This brings back loads of memories. I grew up in Dunkirk, NY and went to collage at Fredonia State. We would go and watch 10000 Maniacs for 50 to 75 cents at BJ's Down Wind Café in Fredonia, NY. It's a very small place. The news would be on the TV's up behind the bar (no sound) and Natalie would make up lyrics, on the spot, to whatever she saw on the TV. What a wonderful time.

@@HOW365Clearly a personal opinion. I just wanted to say that I share your view. I love her but her days in the Maniacs were amazing and I miss that. Thank goodness for KZitem. RIP Rob Buck who contributes to their unique sound.

@@HOW365I know what you mean, but she left the band 31 years ago. These recordings and their early albums (like most bands) were the music of young musicians with a lot of energy and things to say. With changing times and influences, their music was bound to change as they aged; even if they had kept the same line up and all got on well through the 1990s and early 2000s.

Apparently Elektra didn't like the John Lombardo-Penned songs, which probably contributed to his departure from the band. He would try these songs in his next band The Billups before finally using them with Mary Ramsey. A lot of these songs had a lot of potential as we will hear in the John & Mary albums, most notably Angels Of Stone.

@@evanhughes1510 Assuming these are indeed demos, it's not uncommon for singers to "scat" sing (gibberish lyrics) as placeholders until they write actual words for the song. If memory serves, "Land of 1,000 Dances" was one. Na, Na, Hey, Hey Kiss Him Goodbye is absolutely another. They liked the scat so much, they kept it. Poison's "Unskinny Bop" is another. The words "unskinny bop" mean nothing and were supposed to be placeholders that fit the rhythm of the song until actual lyrics could be written, but someone liked the scat, so it stayed (and clearly got Poison a few pennies!)

Damn. D Ballad at 23:20 --- one can literally hear all of the testosterone being sucked out of the band. I'm telling ya, Merchant, Lombardo, and Buck made brilliant music, together. After that you get Merchant with accompaniment of piano and a monotonous wood block and mallet. So so so sad.

@@NickHarmanYou could not possibly be more wrong or show your ignorance of the person that Natalie is. Designer haircuts? I don't think so. Have you even read anything that she has said about why she wanted to creatively strike out on her own and be her own boss, not just the girl and a boy band

I have followed her since I saw the maniacs in a small club in London their first uk date when she burst into tears after the first song and sat by the wall because the audience was about ten people. I was sorry to see her make the mtv move and go from thrift shop to couture and as I say fancy haircuts. I think she had quite an ego and simply wanted more and saw the opportunity to dump the band and be a star. So don’t call me ignorant
