I always put my older seal on top of the new seals and then hammer the crap out of the old seal with a pvc tubing.... 100% assurance that my new seals will not get damaged.... No need to bevel the tubing whatsoever

Double sided tape wrapped around the fork tube also works well.

Over recent years more and more bikes come with up side down forks, I'm guessing that this wouldn't work with them because you wouldn't be able to slide anything over the end due to the mounting bracket that's attached at the end??

Slice the tube in half and then use the hose clamp to bring it back together. You now have 2 clamshells like the $50 metal unit. Problem solved!
