In this part of Corinthians Paul makes it clear that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. Paul does not say that the message of the cross is not understood. It is understood and it is rejected as a foolish message by those who are perishing.
In Paul’s mind and thought to be perishing is to be blinded to one’s own destructive predicament (2 Corinthians 4:3 -4).
On the other hand, Paul knows that the message of the cross is the power of God to those who are being saved. This means Paul does not need to use clever words of wisdom to get his message across. Because Paul knows there are two groups of people those who are perishing on those who are being saved.
Paul uses the three tenses of being saved in the Corinthian context, because the Corinthians believe they are beyond the power of the cross. The three tenses are: we have been saved from the penalty of sin, we are saved from the power of sin, and we will be saved from the presence of sin at the appearing of Christ.
The Corinthians view of power was now in position, and status within the church. By abandoning the power of the cross there were power plays happening. Paul seeks to renew their understanding of God's power through the weakness of the cross.
