You have influenced our game purchases more than anyone in the hobby, and I was inspired to revisit my top 10 through ranking again. These all move around, but they are my go-to favorites: 10 - Arboretum 9 - Calico 8 - World's Fair 1893 (this one became a top ten for husband and I immediately upon playing - wow, is this game good!) 7 - Unfair / Funfair (weekend versus weeknight play) 6 - Ganz Schon Clever 5 - Castles of Burgundy 4 - Watergate (another instant top 10 when we first played - I am guessing you haven't played it, because I feel like you would love it!) 3 - Village Green 2 - Orleans 1 - Rajas of the Ganges Just missing my top ten: Trek 12, Santa Monica, Old West Empresario, Clank, 7 Wonders Duel (I play this only on BGA and it's FAR AND AWAY my most played game there), Clank, Obsession, Pioneer Days, Welcome To

Having now seen all of your top 100 games, I am genuinely surprised that neither of you have put Terra Mystica or Gaia Project in that list. They are quite heavy games, but so are many of the games you have both put in your top 20. Given how similar to Clans of Caledonia they both are (though, in my opinion, more enjoyable than Clans), and how highly you both rated Clans of Caledonia, it only makes me more surprised to not see either of the games make it anyway into your top 100. Is it simply that neither of you have played either of them? Or do you just not enjoy those games?
@TheBrothersMurph
Жыл бұрын
We actually have not played either of those games to this point! So that is why because I imagine they would show up somewhere or other. We actually have a plan to play both of them this year along with the new Terranova and then do a big video comparison and talking about our experience going through all those games
@SarahCharles92
Жыл бұрын
@@TheBrothersMurph if you're waiting to play them for a comparison, yet another game of that ilk is coming out this year called Age of Innovation. It is considered a sort of sequel to Terra Mystica. For a heads up: Terra Mystica is the original and is the most resource-tight of the 3 games already released. Terra Nova is a simplified version of Terra Mystica. It makes it go from a Heavy game to a Medium-Heavy game. Both Terra Mystica and Terra Nova have pre-set game maps, such that every game has the same map layout, but there are still a vast number of set-up differences and vastly asymmetrical abilities that can make each game feel very different. Gaia Project is a little less resource-tight, but has some very similar mechanics to Terra Mystica. The main differences are that GP has varied technology types that you can improve your engine with (instead of just going up one of 4 otherwise-equivalent coloured cult tracks in TM), and has a variable map set-up. I thoroughly enjoy both GP and TM. I find TN is likely good as an intro game for new players to the slightly heavier board games, but if you like Clans of Caledonia you may find Nova a bit too stripped back compared to the original Mystica.

Some of my favorite games and some that I still need to try. Ecos is super underrated. "Bingo mechanic" makes it sound like there's a lot of luck, but there really isn't because you always get something. My top recommendations for you are Aquatica and Barrage. Aquatica has hand management like Faiyum and everyone I've played with really enjoyed. Barrage is a very heavy thematic worker placement.

I need to play Ginkgopolis! Especially with how much I loved Carnegie. MY TOP TEN: 10. The King's Dilemma - My game group ended this legacy game with a tie. A TIE. And it felt incredible. The bidding mechanism of this game is so good. The secret objectives are incredible. I love it. 9. Cthulhu Death May Die - This is an incredible plug-and-play game. The simple actions (a few overall and then two special ones per scenario) make it very easy to get it to the table. There is so little rules overhead. 8. Imperial Settlers Empires of the North - This game, like Unmatched, is most fun when you're exploring new content, but this is also just a solid game. 7. Coffee Traders - I wish I could play this game more often, but it really does play best at higher player counts because of the interaction. This game reframed how I felt about most big games because there is so much interaction. I love it. AND THE THEME. 6. Twilight Struggle - I play this game in-person and routinely get my butt whooped, but it is so much fun. 5. Star Wars Rebellion - I like this game more than Twilight Struggle because of the "Rise of the Empire" variable setup that makes the game a MUCH different experience. It's such a different and even more fascinating game. 4. The Crew - I grew up playing trick taking games so discovering this was intoxicating. I still remember a friend reacting to my card play with "Why would you play that? You wouldn't play that. Unless you have .... " and then he watched me as he played his card and then we won the round. It was a perfect gaming moment. 3. Memoir '44 - I have now played all of the scenarios in the base game and am starting in on all of the expansion content and I love it. I love this game. 2. Ankh Gods of Egypt - This game and the various gods offer up such different ways of playing and winning. The rules are so simple. The merge mechanic solved the bunching problem of so many other area control games. I love it. 1. Marvel United - Plug and play perfected. And yeah, I love the theme. I could go on forever so I'll stop.

Yay, we're done the list! I'm actually sad to see it over with! 😢 But congratulations on reaching your fundraising goal! But here I go with my top 10 want-to-replay games! A few more words per game this time because it's the Top 10, after all. 10. GAIA PROJECT (NEW). Played this at SHUX with some friends. I didn't completely understand what I was doing, but that doesn't matter because I had a delightful time! Would love to replay so I can actually understand more of it! 9. ARK NOVA (NEW). I'm suprised this is so high, but I've been appreciating this game more and more the more I play it. It's got a lot of moving parts but it's still very tight, and despite me not thinking the Rajas Of The Ganges scoring mechanism really works very well here, I don't care about winning because the gameplay is so juicy. 8. CRYSTAL PALACE (NEW). I saw a playthrough of this and bought it immediately. I adore this game, despite how I don't usually prefer economic games, auction games, or games with lots of player interaction. It's just so interesting! I'm not even sure it's balanced, and I rarely win, but I love it anyway. 7. DOMINION (+3). I'd played board and card games throughout my childhood. We have a first-English-edition Settlers of Catan, Master Labyrinth, Quarto, and so on, which I still play and enjoy today. But Dominion blew me out of the water and turned board games into my only hobby. On an intellectual level, I found it irresistible how every game the setup was different, through a near-infinite number of combinations (I have fewer than half the expansions and my set alone has 37 quintillion possible setups, not including landscape cards like Events). Admittedly I don't want to play it every day, nor at every player count, but it holds such a fond place in my heart. 6. GENTES (+0). I think this game is so high because I played it once a year ago and loved it, but have had no chances to try it again! I'm sure once I play it again it will cool a bit, but I thought the action mechanism in this game is super unique so I'm excited to give it another go. 5. CORROSION (NEW). I adore engine builders, and this one is super cool. I really like how the timing of when you use things and gain things is important. I didn't feel like your parts no longer being usable felt like "corroding", per se, but that's a picky point. A lot of reviews for this game were not positive, but I thought it was great. 4. BEYOND THE SUN (-2). How is it that a game whose art makes it look like a prototype, a game with area control and a massive tech tree, has wormed its way into my heart as it has? I just don't know! It's just so enjoyable, and I love how the production works. Not a massive amount of replayability but I don't care. It's so good. 3. UNDERWATER CITIES (+0). I am becoming a big Vladimír Suchý fan, but though I enjoy all his games that I've tried, this is easily my favourite. It's just fun. You feel like the things you're doing are a waste until you get that right card and then you see why it's all worth it. 2. RAJAS OF THE GANGES (+3). Apparently I like it even more than you two do! Haven't played it an a while. But you said all the things about it, so ... ... WAIT FOR IT ... 1. YOKOHAMA (+0). This game has such appeal to me. First of all, even though it isn't the most complex in terms of gameplay, you look super intelligent when you play it because it's a visual dog's-breakfast of components. Secondly, the theme is adorable. Thirdly, its main mechanic is so unique; it's almost pick-up-and-deliver and almost worker placement and almost route building, but not entirely any one of those. Everyone in my group loves this game. Thanks for a great list and a good fun time!

I was thinking "jesus, this is as Euro as a list can get", and then... 39:14 that's literally the game ProZD used in his "Ameritrash vs Euro games" video to satirize how euro games work, and everything in this list looks even more complicated than his fictitious game, except Ares Expedition, even I have that one, everything else looks like the non-existent _Jamestown_ for me.

Yes, the designer emailed KS backers and let us know he is planning on bringing an expansion and reprint of Clans of Caledonia in the second half of 2023 to crowdfunding. I also have it in my top 10 and don’t think it needs an expansion but will be excited to see what it is … but less excited about how it will be stored since the base game box has no room left.

Agreed about the expansion, excited, bummed by the need for a diff box (I think the designer said something about the expansion box becoming the new storage? Might be making that up)

CoC tends to be put in the shadow of Terra Mystica and Gaia Project, which is a true shame. While they share DNA, CoC is its own game and it is fantastic. And while I love GP, I find CoC way, way less brain burning while still providing a pretty similar experience.

Sorry bros, but as much as I like your passion and energy, this list is laughable! I mean, it's supposed to be "the top 10 greatest games OF ALL TIME" and the oldest game on your list was published some 12 years ago only (Castles of Burgundy, 2011). I can't believe there are no pre-2011 games that would qualify for your Top 10... unless you are new to the hobby and you've only played the most recent ones?

That’s fair but in the end this is our list. Every single list ever, is subjective. We’ve played lots of games from before 2011, and these are still our 10 favorite.

Hello ... I'm very very new to this world of games ( physical ) and I was struggling from where to move next from deckbuilders ( which was my entry gate ). I thought i was no fan of dice because of the random element, but i've decided to try your Burgundy ( based on love it received numerous times on your channel ) . And to my own surprise , it totally hit the spot. Tried it on BGA and now considering getting the physical copy. Many many thanks for bringing it up.

This was awesome. I've never watched a Top 100 where I've wanted to play such a high number of the games. So many accessible to medium weight games that have been tried and tested, not super heavy overproduced KS campaign games. Also gave me so many new to me games to check out such as Claim, Paint the Roses, Shakespeare, Ex Libris, Stop Thief, Castell and Wendake. Also appreciate the editing and B-Roll. I finally had a chance to play Castle Burgandy and it did something interesting to my brain. Instead of just hoping for a lucky die roll which I don't like, it became more about looking at all your options and being able to pivot to work with whatever you get. With that, it became more interesting than it first looked. I have Viticulture so you are correct Nick! Maybe one day we'll get a game of it going!

Le Havre is great, but has one main challenge: it is lonnnnng. I've only ever played it with 2, and I have a hard time imagining playing it with more than that. Curious: Do you ever play the short version of this game and, if so, what do you think of it? Also, give Nusfjord a try sometime. It is an underrated gem of a game from Uwe. It is one of his more recent designs that actually harkens back to old school Uwe, and it plays in only around 20 to 30 mins per player.

That’s interesting we play Le Havre super quick but it can be long at higher player counts. And we just picked Nusfjord up and it’s awesome!

@@TheBrothersMurph Le Havre isn't too bad with two players. 1.5 hours or so? I could see it going faster with experience. My fear is that 45 mins per player for every additional player, and also being unsure how much I'd want to keep up with more than one other player's tableau. I do still want to try it with at least 3, though, to see how it goes.

Love your energy and chemistry team! It's probably really hard not to do, as you are both so enthusiastic about what the other is saying, but when one of you is explaining a game over B-roll, it is really distracting to hear the other one say "yeah" after every sentence, or say somthing to that effect. Again it might be super hard to avoid, but honestly I couldn't unhear it after I noticed it. Hope that helps get you even more viewers for future videos, as you def put the work in to it.
