I think a big sign at the port as you first head to the gangway that reads, "Is your phone in Airplane Mode? Check with your mobile provider about coverage. Ask us about our WIFI package!" , or something like that, with a big Airplane Mode symbol in the centre would do the trick. Posters and plastic mountings are cheap, it would show that the cruise line cares, and is a fallback for if people blame them for their cell phone bills.

With all of the "apps" they tell you about and using the phone to access the planner you have to put your phone into airplane mode. It's listed all over the place, even before the apps they would advise "Turn off your cell phone, don't use it on a ship" It's even listed in your booking information. If people still don't see it in their papers and through the final booking/check in process a sign certainly isn't going to work. Folks don't see the signs exiting about staying on "ship time" or "no camo" even after it's listed in the Fun Times.

Not cruise-related, but my nephew had an unforeseen issue with his phone company when he called his landlady a couple of times, who lives in Australia. In the back of his mind, he knew where she lived, but over the years he had gotten used to just picking up the phone and having unlimited calling. My sister (whose phone plan he was on) called the company and asked if there was anything that could be done, and the operator switched their plan to an international one. It was a smaller amount to pay than the cost of the two calls, it covered those calls that month, and she switched it back to the original the following month. All that to say this: call your phone company instead of your cruise line!

Also I found out that if you are traveling in the Caribbean and you are on a US territory island such as St. Thomas or Puerto Rico there is no roaming charges any phone call you make is like as if you were in the United States but it has to be a US owned territory

Canada and Mexico are included in my plan, so in these countries I can use my phone like I do in the US and not incur any additional charges. The other countries, for example, Honduras, it would only cost me $10 for the whole day. I just keep Travel Pass activated on my plan and just check to see if the countries Im visiting are in their list. But, I immediately put my phone in airplane mode and activate the ships wifi once on the ship. Once in port, I turn off airplane mode, then turn it back on as soon as I reboard the ship.

So on my last cruise, one of the perks was a 350MB bundle each (mum and me) - I thought that wouldn't be enough, so I bought a 3GB package in advance. I understood that my phone would be using the 350MB first and then move onto the 3GB. But my 350 was going down at the speed of light, while for my mum it was lasting a really long time. That's when I realised that I hadn't put my Apple watch on airplane mode! Lesson learned! As I'm European and was cruising in Europe, the bundle that I use at home can also be used in the countries I went to - the only exception was when we went to Monaco, and the guide terrified us into putting our phones into airplane mode. I've decided that I'm going to buy an e-sim this year, so I'll use that in Monaco. As for the ship, I have a different bundle which gives both me and my mum 3GB each - and my watch will immediately go into airplane mode and stay there, lol. Re. the time when your ship waited 20 minutes and then had to leave, that's still better than the recent ship which not only did not wait for passengers (even though they'd missed the 'all aboard' time, not the departure time, for reasons of illness on shore), but refused calls from the harbormaster and emails from head office. I know that we had people who raced down the dock exactly two minutes before the ship left, and I'm sure they got a stern talking to by the captain, but they weren't left behind. These stories make me even more determined to only take excursions organised by the cruise line - I'm not going to be worrying about traffic jams or bus breakdowns etc - I'll let them do the worrying!

There are work arounds to be able to use the phone to text one another while on the ship - we had a large party and needed to meet up from time to time all throughout the cruise, but I can’t even remember what we did. I just remember it being complicated and we had to watch a video post several times to figure it out. The cruise line should definitely have instructions about how this all works.

Yes I think the cruise ships should post everywhere to turn airplane mode on. I always buy the cruise wifi and when I get on a ship, there are instructions on the embarkation sheet telling me to turn airplane mode ON. But other than that, I don’t hear any announcements or see any signs telling guests to do that. I’ve never had a problem with my Canadian phone carrier when I’ve put my phone on airplane mode. In ports, if I’m using the ship shore excursion, which I do 99% of the time, l leave my phone on airplane mode. Similarly, I leave it on airplane mode if I’m just checking out the cruise port after an excursion. Recently I was in Le Havre and I was taking the Bee Le Havre shuttle (a fantastic tour company that I highly recommend) for a downtown tour and then to take me to and from Honfleur, I did turn off airplane mode and pay the CDN $15 roaming. It was just much more convenient.

We used to live without cell phones... On my first cruise nobody had cell phones it wasn't a thing and we all had a great time in fact people would have a better time if they put their phones away.

I think that there should be a very big sign right before you board the ship. Also there should be at least 4 announcements for the first day and at least 2 on the second day. I don't think it would cost much for both of those things. A lot of people don't really know how or what a cellphone plan is and don't automatically know that if they go internation, they would get a very large bill when they came back.

It would be easy for the cruise director to make an announcement about the phones

I think the cruise company should put laminated notes in each cabin about this. We were just on MSC Seascape in April and this is the first time I’ve cruised for a few years. And this is also the first time that I had an Internet package. They don’t explain anything about the Internet package. We were traveling with friends and our friends did not have to put their phone on airplane mode. But when we had checked in with the gentleman, who does the Wi-Fi service, he told me to keep mine on airplane mode. However, when I was on airplane mode, I didn’t have the greatest service on the ship. And it was just to text our friends about meet ups and times to do things. A step-by-step instruction, and notes on why you need to do airplane mode would be very helpful.

In airplane mode, I'm surprised you had any service at all on the ship. I assume what you mean is that you re-enabled WIFI after selecting airplane mode?

The issue is not just international calling. Most ships have cellular at sea, you phone will connect like with any other tower. I always get messages (warnings) from T-Mobile that extreme charges will be incurred. This runs thru the ship satellite system. ATT has a cell at sea plan, the only one I’m aware of. I stay in airplane mode and use WiFi calling. No surprises then. But even if you bought an international plan, you’re not covered on the ship

I agree with everyone, a reminder from the cruise line to put all devices on airplane mode. It would be easy for them to put it in the daily bulletin.

Yes they should be announcing/communicating about phones and all devices in airplane mode. Every time I'm on an airplane they make that announcement so the cruise line could as well.

I only hold SIM card in my mobile phone with airplane mode. In other devices - iPad/Laptop - I remove SIM card to have no risk to forget about airplane mode. So there is just ship's WiFi possible. In port I put on my mobile phone, but in settings I lock data roaming/using mobile data networks. So, I can be reached just by old-school call and short message. I think, a lot of people are not aware, that apps on mobile phone run in background and use data volume.

Since we all need to have the app on our phones to do stuff on the cruise, it would help to have a big pop up reminding the person to use airplane mode. Have to do that anyway to use the Royal wifi.

We used AT&T at sea on our last cruise. It saves us a ton of money. Our first cruise my son used his phone to listen to music and we had a 1000.00 bill. It was only like 100.00 per person for the AT&T at sea. It worked great for us.

It would be a great idea for the cruise lines to have a Things to Know sheet in every cabin. As you said, there’s so many new cruisers and even experience cruisers that forget to put it on airplane mode as well as some of the other tips that you have brought up. We are given informational sheets for so many different items but this would be one that is invaluable.
