Previous comments "The video is 14 minutes, you said the build is 2 minutes." I'm not trying to waste anyone's time, and force people to spend more time on KZitem than they need to. "A golf swing takes 1 second, but a golf lesson can take a hour." Why? Good teachers are willing to spend time to make sure their students really understood the material. Everyone is saying the tee shirts need to be 100% cotton. All mine and those I find at Dollar Tree are cotton/polyester. Can I use these tee shirts? What's wrong with using polyester? You're using actecte cause u have it on hand....but anything stiff that'll be okay with washing will work just fine then??
@GeorgeYangMDNYC

I think the paper towel insert will help make up any difference between the cotton vs cotton/poly t-shirts. You noticed the 100%, but I’m sure many people will not look as carefully at their t-shirt and just use the same cotton/poly as you have. According to the Masks4all.co website, the paper towel is important to the mask. Cut and paste from Description: Acetate Film 0.005 mil: 8.5”x11” or 9”x 12” (extra can be used to make face shields.) I looked some up and they are pretty expensive. They don't sell them in individual sheets, only packs of 20-100. So I don't want you guys to spend that, unless you plan to make face shields for donations or for your own business use when reopening up small businesses, such as the cashiers, or hairstylists/barbers. Workers who spend a lot of time within a couple of feet from customers. Alternatives to the Acetate frame (using 3D printing to make a frame was not a viable option to reach everyone.) •The goal is not to buy anything more than you need or want to. There must be some stiff, bendable material which you can find at home. Channel your inner MacGyver. •If you can find some transparency/acetate pages at work, use that. •If you have clear folders at home, use that. If you only have a folder which is made of card stock, use that. •Some people have laminating sleeves which would also work. •A 2 liter bottle in theory could be cut into a long rectangular piece and punch holes in that •Some junk mail actually uses pretty good plastic or laminated card material to make their advertisement stand out. You can use that and cut a strip to use. It will be hidden inside the mask anyway, so don't worry. Thank you Dr. Yang, for this excellent design. I use both the paper and the cloth masks. For the paper ones, I use paper towel outer with a tissue filter, all stapled together, so it is fully disposable. For the cloth ones, I use a cotton outer as a mechanical barrier and chiffon (or polyester) inner as an electrostatic barrier. Since there is no paper, the cloth mask can be hand washed and re-used several times, so I have stiched the ear bands, instead of using clips (per your earlier video). I have also hand stiched the bottom opening for a neater finish. And I use hot melt nose clips for a better seal (I wear glasses and they fog up!). These can be bought from ebay quite cheaply. Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to publish these videos!

Hi Dr. Yang. Thank you for taking the time and showing us how to make a quick and effective face mask. I followed your instructions to the Tee. My face mask did not look anything like yours. I have a couple of questions, if you will. Where did you get the piece of Acetate? I tried using clear notebook divider. I had to put 4 pieces on top of each other( I quadrupled the thickness) and it was still too soft to hold shape. Secondly, you are saying you are using tea shirt material for the mask. I know tea shirts are soft too. I used something like that, still can not have my mask hold its shape like the one in your video
@GeorgeYangMDNYC

1. Transparency Acetate from Staples or Michaels. The specific brand I used was from Dick Blick Art Store in NYC: www.dickblick.com/items/55506-1305/ I was using this acetate to make face shields. Video link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Zpj2Y53in6goJw You don’t have to use acetate, but the “frame” should be stiff like a piece of index card or folder material. If you bend it and let go, it should want to stay straight. The clear document sleeves where you can insert a sheet of 8.5x11 paper would be too flimsy like a ziplock bag. Important to place the sheet of paper towel in the middle of the t-shirt. The paper towel has some stiffness like a sheet of paper when it is new. Without the paper towel, it will likely needs too soft. Lastly, the T-shirt material recommended by Masks4all.co is 100% cotton. A cotton/polyester blend might be too thin. Good for working out, but too thin to be an effective mask.
@selickl

One final question if you would be so kind! I have read that the best fabric mask materials are tightly woven cotton (600 thread)or quilting material or electrostatic fabrics such as melt-blown polypropropyene. Is there some special reason that you prefer T-shirt material?
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
This is one of many videos. The focus is on accessibility and making one so they can use it today. If possible, the surgical masks that can be purchased will be better. This is the "lowest hanging fruit," which everyone should be able to make with what they have at home. If they have other better materials or the money and time to buy better materials, the same design can be used to make the same style mask. You can make this mask using the 600 thread cotton with a Filti mask filter, or other melt-blown polypropylene. These are made of non-woven polypropylene, with a melt-blown center layer. You can try to recreate a surgical mask using purchased materials. On Etsy, they even sell kits which you can assemble your own surgical masks. The T-shirt material is from the Masks4all.co website. Note they didn't use a cotton-poly blend as their recommended cloth. The 100% cotton t-shirt is thicker and is closer to other tightly woven cotton. However, the filtration of the cotton alone was not great, so adding the paper towel was important to the design. Here is the graph from the article discussed below: smartairfilters.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Effectiveness-of-DIY-Mask-Materials-at-Capturing-1.0-Micron-Particles.jpg Here is a channel post and discussion about the best mask materials which you may find interesting: kzitem.infoUgybnLPPH85A28YlaQt4AaABCQ?app=desktop

Thank you for this simple mask!! How many times can I use this mask b4 washing/reassembling? If I only wear out to a store, maybe 2 hours, can I re-use another day or more w/o taking apart, washing, reassembling?
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
Jill King The recommendation is to wash after each use. People will do what they think is safe, so use your best judgement. I will give some background explanations to think about when you decide what you want to do. __________ I have a feeling people are not washing their DIY masks after each use …. human nature. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Viruses cannot grow without infecting humans so waiting a certain amount of time may allow the virus to degrade and not be infectious. Bacteria and fungus can grow by themselves in moist environments. Example, kitchen sponges start to smell funny after a while. That would be the main reason to wash after using them. The human mouth has more germs than a dogs mouth. I guess it’s like wearing washed underwear after showering versus wearing unwashed underwear from a day or two ago still in the laundry basket. Also, don’t get too attached to that rectangle of cloth. After a certain number of hand washes if you start to notice any funky smell, just toss the cloth and cut out a fresh one. If you spent 30-45 minute sewing a mask, you are more likely to keep that mask like a favorite pair of jeans. I’m prioritizing hygiene over convenience. I tried to make it easy enough to take apart and reassemble so that everyone is more likely to do it.

Do I need to add holes to the plastic strip? What is the purpose of the holes?
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have immediate access to a hole puncher, you can try making the mask with a solid piece of acetate. This only covers about 1/3 of the surface area of the mask. You still have 2/3rds of the mask for air to go through from both above and below the strip of acetate. Adding the holes increases the amount of air, but the acetate still covers about 1/4th fo the mask. Will people be able to tell between 1/3 vs. 1/4? Probably not. In this paper towel version of the mask, I did not punch any holes in the printer paper, and it worked well, without much difficulty breathing. kzitem.info/news/bejne/r3l8naB5gX-ffH4 Give it a try. If you think you think it works well without the holes, please let me know. With the disposable paper towel mask, people worried that in theory that it would be hard to breathe without some holes, but in real-life usage, I did not feel there was any difficulty at all. In this cloth version, I included the hole punch idea, since the acetate is very strong versus a thin piece of printer paper. Also, once the holes are punched, you can use the same piece of acetate over and over again cleaning it between uses. Let me know if you try it without the holes and if you think it works fine without them. It will help people who don’t have immediate access to a hole punch to get started while they get a one time access to a hole puncher (at the office or borrow one from a neighbor.)

Well, could you stitch it first then use the paper towel? You can use the binders to hold the towel in afterwards. And as for masks that have the seam down the middle, I don't blame you for judging against them, but what about if you use a filter with them?

What is the purpose of the acetate piece?
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
It gives the mask structure and shape. This is important otherwise a flat piece of fabric across your face will get caught in your mouth as you talk and open your mouth. This restricts breathing and makes the mask wet right wear your mouth is. Normally to make a structured mask you will need to pattern to sew two curved pieces of fabric together to create a dome shape. If you don’t have a sewing machine, this folding and clip method gives structure without any need to sew. Also, easy to place the towel filter to cover entire surface of mask instead of trying to stuff the filter into a tiny pocket where the corners may not be laying flat.

The goal of masks4all is to try to get 80% or more of the population to wear a face mask when out in the public and especially indoor crowded locations with poor ventilation. My mask protects you and your mask protects me. Here is a Emoji post that I made with my iPhone in the community section of this channel: kzitem.infoUgwMmHudaU6tzclwbr94AaABCQ?app=desktop More recent information from this past weekend: Here is a recent study from Hong Kong in hamsters showing different scenarios of COVID-19 infection between sick and healthy hamsters. kzitem.infoUgzh08jIawrMWQA7iyx4AaABCQ?app=desktop Summary: No mask and free ventilation between the 2 cages of hamsters => 10 of 15 health hamsters were infected. A surgical mask was used to wrap one side of the sick hamsters cage, and 2 of 15 healthy hamsters were infected. When the sick hamsters were not covered with a mask, but the healthy cage was covered with a mask between the two cages, 4 of 15 got infected. Note in the study they used Surgical masks. The Masks4all.co website cites their literature regarding 3 layer cloth facemasks with a paper towel insert being close to a surgical mask. The Hong Kong Consumer Council had a study to ask whether it was better to wash a surgical mask or make a DIY face mask. They compared a 3 layer paper towel/facial tissue mask with face shield versus surgical mask and found it to be 80-90% of a surgical mask. www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3050689/how-make-your-own-mask-hong-kong-scientists If you can buy surgical masks it would still be the standard. But there are supply chain and shipping issues, and people may run out. So DIY masks may have some role between receiving the standard masks, assuming the shipments are not diverted by foreign or domestic governments for national use. I think we should be ready and be able to make a mask if we really need to. Ideally the government and businesses can ramp up production to meet the needs of the people without price gouging when people are financially in trouble.

Only the paper towel. The T-shirt can be hand washed several times. Cut a new rectangle when the edges start fraying, falling apart or if you notice any odor to the cloth. The acetate, binder clips and rubber bands can be wiped down with 70% rubbing alcohol and air dried, ready for the next assembly. Cut a new piece of paper towel 5.5" tall and 7" wide. If your select-a-size towel is 6" wide you can cut it to 5.5"x 6" wide and it would still work. The original version used a strip of printer paper, which would require you to make a new strip with holes punched into it, but that would be too much work over the long term. So the acetate can be used multiple times and disinfected.

Is paper towel not dangerous to our health?.. If we breath we may inhale some fibers.. Just asking.. But tnx Doc for sharing.. Keep safe.. 😊
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
Good question. There are certainly situations where we are more likely to inhale fibers. Emptying out a paper shredder bin, emptying a vacuum cleaner, sawdust after sanding wood, cutting grass, or pollen from walking in a field of flowers. In the case of emptying a shredded paper bin, the long cellulose fibers (tree fiber) in paper is cut up to tiny short fibers which may be inhaled. When we open a roll of paper towel or printer paper, we don’t see any fibers flying up into the air. If there was a dark table or counter top, you can see if any fibers fly off and land on the table. One test I thought of to see if fibers come off paper is the “clean your mirror test.” If you want to clean a window or mirror, paper towels, cloth, or Kleenex facial tissues will clean the mirror without any fiber residue. The worst thing to clean a mirror is a Charmin toilet paper. When you wipe a wet mirror it leaves some streaks, but also tiny fibers which dry up on the mirror. Later you get windex or just water and wipe the mirror with a paper towel which doesn’t leave any fiber residue or streaks. Surgical masks would be better since they are designed for this type of use, so they would still be considered the safest.

How can cloth mask, paper towels filter viruses? Are they supposed to be dust-free basically? How do they function differently from n95 masks ?I am really confused
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
In Dr. Fauci's own words (kzitem.info/news/bejne/pI6guJp4mmKhjHo). He is a fellow Cornell Medical School alumni. There are two reasons to wear a mask. To protect yourself, but also to protect others from you. Since we know the virus is "around" but many some people have the virus but do not show any symptoms. These asymptomatic people may unintentionally infect more high risk people by not wearing a mask. If protective N95 masks are being saved for Frontline healthcare workers, what is the work around to still try to solve the problem? It is impossible for everyone to get an unlimited supply of N95 masks, but simple cloth masks or surgical masks which are not protective are available, then how can we use these inferior protective masks to their best ability. Although they are not great at protecting the user, it is actually very effective at catching droplets leaving the user. So it is better at prevention. Okay, so how can we use that knowledge and create a plan for the public? Let's look at a scenario: If 1-5 people out of 100 have COVID-19. If we knew 100% which 5 people were sick, we could simply mask those sick people only. But if we didn't know which 5 people were "it" then another way to make sure those 5 people don't infect the other 95 people is to ask everyone to wear a mask. This way we know that those 5 people are not spreading droplets. The protection from the DIY masks are not as good as the prevention, but we are getting the most out of these DIY masks, despite the lack of N95 masks. Channel post May 17, 2020- First study which shows that masks reduce infections when used. kzitem.infoUgzh08jIawrMWQA7iyx4AaABCQ?app=desktop Recent COVID-19 hamster study (hamster model which can be infected with COVID-19 showed a reduction of infection from 10 of 15 healthy hamsters getting infected versus 2 hamsters fo 15 when the sick cage of hamsters had one side of the cage blocked with a surgical mask to reduce the droplets flying at the healthy hamsters. When they didn't mask the sick hamsters and only put a surgical face mask on the side of the cage of the healthy hamsters to reduce the droplets flying at them, the infection rate went down to 4 of 15 got infected. An interesting experiment they did not do, would have been placing a surgical mask as a wall on the side of the sick hamsters, and another surgical mask as a wall on the healthy hamsters cage. So we could see how a double wall might slow down the droplets. Note that the surgical masks were only blocking one side of the cage between the two cages. Air could easily float around the mask, but the experiment showed that the infection rates went down a lot, which means the number of droplets were significantly reduced. Another observation was that the masked groups did not get as sick as the hamsters which were fully exposed. There is evidence that the amount of virus that infects the person can determine how sick that they get. So if we greatly reduce the droplets leaving a sick person's mouth (even if they don't feel sick) this should reduce the amount of virus that escapes them. God forbid it gets passed a second mask, hopefully another large percentage of virus gets caught in the second mask, and any minor amount of virus will hopefully not lead to a severe infection. Channel post by Dr. Erin Bromage reviewing recent outbreaks to look for a pattern and see if we can avoid those situations. kzitem.infoUgyUFA-NDtxSfr3odax4AaABCQ?app=desktop What if everyone who got sick only had minor symptoms? Then we can relax that it isn't as deadly. What if no one wears any masks, and everyone is taking deep breaths of each others respiratory droplets which not blocked or reduced in number. Just a nice deep breath of multiple millions of respiratory droplets, each drop with hundreds if not thousands of virus. Or we can try to catch the lion's share of respiratory droplets on a simple cloth or paper towel, and never even let it get into the air. Any that do get passed the mask will be a small percentage. As far as the size of the virus versus the filtration ability of the masks: kzitem.infoUgybnLPPH85A28YlaQt4AaABCQ?app=desktop Good question. Viruses are tiny, but they are carried by respiratory droplets. It is easier to catch the larger respiratory droplets when the droplets are large and juicy, than to let them freely float in the air as an aerosol. As the water in the respiratory droplet evaporates, and continues to shrink, eventually it will become very small where the DIY cloth masks and surgical masks cannot filter out these microscopic particles. So does it make sense to catch the droplets when they are larger and juicier which is an easy task for an absorbent material such as cloth and paper towels to prevent the virus from escaping into the environment, and shrinking to a point where it is hard to catch. Analogy: Yellow dandelions vs, mature dandelions. If you were pulling weeds in your yard, would it be easier to pluck all of the yellow dandelions before they mature and start releasing the tiny floating seeds? If your yard only had 15 yellow dandelions, and you didn't want the entire yard to be seeded with dandelions, it would make sense to quickly pluck those 15 before the yellow flower changes into the floating seeds. To prevent the floating dandelions seeds from landing and growing, you would need to cover your entire lawn with plastic to prevent those seeds from landing. Protecting the entire lawn from getting infected with dandelions seeds would be like an N95 mask. It would be a lot more work to try to protect the lawn, than it is to prevent the lawn from getting infected So, when we see the yellow dandelions, all of the seeds are clumped together and not ready to float away. We can grab those 15 dandelions early at the source versus letting them release into the air and later try to prevent them from landing. Hope that analogy makes sense. The main reason for DIY facemasks or surgical facemasks which are not protective either due to the large air leaks on the sides of the mask which allows unfiltered air to be breathed in. My mask protects you and your mask protects me. Realistically, no country has universal N95 mask usage for their population. Yet countries that have universal surgical mask use are doing amazingly well. For example the country of Taiwan has 7 deaths for the entire pandemic without closing their economy. Hong Kong is a city of 7 million people compared to New York City with 9 million. Hong Kong had 4 deaths and 1088 cases as of today (check here for updates: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china-hong-kong-sar/ ). With their protests, I suspect it will go up.

Yes, take the mask apart. Discard the paper towel filter insert. Hand wash the mask with soap/water as part of your hand hygiene. Hang dry. Wipe down the acetate frame, rubber bands and binder clips with alcohol and let them air dry. Use a new piece of paper towel to assemble a new one. With practice and no talking like I did in the video, you can make it in less than 1 minute. If the fabric has any odor at all after several washes. Just throw it out and cut a new rectangle. I can make 8-12 rectangles out of the large t-shirt. Other options are bed sheets/pillow cases with a tight thread count. kzitem.infoUgybnLPPH85A28YlaQt4AaABCQ?app=desktop Ecofriendly, with less paper towel waste than the full paper towel mask.

What is the original source/inspiration for the #OmegaFold design?____ & the name?____
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
4 жыл бұрын
I first mention it and show the design on March 28 as part of my Face Shields video for healthcare providers. The link is to the time stamp where I first show it. Later I use the name. kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Zpj2Y53in6goJw I used the cold pack cover that we use in my office to make a rudimentary fluid resistant cover for an N95 mask. The cold pack cover just happened to be 7" wide like a surgical mask, but only 4.5" wide, which is already very narrow. I had to keep the middle section small to keep the mask wide enough to cover an N95 mask. Later that night, I made another video to show my sister in California, since they did not have any face masks either. This was originally an unlisted video for friends and family to show them how to make their own masks since there were backorders and purchasing delays, which may take weeks if not months. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zo6XtmGMboSqepg The #Omegafoldfacemask was as a means to get some feedback and photos on Instagram so I could see that they were actually able to make the mask and wear them. If the masks don't look correct, I could give them tips to make it correctly. Hopefully the videos are clear enough that everyone is making them to specifications. If you give a person a fish, they eat for a day. If you teach a person to fish, they can eat for a lifetime. I can teach a businessman how to fish and they can go out a haul in all of the fish, then sell it to the people, but I would rather teach each person to fish so they are all self sufficient.
