Bobby is the BEST! Buy his “Elite Swing” book. It will change your hitting life. He took my son from a max exit velo of 85 and a distance of about 4 feet (before it hit the ground) to max exit velo of 104 and 420 before it hit the ground! But my son also put in the time. There are no easy answers in this sport, just consistent effort guided by well-informed coaching!

great video...great explanation....(as a youth)I'm 65 NOW" we were taught to hit or swing level.....I have NO problem hitting NICE HARD ground balls through the gaps for singles ALTHOUGH a nice slight angle upwards is a "beauty shot" right over the shortstop's head.....

I get good results trying to get guys to pin point below the equator of the ball just a bit, concept of hitting a pool ball. Be comfortable with level /down swing plane, mostly level.

Great video. I've noticed youths swinging under the ball in games to the point it's frustrating. I'm gonna try this to hopefully help improve this tendency.

Bobby dives way deeper into this stuff in his E-Book. Definitely a great investment for understanding elite swing patterns and body movements that we see the best hitters in the MLB do.

I have seen drills were instructors stand on a bucket to change angle of pitch opposed to sitting.any thoughts or explanations. Thanks

@@YouGoPro sounds good.im curious. I believe the instructor was trying to simulate a downward angle from pitcher to adjust angle

@@joefoley6476 well if that’s the case I think regular bp would be doing that. On a bucket probably creates a huge angle. I’ll have to ask Bobby what an average MLB breaking ball angle is.

It’s interesting that you wouldn’t proscribe an upward launch angle for everyone. Even if your a smaller player, the ball is coming in at 80+ mph. With a decent bat, a good swing and proper launch angle the exit velo is going to be high enough to get the balls in the gaps or out of the yard. Swing angle should be more about getting bat in plane with the pitch to provide the longest possible contact window. That way, direct hits are line drives and slight misses are hard ground balls and fly balls that have the opportunity to leave the yard.

All this talk goes awry if the ball is not middle, middle. If the pitch is down your swing is no longer parallel to the ground.... Your hands are not always (actually rarely) at pitch height. And the degree of launch angle is useless (pos or neg) if exit speed is low. A 0 degree ball hit at 90 mph is way better than a +25 degree ball at 75 mph. But then again, I don’t have a fancy indoor facility with Hitraxx and a program to pay for or any MLB experience to fall back on. Just 40 years of studying, playing, and coaching baseball.

You’re thinking of launch angle as the angle the ball comes out in relation to the bat. It’s just the angle the ball is hit in reference to the ground. So high/low pitch doesn’t matter. If the bat was completely perpendicular to the ground you would still measure launch angle in reference to the ground, not the bat’s angle. I agree that exit speed plays a role. However all Bobby did was explain launch angle in this video. He wasn’t telling kids with low exit velo to try to be like the pros. In fact the main point of this video in my opinion was a super simple and effective drill that can identify hitter’s swing flaws to help them become better hitters. And he gave you this info for free. If I were you I’d add this drill to your 40 years of coaching knowledge and move on with a “thank you” to Bobby for being kind enough to share it with us. 😉
