For thousands of years north American indigenous people lived here on the shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
For them Onguiaahra - Niagara - was their traditional meeting and hunting grounds, and where the thundering waters of Niagara Falls gave rise to many great myths and legends.
It was also a land soaked in battle and bloodshed.
Here, the Attawandaron fought the mighty Haudenosaunee, led by the powerful Seneca Nation, and they in turn fought the Mississauga - the Anishnabek. And then in the 17th century the first European settlers also laid claim to the land.
But it was also a place of peaceful alliances and long-standing traditions.
