A lesson on the unshakable covenant promises of God, who is worthy of our highest allegiance, love, and trust, regardless of our circumstances. As we continue in our study of 1st Samuel today, we see the continual unraveling of both Saul’s persecution of God’s anointed king, but more importantly, God’s sovereign control over the situation. Saul wanted David dead, but Jonathan promised to investigate and confirm his father’s intentions to David. By way of a code phrase, Jonathan informed David of the threat to his life, keeping the promise he made. What’s more, Jonathan assures him that he will live, because God is providentially with him, and is faithful to keep His covenant promises. This should be our sure hope as well. If God has our highest allegiance, love, and trust, we can suffer even incredible hardships with joy and peace. Not because of a change of circumstances, but because we know that God’s good and righteous plans and purposes cannot be thwarted. In Christ, God is for us, and with us; therefore, no matter what befalls us, He is working it all out for our good and His glory.
