The cavalry scenes were all real. They made little trenches for the horses to run in so they wouldn't be afraid to run straight at another horse and they wouldn't run over Kit Harington, who was really standing there in the middle. They made a pretty interesting video on the making of the episode.

@@gunkulator1 There is a huge difference between a commander and a schemer. Ned misread the situation in the context of political schemes, which he wasn't used to from ruling his own court. In retrospect this is exactly what Sansa meant when she told Jon that he doesn't know him like she does and that he shouldn't do what he wants. The moment she told him they're not getting Rickon back, he should have planned it all from there but as a brother I understand where Jon's mindset was in that moment. Just imagine being seconds away from saving your sibling and having them die right in fron of you... Jon was blinded by grief. Ramsey played him like a fiddle. Which begs the question, how would Robb have acted in that moment ? There are better ways to beat someone when you keep a cool head, and as a leader, it's what you are forced into. What's funny about it is how wrong everyone who says he should have zig-zagged are. Zig-zagging would have kept him in range of the bow, and with how good an archer as Ramsey was, moving from side to side was NOT going to make him miss. Rickon didn't really have any good options. He could try to run straight ahead as fast as he could to get out of bow range, but that was about it. There weren't any trees in the area he could run into to make Ramsey's view more obscured, so straight ahead was his only option.

@@ms_scribbles In an ideal, one-on-one case, if Rickon had run zigzag in a true random way, his chances of getting hit by an arrow are almost 0%. But humans aren't random, we always seek pattern. So, his zigzag run would practicality be pseudo random. If he zigzagged he would have been tired and unable to get out of range sooner and thus easier to target, and most importantly; Ramsay conditioned Rickon to go in a straight line by hitting on sides (missing on purpose), so in this case zigzagging puts him in more danger.. but lets say he did zigzag masterfully, Ramsay would have used the archers standing beside him.

I actually wish they had done more to make us attach to his character cause it ends up feeling like a worthwhile sacrifice for the cause but in Jon’s mind it isn’t, we just don’t even get to see the other characters’ love for him really so he feels very pointless.

@@orothien was that their intention with Rickon? Maybe, but it didn’t seem that way… from what I gather a shaggy dog story is about making people care about something that was meaningless in the end anyway. But here I didn’t care about Rickon to begin with and he was meaningless in the end, nothing misleading about it, just seemed like they didn’t have the time or energy to give true life to his character, which is a little unusual given the style of the rest of the story where they make us deeply love a character just to kill them off anyway. That seems more in line with the shaggy dog story concept where as Rickon is an exception from it here. From other comments from book readers it seems Rickon had more character development in the books but I haven’t read them so can’t say for myself.

Absolutely one of the worst battles and episodes of GoT. Completely cliche and Hollywood garbage. 1. Ramsey deserved and should have completely won the battle. He did everything right. Manipulating Jon Snow in every way, by luring him close to the archers and within cavalry charge, and using the casualties of the battle as an tactical advantage by surrounding Jon's army. 2. Jon's ridiculous plot armor. He should've have died like several times. He did EVERYTHING wrong. He survived 10+ rains of arrows, a cavalry charge specifically aimed at him alone, suffocation and in an overall chaotic battle. The Giant should have used Jon Snow as a weapon, the Boltons would just vaporize because of Jon's immortality (plot armor). 3. Sansa coming in with the Knights of the Vale at the very end doesn't make any sense. Why did Sansa withheld such important information from Jon?! The victory was completely undeserved and just a fan service, avoiding all logic. This isn't what made GoT a great show. The uncertainty, realism and the unpredictability did.

Here is my take on why Sansa didn't tell Jon: First, she just didn't trust anyone to help her after the years of being abused and tormented. Moreover, Jon wasn't planning to fight the battle the way she felt it needed to be fought in order to win. She understood that Jon, like Ned and Robb, are were honorable but were not playing the game the way she had seen it played and learned how to play it over the years. She knew Jon would be tricked and played by Ramsay somehow. If she told Jon that she had the Vale, Jon is too distinguished and honorable to use them as a sneak attack. He would have wanted the Vale to join his line and fight in that man-to-man honorable fashion. If that happened, the numbers were still mismatched and they would have wasted the Vale. Jon still would have been tricked by Ramsay to charge in too quickly, the army with the Vale would have followed, still been trapped, and they would have lost. She actually used Jon's plan and Ramsay's counter-strategy to perfection. Telling Jon ahead would have been a mistake, and Ramsay still probably would have won the battle. Furthermore, she made it clear that she just didn't trust anyone but herself. She knew what she was doing from the moment she spoke to Ramsay on the field, and she was right. Period.
@jamesmswenko8292

That's not true at all, the Vale declaring for Jon early means more houses would have joined his side and others would have defected from the Boltons, these are the guys who fought with King Robert and Ned Stark to win the Iron throne, not to mention Sansa failed to tell Jon anything useful about Ramsay when she had the chance, he straight up asked her what he should do and what does she say about the man she knows about more than anybody? 'I don't know'... This character is a joke.

This is just dumb. Anyone trying to defend the writing and character decisions after season 4 are fighting a losing battle. By the way, if Sansa was willing to sacrifice a whole bunch of people who signed up on a suicide mission for her, knowing she had a giant army at her back that could’ve made it a much easier fight, she is no better than Cersei.
@CoryGasaway

@@itsyoboyb6314There were only 2,000 knights of the Vale. That still only gives them close to equal yet most likely still about 1,000 soldiers less. If they joined Jon's army on the field, Jon still falls into Ramsay's trick, and that number is wasted as they still would have been surrounded by Jon's ridiculous decision to charge when tricked. Sansa just flat out didn't tell Jon because she didn't trust anyone. She made that quite clear. She had a more intelligent plan, she kept it hidden, and it worked. Bottom line. Is it weak writing? Sure. Is it the best character motivation for said decision? Maybe not, but it's logical.

@@CoryGasaway you think it’s logical to send your brother to certain death, when he is only fighting cause of and for you, because you don’t trust your own brother and think you are smarter? That makes sense to you? The truth is, once Sansa escaped from Ramsey, she became a villain. She just wasn’t thought of that way cause “yay strong women”.
@CoryGasaway
Жыл бұрын
@@itsyoboyb6314She didn't send Jon to his death. She knew that either her plan works or Jon dies anyways. Jon was going to be on the field of battle regardless. There's a chance he could have died in the first minute of the battle anyways, just like any other soldier. The only way her plans succeeds if is she let's Ramsay throw all his forces out first before she uses the Vale in that surprise ambush. The battle would have happened regardless and Jon could have easily died at any moment so that doesn't change the moment for the surprise attack she and Baelish had planned. Again, the only way they win was that way. You had to get Ramsay confident enough to throw all his forces at them. Jon wouldn't have been able to achieve that.

A tidbit of this episode: "Battle of the Bastards" was written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Miguel Sapochnik. The episode received immense critical acclaim, with several reviewers calling it a "masterpiece", and being praised as one of the series' best episodes as well as one of the greatest television episodes of all time. Critics described the battle in the North as "terrifying, gripping and exhilarating", Harington's performance received high praise, and Daenerys' reunion with her dragons at the beginning of the episode was deemed "thrilling". The eponymous battle took 25 days to film and required 500 extras, 600 crew members, and 70 horses. It notably won the Emmy award for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing; the episode was Kit Harington's choice to support his nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Sapochnik also won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the episode. Miguel Sapochnik also had directed the fifth-season episodes "The Gift" and "Hardhome" which were also some of the best episodes in the series. Game of Thrones had a lot of episodes that had outstanding writing, vision and direction that were better than a lot of movies past or present on television.

Visually and with the choreography, it's definitely my favorite battle. The thing that drags it slightly down for me is the plot armor. Jon definitely shouldn't have survived that, and Sansa not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vale just so she can make a grand appearance feels a little off. Still, it's such a great episode.
@mariahdaley4773

I disagree with your take on this. Yeah, of course Jon has a bit of plot armor. But in a battle like this there will be survivors on both sides. They seem exceptionally lucky, but some will survive. Jon has at least as good a chance of survival as anyone else. And I think Sansa didn’t want to be indebted to Little Finger in any way, so she waited until the last minute to send for the knights of the vale. She clearly doesn’t trust Little Finger, so she couldn’t be sure he would come. And she probably didn’t want Jon to plan around the nights of the vale, just in case. That said, I admit there is more than one way to look at all of this, and maybe my perspective is biased by my sympathy toward Sansa.
@gunkulator1
Жыл бұрын
Sansa not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vale was hers and Littlefinger's plan all along. That was the whole point of their meeting. Sansa goads Jon into attacking Ramsey even though he is hopelessly outnumbered. The gives Ramsey the confidence that he can defeat Jon's army in the field. Otherwise, he just stays behind the walls of Winterfell and wins by default since Winter makes siege impossible. Also, mounted knights are useless in a siege. They had to lure Ramsey out from behind the walls in order for the Knights of the Vale to be effective and their coming had to be a complete secret, otherwise Ramsey's spies catch wind of it.

@@mariahdaley4773still jon should have 0% chance to survive it was to much plot armor, he charged alone no one would survive that. And doesn’t have excuse to sansa don’t tell jon about the vale. In all fairness, no matter how realistic a story tries to be, it has to have some element of plot armour for its characters, otherwise there's virtually no story that can be told. Even the characters in GOT who had very realistic deaths still had some plot armour at one point or another.
@AriixYT

@@gunkulator1 I don't think Ramseys spies would've caught that. Also, Jon definitely should've been angry at Sansa afterwards instead of thanking her. Like sure, the plan worked out in the end, but she basically sacrificed that many people just to get a slight advantage, especially considering how important honor is to Jon. Like, they could've coordinated the attack way better if Sansa had just trusted Jon. Like for example, they could've launched their surprise attack BEFORE 80% of the men were dead? Why did they have to wait so long? The battle sacrifices a lot of logic for the sake of hype, and it definitely did deliver hype, but it just left me with a sour taste after I thought about it... though during my first reaction I was also very much in awe.
