They had been looking to fire Mooch for quite a while. There were plenty of reports that he would be gone in 1998 if he lost the wild card game to the Packers. It took one of the biggest blown calls in NFL history and an all time redemption by Terrell Owens to keep his job

I have heard of those reports about 1998. As a Packers fan, we still have a grunge about that game. If we had gone on to play the Falcons, that probably would have been a toss up. Even if we did beat them, no way we would have gotten past the Vikings in the Metrodome. They had our number that year and they were also the team that ended the Packers 21 game winning streak at Lambeau Field.

Also, there's an entire video by JaguarGator9 about retarded it was for Mariucci to basically fold on offense, and head to the locker room before the half, when there was an opportunity to score. You can see during this game the offensive personnel were visibly pissed, and the broadcasters called it out too. The 49ers were already facing a heavy 28-6 deficit, and Mariucci just wants to run out the clock after getting to their own 40. Frustrating.
