This is my One Second a Day project for 2021. Sometimes you post videos for personal reasons, never really expecting others will engage. This is one of those videos. I decided one year ago that 2021 would be something worth documenting, not realizing we would end the year 5,000 miles away from where we started. The last year has represented significant change for my wife and me, with a move to Norway in the middle of a pandemic. Additionally, it took about three months before I found my rhythm, learning how to identify and document what was interesting each day. The camera work gets better, the angles more interesting and story finds its voice. But I also discovered the process is difficult because you work in a vacuum for a year. So, feel free to let me know what you think works, what you would change and if you are simply bored by it all. And let me know if you made it all the way to the end.
Personally, I find most videos in this genre rather lame. When a viewer doesn’t know the people or context the stream of images make little to no sense. I attempted to create something that tells the story of change, of challenges, and of rebirth in a new culture. Rather lofty goals that were, in hindsight, impossible to achieve. I did my best to give context as time passes, highlight the big events, weave reoccurring themes throughout, and always let you know where we are in the year so you can maintain your bearings. All in all, I think the construct of One Second a Day is broken for creating a solid and coherent narrative, but it makes for interesting home movies.
