This is Ofra's self-banned and never officially published album "Queen In Exile". Originally recorded in 1995 for BMG Ariola München. She wrote most of the songs on this album. But they wanted Ofra and Bezalel to work with people who tried to make Ofra to be a popstar and they didn't like it, so they cancelled the deal instead. Fortunately we can still enjoy this masterpiece.
We provide full English translations for the mixed language songs.
Scheherazade is a major female character and the storyteller in the frame narrative of the Middle Eastern collection of tales known as the One Thousand and One Nights. The story goes that the monarch Shahryar, on discovering that his first wife was unfaithful to him, resolved to marry a new virgin every day and to have her beheaded the next morning before she could dishonour him. Eventually the vizier could find no more virgins of noble blood and, against her father's wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to marry the king. Once in the king's chambers, Scheherazade asked if she might bid one last farewell to her beloved younger sister, Dunyazad, who had secretly been prepared to ask Scheherazade to tell a story during the long night. Thus the king kept Scheherazade alive day by day, as he eagerly anticipated the conclusion of each previous night's story. At the end of 1,001 nights, and 1,000 stories, Scheherazade finally told the king that she had no more tales to tell him. During the preceding 1,001 nights, however, the king had fallen in love with Scheherazade. He wisely spared her life permanently and made her his queen.
Lyrics (English translation):
I prayed, oh I wished, I wished
I prayed, oh I wished, I wished
I prayed, oh I wished, I wished
But He didn't answer my wishes
Fear was in her eyes
A thousand and one nights
Fear was in her eyes
Just to stay alive
She will never, never come back
Oh, I want to see her one day
She will never, never come back
Oh, I want to see her one day
Night after night
A thousand nights
Scheherazade
Oh, what a night
A thousand nights
Scheherazade
She cast a spell on him now
Oh, his love for her was tender
Love can be so suicidal
Oh, I want to see her one day
She will never, never come back
Oh, I want to see her one day
She will never, never come back
Oh, I want to see her one day
Night after night
A thousand nights
Scheherazade
Oh, what a night
A thousand nights
Scheherazade
