On December 13, 1943, I, 2nd Lt Philip R. Adair, led a flight of four P-40s on a patrol mission over the "Hump Route". After an uneventful three hours, we returned to Nagaghuli Airfield, where I immediately began servicing my plane, "Lulubelle". Suddenly, a red alert warning sounded, and I scrambled to take off without debriefing or safety checks. I rendezvoused with my flight at 20,000 feet, but they hadn't taken off yet.
I spotted a large formation of unknown aircraft, which Control denied, insisting they were 40 miles east. I pursued the formation, identifying 24 bombers and 40 fighters, and informed Control of the correct location and threat. Despite their skepticism, I trailed the formation, determined to hinder the attack on our base complex, including the Air Depot Group HQ, 80th Ftr Group HQ, and 10th Air Force HQ.
