Deer IQ test. I think you should revamp that test to hunting scenarios. Whether or not a moose is in the deer family is irrelevant, Boone and crocket scoring is irrelevant, and naming antler parts is irrelevant. Those questions are really for trophy hunters. Some people are meat hunters, my state allows 45 does. Maybe have questions about thermals, dry conditions Vs wet conditions, best probable bedding areas, etc.

What are your thoughts on the method of using smoke, as a cover scent? I've never used it. Well, on purpose. Lol. But it seems to be gaining traction out there. I do remember when I was a young buck, first or second year hunting. When I got cold, I started a fire. I had several doe's pass by me. Within 20 yards or so. That happened several times. Blew my mind as a young hunter. Anyways, any thoughts?

Old mature deer are different than young deer, and pressured different than non-pressured. So it depends on your situation. I'd say in general the more pressured the less you can get away with. I personally like to have zero scent and work toward that if at all possible.

Pharmaceutical gum spirits of turpentine. Is a much better (cheap) cover scent if you have pine trees where you hunt. I put 1 drop on each shoulder, and 1 drop on the "button" on top of my hat Your best bet is to stay down wind of your target

@@stevebono9058 no doubt, we all, or we all should try to stay downwind. I'm sure some don't think much about that. But it never hurts to have another ace up your sleeve, so to speak. Good harvest to you 😏

@matthewwichtner2935 thanks! I do really good...... (once every several years) I pass on young bucks, and fortunately most that hunt in my area do the same. Helps tremendously. But don't get it twisted, deer in areas like that are not stupid they get a few more years to become wise.

Depends if the deer usually smell campfires or not. I raised my boys hunting in the national forest where the ridges overlooked several well used camp fire sites. Extensively used by hikers, boy scouts, etc. We often had the place to ourselves during hunting, and of course had campfires. The boys were often within yards of deer with their muzzleloaders. They all got their first deer (bucks only) with campfire smoke as their cover scent.

It is like a mma fight...you train your ass off and do all the hard prep...then the actual fight time is short and easy! Like he said these bucks are killed by the prep u put in during the summer!

What you say makes sense, but ive been hunting 50 seasons and all i can say is if your lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time youll have success, but luck has alot to do with it. That buck you got in your back yard may just as well taken a different path that day and you may not have seen him. So i still believe that science is critical to help but luck still is important.

Thanks for your input! It’s an odd’s game, you just have to stack the odds, the best you can in your favor and more often it will work out good for you. The first sit phenomenon is one I strongly believe in and try to use to my advantage as much as possible.

I disagree, u can’t kill them on the couch. Don’t hunt the same place’s every time you hunt. Move around, most deer are killed on your 1st or 2nd sit. Also camera only get pics at a certain distance who’s to say these bucks aren’t taking a different trail as they do so many times. I’ve noticed a faint trail on a ridge side 50 to 60 yards away from the major trails.

The idea is pounding a spot is counterproductive. Gather intel, then strike at the right moment. Yea sometimes you just need to be in the woods, but it should be strategic and putting the odds in your favor

You can in fact kill more deer from your couch. Don't educate deer if the conditions are not right. And especially if the wind is not in your favor. Sit there on your couch until YOU have conditions right

I don't dude. I hunt my ass off. And when I was young we didn't have many clothes. Grew up poor. You probably didn't. Hence why I got cold. I've been hunting for well over 30 years son. I forgotten more memories than you probably remember. I gather most of my information by scouting and real time situations. I never mentioned trail cam, not sure how you're brain works. Obviously your parents never informed you how to respect others. Or you just flat out ignored that.
