Big thumbs up for Natalie Merchant from me. "Don't Talk", "Like the Weather", "What's the Matter Here" -- with 10,000 Maniacs, and "Carnival", "Wonder", and "Jealousy", on her own, and more recently "Which Side Are You On?" from 2003.

You're right about her voice but she never really does cut loose beyond a phrase or two. What stands out is her writing and the topics she tackles. She has songs about adult illiteracy, living with an alcoholic, living next door to someone hitting their kids, chronic depression, a young man taking the love letters of his father to his mother to the Vietnam Memorial Wall to leave them by his name.

Merchant is so relaxed and in control that you can’t take your eyes off of her. “Because the night” a cover of a Patty Smyth song is exquisite from this same concert from Natalie and 10,000 maniacs. You will not be disappointed.

First of all, that you haven't read Keroac, specifically On the Road, has me, as an English professor, shocked. Along with William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, Keroac is required reading. And thanks for doing this reaction. I haven't heard the Maniacs in years. Maniacs required listening: In My Tribe (Hey Jack K found here), Blind Man's Zoo, and Our Time in Edan. Natalie Merchant is wonderful. She has solo work too. And finally, you also need to check out REM. Similar sound and time.

You need to do another 10,000 Maniacs song. But from an album this time, not live. Try ‘Like the Weather’ which has a music video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1ZttyJaNe4qmpqA or perhaps Don’t Talk: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qIBtm3qVhpZ7jJg Just please do something else. Natalie has almost no reaction videos on KZitem, and she is amazing singer/artist, both with 10,000 Maniacs as well as solo.

Natalie Merchant went on as a solo artist in 1993, and had the hit album Tigerlily in 1995, and Ophelia in 1998. Her most well known songs from radio are: ‘Wonder’, ‘Carnival’, and ‘Kind and Generous’

She doesn't usually explode, beyond a couple of phrases (as mentioned below). But she does have a beautiful / unique sounding voice. You might check out these two: "Verdi Cries" (kzitem.info/news/bejne/xrBvupeGhqtiq3Y) and "Jealousy" (kzitem.info/news/bejne/kYagsp94cHSdo3Y).

Please do a few more from 10,000 Maniacs! But studio versions please. Eat For Two, Trouble Me, Like the Weather, What’s the Matter Here?, Don’t Talk; All of these have music videos. Would be cool see you react to the music videos.

You are going to love 10,000 Maniacs. I would start with earlier songs like 'Like the Weather' or 'What's the Matter Here?'. If you want to jump right in, try 'Candy Everybody Wants' or 'These Are Days'. Save their cover of Patty Smith's 'Because the Night' for later. Happy listening.

So happy you reacted to this song. And this was the version I was hoping for. I know you like live versions and I always like how you go into the instruments. As others have said Natalie Merchant is the lead singer here. She went solo. One thing when listening to Natalie Merchant is her lyrics. This song is about the Beat Generation a literary movement in the 50's. The founders are Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. I believe in one of Bob dillions videos Allen Gingsberg was in it.

In my opinion 10, Maniacs was an early alternative band. Natalie Merchant, is a unique singer, song writer. She flies under the radar. Her most famous album is Tiger Lilly. She has so much more songs than Tiger Lilly Album.

Such a shame that Natalie Merchant split from 10,000 Maniacs. Her songwriting and unique vocals -- with or without the band -- are always stellar. But I must admit the musicians from her solo work lack the delicious panache of her 10,000 Maniacs bandmates. I still adore her solo songs, but they do seem instrumentally tamer.

I completely agree. I first heard of 10,000 Maniacs as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live. Loved Natalie's unique voice ever since. Hits though really should come first and I agree with the commenter above that often live performances are just not as good as studio and the visuals usually distract. That being said this video (Jack Kerouac) which I've never heard is typical of Natalie's amazing voice!

I agree someone gave him "Heartbreaker" Live with Pat Benatar and Tina Mcbride. It's a fun version but if you don't know either of them, you would think it's a Mcbride song! I saw one reactor do studio version followed immediately by the live one. I thought that was a great way to do it. He did a few from Springsteen. Maybe the only exception I would make is to ALWAYS do SRV and Double Trouble live! P. S nice last name! (Ward)

Chod, you have a major void in your education. Free was a band, formed in the late 60's, fronted by Paul Rodgers, with Paul Kossof on lead. You need to check them out. They were a major influence on rock bands forever. 'Wishing Well' should be your starting point, others will instruct you from there.
