How do you review characters when you don't know who/what they are until players create them?
@indiarudder1920

When you start, you have the players introduce their character and briefly explain their backgrounds before starting the campaign.

Man something about this concept just really clicks with me. I'm having a really big "Aha!" type of epiphany where I feel like I can really flesh out some adventures in my world without getting lost and overwhelmed by my own notes and prep.

I just ran D&D for the first time in over a year. I forgot to bring my DM bag with the adventure book, notebook, and everything else. All I had was the eight steps on my phone, and it was one of the easiest sessions of D&D I've ever ran. I felt just prepared enough to improv my way through three hours. Thanks, Mike!

Just bought this book as a Christmas present from me to me and bought another copy for a DM friend of mine. I have been DM’ing for little over a year and I have to say this book is a fantastic resource. Highly recommend it! The official DM’s guide is ok, something I dip into from time to time. It’s like a long text book. The lazy DM’s guide is what yo refer to to get good grades! Its my go to reference source for game prep. It gets an A+ from me. Well done.

Started D&D for the first time and DM'ing for my 10 y/o daughter. Your content's been super helpful, I've been trying to make sure she's having fun, between this and your overview of Dragon of IceSpire Peak, it's been a great way to keep us all engaged. Thanks so much!

I purchased this and the lazy DM's workbook. I've been playing and DMing since I was a kid back in the days of the basic rules. And have to say you have some really solid guidance here for gamers old or new. Nice job.

Sold! Just bought the print & PDF. I run a mix of homebrew and published stuff, and since I'm planning on doing a sandbox for my upcoming campaign, this seems like it will be really helpful. I've also been reading your series on Ghosts of Saltmarsh.

Just bought your book on Audible and loved it! It was very helpful for a first time DM like myself. I just wanted to THANK YOU for offering an audiobook. For busy, auditory learners like myself, and for the visually impaired, audiobooks are wonderful resources. Thank you and keep up the great content!

I'm sure you hear from this type of thing all the the time... But let me just say it again. I've been GMing for years, been complimented, have always had a great time running games, have learned numerous games that I really love running (though mainly 5E, Savage Worlds, Pathfinder/Starfinder), devoured the GM guides for all of them... But this is probably the single most valuable video on GMing I've ever encountered. Thank you and well done. I look forward to reading the book.

Great video! I'm glad I explored your backlog of videos. These videos explaining how to use the book (RotLDM) look very helpful. One thing you brought up that I wasn't doing has to do with Fantastic Locations is the summaries. Having a short "name" for the location and three details is brilliant! It's easy to do, and describes just enough for the players to get to know a little about the location they're in. I'll try doing this for my next prep!

In much the same way that Aristotle systematized logic, you have systematized the prep steps I have been doing for years, but was hit and miss about because I lacked a checklist. I will definitely be promoting on my channel (for whatever that's worth at 114 subs).

8:42 Maybe it is because I haven't actually read the MM but I feel like the 5E MM doesn't have the same things that the 2E MM had as far as lore, ecology, etc. I REALLY miss that stuff, but I also REALLY like reading lore of things!

Its a one-time thing. You need some prep, and the games need some encounters. Once you've done it once and gotten the gist then you won't need to do it again, but your games will be richer for the work.
