Ya this movie was really good. One of the main factors that caused this movie to underperform was some licensing decisions implemented by the D&D management that had hard core players infuriated. Those players and their followers essentially blockaded the game and some of the peripherals for months until the company reversed their licensing policy. No martter how excited players were for the movie, most of them simply decided not to support the project out of protest.

As it stands today, D&D has made $208.2 million in box office. It’s really weird that a movie that brings in that much money flopped. It had a huge $150m budget. Of the goss the cinemas get 50%. It’s a bit sad but they could have made it cheaper as the amazing part of the movie was the script and the acting delivery. It was just really fun. But hopefully we’ll get more D&D movies, if they can learn to control costs a bit.

I think another unintended consequence of Covid was that people learned how to find content online where they really didn't realize they could previously. I think movies post Covid have taken a hard hit at the theaters because many people just don't need to go out to the theaters anymore. It is really just a novelty now. It is just easier to watch a new release online than dealing with expensive snacks, sticky floors and crying babies. Movie theaters seem to be circling the drain.

Also, it was sandwiched between John Wick 4 and Super Mario Bros. Honor Among Thieves released just a week after John Wick 4 and that movie had a long tail. It was still raking a sizeable amount during Easter. The target audience for the 3 films have an overlap and people decided to spend their money on a proven franchise and/or a beloved character instead. It didn't help that Honor Among Thieves was marketed poorly. Production was over budget so they skimped on marketing. Perhaps if they released it later during Thanksgiving or pre-Christmas, after Baldur's Gate 3's success, and ride it's coattail, they may have had the chance to at least even breakeven. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess as no one could have predicted how successful BG 3 will be.

Came down to the comments to make this point. My D&D group had been planning on going to see it as a group in place of one of our regular sessions. Then the OGL mess happened, multiple members of the group swore they would never give WotC another cent, and the idea was promptly scrapped. I would also add that, at least for us "older" D&D players, we remember the abomination that was the movie in the '90's and were very hesitant to see the franchise destroyed again with something similar. That was certainly one reason I didn't want to see it. Regardless of how good Jeremy Irons normally is, even he couldn't save that one and his hamming it up actually hurt it, I think.

I refused to see the D&D movie or buy anything from D&D until they put the word perpetual into the OGL. They need to make it impossible for the same tactic to be tried again later.

The biggest reason movies are flopping in this economy is just that. The economy. Who has money to go out week after week and watch movies in a theater? If you inculded popcorn and drink it costs between 40-60$ now. It's the plague of hyper-inflation. If it wasn't for Black Friday this year, X-mas shopping would be almot non-existent in bigger stores because a suspect a lot of people will be looking for gifts at Dollarama because thats all they can really afford. Rent eats up about 70-80% of people's income and then they have food and bills on top of that. Prices both in the film industry and the overall economy at large are the main reason so many businesses are seeing a drop on consumers. It's just not sustainable. Businesses need to find ways to get prices down or this trend will continue.

Everything you said is 100% true and well articulated. You then include the modern convenience of the internet and streaming services, gaming consoles. Why would I waste a entire evening and 60$ when I can stay at home on my couch? It also hasnt helped that Hollywood worked overtime the last few years to tell half the country they dont like them very much. When on the fence whether to stay home and play Elden Ring drop 60$ watching a movie. I recall Hollywood award shows and their entertainment media calling me a bigot, makes my decision a bit easier. Its not just one thing, but many pieces to a puzzle and everyone is different, but it does seem the non blockbuster film is on the endangered species list.

The financial success or drop of a movie can find its rational explanations in many external factors, which undoubtedly, do not alter its intrinsic value in a good or bad way, whatsoever. A commercial flop does not necessarily mean that the movie is bad. I only trust my judgment when it comes to movies. It's all about tastes and feelings, and it's personal, intimate. Movies “flopping” are 100% on the theater industry. Tickets are $13-15 (20+ for 3d or something special) $15 for popcorn. $12 for a drink. Your avg theater visit for 2 becomes like $50-60. This list alone is a $500 watch list. F that. I’ll happily rent it for $10 at home or wait for it to go on streaming that I pay like $10-15/mo per service already.

Personally I think The Marvels deserved better, should have at least done better than Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantamania. Better acting, better editing and better CGI (for the most part). Do have the feeling when it comes out on Disney+ it'll be the top filim on there for a couple of weeks.

"Killers of the Flower Moon"'s length meant it could be shown less than other films in any particular day. It's also definitely not a "date" movie, but a serious look at a very bad episode in American history. Which a lot of people would prefer to be buried under history that teaches "patriotism". Which would ignore anything bad that happened in the past. "Are You There" was extremely poorly marketed. "Beau is Afraid" never made it to a lot of theaters. And if it did, it would be gone in a week. "Joyride" was seen as a "chick flick". Another of the many recent films where good looking young women go out and behave badly. Tired premise. "Air"? When it's going to be streaming in a short time, why not wait? "Dead Reckoning" was the second Tom Cruise blockbuster in the same year. People had already seen him in "Top Gun". Twice in one year? Nope.

Of the ten movies discussed, I’ve seen 3 in the theaters : Killers of the Flower Moon, Air and Infinity Pool. Infinity Pool probably didn’t do so good because it’s not an easy film to watch. Much like his father, Brandon Cronenberg’s films are very subjective and unsettling.

In today's society there is to many ways to watch a movie. It's hard to call a movie a "flop" when you don't have to go to the theater anymore. So many streaming services, it'll be on one of them in a few weeks. 😂

D&D largely impacted by the Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro licensing shenanigans where the game maker upset its entire player base. As such, most fans chose to boycott the movie.

I have not seen Killer of the Flower Moon, but loved the book I just can’t sit for 3 1/2 hours without a bathroom break so I will wait until I can watch it at home. For a movie that long it should have an intermission.

I know a crap ton of hardcore DnD fans who still won't watch the movie because of the shit Wizards of the Coast pulled last year with the OGL. They turned a lot of fans off them entirely with that.

INIFINITY POOL was brilliant, but it flopping does not surprise me because it is not a popcorn movie and there's no way to advertise a movie that cerebral and disturbing. And I also loved KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, but can also understand how people stayed away from it. For the record my fave Scorsese movies are CAPE FEAR and ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE.

Why pay to go see a movie when there are always so many movies to watch? No matter what the movie is, you only have to wait a few weeks, to a few months to see it on a streaming service anyway.

I am a bit of a weirdo in that most standard ad campaigns either pass me by or turn me off, so, to me, D&D just flew completely under the radar until it was already too late. It was still in cinemas, but over here, where everything gets dubbed. the time window for watching things in their original form is tiny.

Even though Dead Reckoning is on streaming now (still named Part One) I haven't watched it yet - specifically because it is part one. I'll get around to it. Interestingly, I did not feel the same regarding Dune, but probably b/c I knew I would watch Dune (Pt 1) several times prior to the next installment. D&D was a lot of fun, but nothing that would get people to go to the theatres.

What killed movies in theaters: - The tickets for a family of four is $50+ - Movies being available online 30-60 days after release - All those clear, big screens people bought since COVID offer a better viewing experience than the noisy, overpriced theater.

Beau Is Afraid is a well epic journey but I like Heridatary and Midsommar more. Mia Goth delievers once again in Infinity Pool. What you said about Mission Impossible does not make sense: They have to continue the same story otherwise there would be a gigantic plot hole. I know the title is getting changed but they are not just starting from scratch totally.

I think you need to redefine the meaning of a 'Flop'. Lots of these were good/popular movies they just didn't do well at the box office because they was released simultaneously online. Why pay £10 - £20 to watch it a Cinema when you can watch it from the comfort of your own couch?
@markula_4040

You can wish it did better but no movie deserves anything. Just because it's good doesn't mean everyone needs to see it immediately or at all. Going to the theaters has become such a chore with prices and such. Unless it's something that needs to be seen on a bigger screen, why should I brave a trip to see it when I can wait a few months to watch it at home? Making sure you've seen the latest movie, TV show or played the latest video game has become so tiring.

I think one problem with "Air" was its title. It leaves me feeling...so what? I have no idea what the film is about, just based on the title. ( which when deciding on a night out, makes it lower on the list of other movies where I have a better idea of the theme.)
