Classical education means searching high and low for the best tools to equip kids to learn anything. The "grammar stage" describes the intellectual development of kids who are roughly in grades 5K-5. Each subject has its own grammar: history has dates, events, locations. The grammar of geography is maps, political borders, cities, rivers. The grammar of science is names and properties of things and systems we see in the world around us. Children in the grammar stage have a natural propensity to soak up information. We seek to take advantage of this to build a foundation for future learning, all in the context of the Church's vision for formation. Some of the tools and methods used, many inspired by the Jesuit Ratio Studiorum, are primary texts, training of the memory, recitation, phonics, grammar, parsing, diagramming, and honorable competition.
In this first of ten KZitem lectures, St. Ambrose Curriculum Committee Chairman Joan Carey addresses the special virtues of classical education in the grammar stage.
