He could've done a couple things to make it easier & faster for himself; the 1st thing he should've done was put the slips in. THEN close the valve & latch the tongs. Have the dope bucket and rig soap behind him so all he had to do is turn, grab, drop n lather, and toss the brush back in the bucket. He almost got blind sided by the pipe if he took any longer to dope the box. And for those of you that are wondering where the chain is, you don't need it if you got a working top-drive attached to the Blocks that at least does the spinning in for you. Otherwise, this Roughneck still got it down! Not bad at all

Very well coordinated for a one man floor crew taking the place of 2 men. Don't see any chain being thrown from the third man. Maybe the turn table goes fast enough to smack the pipes tight enough for one tensioning of the tongs finish it off. The other parts of the equation are the driller controlling the pipe going up and down as well as the turntable going around. He also tensions the tongs and is ultimately responsible for the safety of the crew. Is there a derrick hand on this particular rig?
@mattfrench8372
2 жыл бұрын
It ain't a "turntable". It's a rotary. It ain't tension being applied by the tongs. Its torque. Worst 8 f#*king words ever spoken on a drilling rig. "I'm an engineer, and I'm here to help".

Some Kelly drive rigs have a low torque spinner for making connections. Older ones are without the spinner hence the chain. Some rigs also have a spinner set up like the tongs pretty well so the floor hand uses the bastard. The Rotary table is what turns the actual drill string when ur back in business.
