Mech, on the other hand, have a long history of migration that predates the arrival of the British in India. They are a branch of the Bodo tribe who are Tibeto-Burman in origin and speak a Tibeto-Chinese dialect. They originated in China, Tibet, Mongolia, and Siberia, while other researchers say they are Assamese autochtons.
The Bodos arrived in India via the Patkoi Hills, which lie between India and Burma, and subsequently spread across Assam, North Bengal, and sections of East Bengal. It is reported that they marched in diverse directions during their migration to India.
There is also a legend concerning the origins of the Mechs. According to the report, Mech and Limbu used to live together. They were expelled from India's northeastern portion, Burma, and Tibet. They escaped along the Himalayan foothills, arriving at the lowlands of today's Darjeeling district, which are thickly forested. They just stayed there for a short time. The Limbus had no desire to remain in that area. They began by cutting trees to make their way towards the hills. A few days later, the Meches arrived. They attempted to follow the trail but became disoriented and ended themselves to the Mechi River, which runs between Darjeeling and Nepal. Some of them preferred to reside near the Mechi River. They called themselves Meches or Mechias.
