A great game to play
Damn if I love to play this game. Reviewing some of my gameplays it's not very clear, but this is a fantastic “pad in hand” game. The strength is precisely its playability and its gameplay, even on max difficulty it’s a beautiful and fun game in your hands. I’m going to divide my review in some points this time, each with pro and con.
Combat system
Rich, and full of variables, with cool active skills and special shots, which I rarely used and above all to finish the fight in a spectacular way. When you learn the 4 sword forms you have fun mixing them together against many enemy patterns and combinations. Everything merged with an excellent and very readable system of perries and perfect dodges. I particularly appreciated the Kurosawa style standoff mechanics, furthermore, the various duels that take place throughout the campaign are an appreciated break in the gameplay. Honorable mention to the short bow, while the long one breaks through helmets, the short one fails, but hitting the openings still results as a headshot, so satisfying.
Skill tree is very flexible and ninja trinkets make the combat spectrum wider.
Very classic stealth component flat at the beginning, later, with more skill it becomes engaging. Personally, I approached stealth both as a skimming of enemies before going melee, and as a small personal challenge to be able to do everything in silence.
Some move patterns can be overused, becoming repetitive, while complete combos are sometimes difficult to complete, except against a couple of enemies.
Technical sector
KZitem recompression does not faithfully reproduce many aspects, to export properly you should need 70GB for 30 minutes of gameplay and I don’t want to do it, there are some KZitem colleagues of mine who already have uploaded examples.
The game is very cinematic, and the developers did their best to reduce the HUD to a minimum. Suker punch is good at working with atmospheric colors, the palette is wide and well balanced. Small graphic details get lost, but the overall look is impactful, especially on the remastered for PS5. Stable framerate even in the middle of a fire or with many enemies on screen. Loading times are ridiculously short with very few bugs.
Every game with horses has problems, this one too, but they tried to block it, limited it to avoid too many problems with player creativity (the automatic jump) and every now and then it suffers from the pac-man effect.
Honorable mention to the Wind as an indicator of movement: simple but brilliant idea, it cleans up the screen from most of the HUD and it’s nice to see as it moves particles on the screen making the game more spectacular.
There is a recycling of some gaming assets like houses, but in the long run it doesn't bother. Some areas are flat, less inspired, a little more barren with bad lighting, but they are a little number compared to the total. Facial expressions are a sore point as in any other action or RPG, but since this is not the game focus who cares. Animals that are a little sloppy and awkward up close, cute from afar. Bird that guides you to points of interest can bug themselves in walls. Enemy AI not brilliant and can often be broken.
Story and setting
Beautiful environments, with different biomes with some unique areas. In terms of lighting and detail, these unique areas are very well looked after. In my opinion the beautiful lighting rewards especially the fog. The open world guarantees a high level of free roaming given by the map, which it’s large but not spread out, with dense points of interest and with the possibility of encountering random events.
Linear and basic storyline, whose simplicity greatly helps the open world gameplay as not to complicate things too much. The possibility of choosing the order of the missions, it can fragment the story, no longer contextualizing the plot.
Personal note
Going back to the storyline, the most interesting idea lies in the Samurai, who has to use every possible way in order to save his people, even if that means going against everything he's been taught about the honor of being a Samurai. While I was playing I tried to do the same, I tried to see if I could win some battles by preserving my honor, but in the end, many times I had to act smart in order to achieve victory.
