David clashed with Goliath because he was a Philistine and a nephilim (an absolute enemy of God) ... Saul was the king, he was David's father-in-law, and he was also still God's anointed (on a certain level) ... so, even though Saul was an enemy, David knew that he had to leave him to God ... let God Himself deal with him ... ... and, yes, David lied but that was totally permissible under those circumstances, much like how the Egyptian midwives lied to save the Hebrew babies from the genocidal intentions of the dark side ... David was shrewd but he wasn't cunning (except with Bathsheba and Uriah, which was a rare lapse - and grave error - on his part) ... even though he lied, in the eyes of God, he had not sinned ...
