Hello my friends! It's been so long since the last video.. I'm glad that i'm finally back. As you can noticed on my instagram profile, last time i was working on a few strike block planes. With every new plane my first strike block was getting uglier, so there was only one way - refreshing! During the process i've changed the iron for longer and a little bit wider. For the new wedge and mouth closer i've used a piece of pear wood. As you can see in the video i've used new solution - vacuum chamber. I'm gonna soak my planes with boiled linseed oil before finishing - that will reduce the tendency to moisture absorbing. You can ask - reduce to what extent? This is to be checked - let me know if you will like to watch that kind of video, with different kind of woods. For the finish i've used two coats of osmo 3032 and rubbing with steel wool after each coat. If you got any questions feel free to wrtie a comment. Oh, one important thing - i decided to change my daily job for fulltime planemaking :) I'll start since 01 november :) Thank you for your time! Stavros

You may be able to get away with using either linseed oil or polymerized linseed oil with the vacuum method. The residual air plus the solvent (e.g. turpentine, acetone, mineral spirits, xylene) in boiled linseed oil are likely causing the excessive bubbling over.

Might look into something called the "London finish": mix varnish with paint thinner 50/50, put in a layer let it dry, next layer wet sand with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, next 2-3 layers wet sand with 600 grit wet/dry, sand with the 600 grit and clean before applying a final layer. The slurry from the wet sanding blocks up the wood pores. I use this on tool handles and IME it's a tough, sweat-proof finish.

I read from other woodworkers that boiled linseed oil does not polymerize inside the wood, since there is no oxygen, and over time it kept oozing out of the pores making the finished item tacky. What is your experience with the plane after vacuum soaking?
@StavrosGakos
Жыл бұрын
Blo mixed with terpentine have that tendency, i've read about it in Julian Goodacre (bagpipe maker) blog. He wrote that he should wipe off the surface of soaked wood every day for abouth a month, until the oil will get polimeryzation. I've used pure linseed varnish (blo), wich is very dense and quickly get polimeryzation, I think it will not penetrate whole wood. Even if the blo is not dry inside, it is covered by one layer of dry oil and two - three coats of osmo. I had to wipe of all the parts only when I take them out of vacuum chamber. Later they were lay a few days without any leak, they were dry - I think it is a good sign. Maybe softer woods gets more oil, and get it back during polimeryzation, but pear wood not. I'm gonna make some test video.

Good afternoon Master Gakos, I would like to ask your advice. Somehow, by popular demand, you filmed a video on how to sharpen blades. I tried to repeat your method, but it always turns out either a skew on one side of the blade or even a lens. Perhaps you could advise something or make a video for beginner carpenters, because sharpening has not yet bypassed anyone who works with wood. With deep respect, Maltiz.
