing for Northern Ireland against Scotland after he threw a lump of mud at the referee. If memory serves, it was during the 70-71 season that he was sent off at Stamford Bridge for calling the ref a 'fucking disgrace' during a 3-2 win for United.
