One year ago, we sold everything and quit our jobs in the US to travel the world as a family of four. Our journey has included both amazing and challenging experiences, and in this video, we share our best moments and provide insights into the cost of full-time travel for our family.
Mexico
We began our adventure in Mexico, spending nine weeks there. We started in Valladolid, a slightly touristy city, where we stayed for a month. The place we chose was small, but we enjoyed visiting a nearby cenote. Next, we moved to Puerto Morelos, a small beach town between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. We connected with another travel family, enjoyed beach time, and took day trips, including a stay at the Hilton in Cancun. Our final week in Mexico was spent in Mexico City, where we explored the city's vibrant culture and sampled unique local foods like scorpions and bugs. Our total cost for Mexico was $5,969.87, averaging $91.84/day.
Europe
We then flew to Madrid, Spain, leveraging rewards miles to keep our flight costs to $524. Unfortunately, our time in Spain was marred by illness, and combined with jet lag and poor weather, we only managed to explore for a couple of days. Our expenses in Spain totaled $868.21, averaging $96.47/day.
Next, we stayed with family in Germany and Poland, which significantly reduced our accommodation costs. In Poland, we enjoyed exploring Gdansk, spending a total of $1,042.71 over two weeks, averaging $74.48/day.
Our journey continued to Georgia, where we spent six weeks between Kutaisi and Tbilisi. Despite an Airbnb mishap in Tbilisi, we loved our time in Georgia, spending $4,296.91 over 37 days, with daily averages of $110.75 in Kutaisi and $132.89 in Tbilisi.
Southeast Asia
We then moved on to Bali, Indonesia, where we spent two magical months. We stayed in Ubud and Nusa Dua, thoroughly enjoying the lower cost of living and the unique experiences, like kite flying. Our total expenses in Bali were $4,735.48, averaging $87.69/day.
In Vietnam, we stayed in Hanoi for a month, but in hindsight, we realized we would have preferred exploring other cities as well. Our total spend in Vietnam was $133.65/day.
Following Vietnam, we spent two months in Thailand, splitting our time between Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Highlights included visiting an elephant sanctuary and participating in local festivals. Our total spend was $190.33/day, with a few splurges along the way.
We arrived in the Philippines for the holidays, hoping to celebrate Christmas in a country that shares this tradition. Unfortunately, illness struck again, limiting our activities. Despite this, we enjoyed moments like a rickshaw tour around Intramuros. Our expenses in the Philippines averaged $127.52/day.
In Malaysia, we arrived just in time for Chinese New Year, which added a special atmosphere to our visit. We celebrated my birthday in the World's Largest Hotel at Genting Highlands. Our total spend in Malaysia was $4,011.64, averaging $138.33/day.
India
We spent the most time in India, with three months divided between Kochi, Bangalore, Goa, and Mumbai. One of our most memorable experiences was a three-day houseboat stay.
Overall Costs and Future Plans
Over the year, we spent an average of $118.40 per day, totaling under $45k. This was less than what we used to spend on rent and daycare back in the US. We maintained a budget but allowed for occasional splurges on nice places and outings.
Currently, we are in Turkey. We will continue our adventures and invite you to join us as we explore the world.
