With the first part of the French seam you’ve made a lot of work for yourself. Firstly, there’s no need to iron the seam open and, secondly, the fabric can be cut with both layers at the same time instead of individually. (For a straight seam, a rotary cutter will save time and also give a cleaner finish than scissors.). I’ve just found your tutorials, and find them very helpful. Thank you x

Wow. I have sewn for many years (albeit not for the past couple of decades) and just learned from your video that the "top stitching" I have been doing on my 3D face masks is actually edge stitching! I use the inside edge of the right side of the foot (facing you) as my guide, so it is probably only about 1/8" or so from the seam. I have also just used my regular size stitch (probably about 2.7, so close to 3) but will try it with a bit longer stitch, too. I love learning new stuff! Subscribed, with much thanks.

Great videos. I've been sewing since I was 8 years old, but I'm still learning and your videos are either teaching me new stuff or confirming that I've been doing things right. One thing, with your French seam, you can do a false felled seam by top-stitching on the right side following the French seam edge underneath. Also, an open felled seam can be done on the right side of your garment so you can see the two rows of stitching-but you have to make sure that your sewing is super straight (this is not my strong point…). Looking forward to more videos!

Thank you for your sewing videos, especially for beginners. I'm a old man and haven't always felt comfortable or welcome in sewing places like fabric shops or classes. I'm always the only man there. Anyway, I got tired of asking women to sew something for me; easy stuff like pillows (which are super expensive to buy) or mend clothing. I decided I could and should do them for myself. So I bought a Brother sewing machine and started experimenting. This was long before I knew how many KZitem videos were around. Sorry to be so long winded. Your videos are clear, direct no BS. Thanks. I'm now making a Flying Geese quilt top with 2970 pieces. It's giving me a lot of sewing practice.

With this model, do you have to by special spools of thread or can you use the spools of thread that have been around for many years?
@TockCustom
4 жыл бұрын
You can use any type of thread with this machine no problem (if you're using a thick topstitch or upholstery thread, make sure you use a "TopStitching Needle"). I do not recommend using thread that you've had in your house for years though, especially cotton thread spools. They will actually decompose over time and become very weak, so make sure you use some fresh thread spools :) Hope this helps, thanks for watching :)

It was working fine until I made another bobbin. I tried changing the needle and even thread but still wont sew correctly. Any ideas for a fix is welcome as I was trying to complete a project.
@TockCustom
4 жыл бұрын
Try to keep the top tension around 3 or 4 for standard projects. A new needle was smart, so that's good. Make sure there is nothing sticky on your needle, or on the spool of thread - or that the thread isn't snagging on anything. Anytime I run into issues like that, I just unthread everything (top and bottom) and rethread everything. That usually helps. Otherwise you may have to clean out your machine (dust and loose threads) and oil it. General maintenance goes a long way. Beyond that it's tough to troubleshoot issues by text over KZitem, forgive me if this isn't helpful. Hope you get everything all worked out!

The newest version is PE-Design 11 - You cannot purchase this software online... at all. Please be aware there are a lot of scams online. This software is very valuable, and you'll only be able to buy it from approved local vendors (such as high end sewing machine shops). It also comes with a dongle and memory card that must be plugged into your computer for the software to operate. If you plan on doing a lot of commission work, the software will certainly pay for itself in a short amount of time. But, if you just plan on getting it for personal projects, it is certainly a large investment. Hope this helps!!

confused about your "french seam" . Because most commercial patterns have a standard 5/8 seam allowance I usually sew the initial seam with only a 3/8 seam. Trim the seam, turn the fabric, and finish as you did with 1/4 edge stitch. 1/4 and 3/8 added together equal the original 5/8 seam allowance. To french seam as you demonstrated you would have to start with a 7/8 seam allowance or your finished project will be a bit small. Otherwise as always, your video is clear, your instructions are understandable and easy to follow. Of all the sewing channels I watch your tutorials are by far the best. Thank you for doing what you do.

I rarely trim my seams when doing french seams. I take the lazy person's route..... For 5/8" seam allowances: I sew 1/4" first. Then, finish with 3/8". The seam is already encased inside the seam. For 1/2" seam allowances: I sew 1/8" first. Then, finish with 3/8". No trimming needed. Of course, all of this is preferential. I know most people want their french seams to finish 1/4" wide. This just works for me. Also, I do take into consideration the type of fabrics that I'm using, too. Just subscribed. Yay me! 👍

With nr 9 instead of cutting of the excess fabric on the inside of the seem you could also just saw them together with the fabric difference right. You can just line up the fabric unevenly so you don't need to cut them. Nice tutorial ^_^

Thanks for showing close-ups of the stitched results, a lot of videos show results from far away and I can't really see enough details. It would be great to see some of these stitches in finished / real projects to better appreciate why and when they are used. Great video! French seam was the first seam I learned. No trimming is done. 1st seam on out side is made 1/4 inch from the edge. Flip inside out and sew 3/8 from the edge will give you a 5/8th seam (1/4 + 3/8 = 5/8 ) plus no trimming is needed because all of the raw edge is enclosed in the 2nd seam.

Most machine needles are universal and have a name along with it. For example I use "Denim Needles" when making jeans, or "Ball-Point Knit Needles" when sewing knit fabrics. For this is was just using a standard 14/90 needle, which is typical for medium weight woven cotton fabrics. You can usually get away with using other needles too though :)

By adding that piece in the back of your open top stitch is close to a Hong Kong seam. Works well with over coats and heavier garments.(or so I read) I've only made the seam on coating material to see what it looked like. Nice video, the various types of seams while we don't normally use them all is fun to play with and put different ones in sewing projects.

Also look into a 'laser guide' to show you where you are stitching so you dont have to measure by 'next to the foot'- think of 'laser guide' as they use on circular saws! Love your channel and going to watch more Love from CY/EU! Be safe!

One question excuse my ignorance when you take in a shirt at the side you mentioned doing a straight stitch then a zig zag stitch why do you not fold the fabric on the seam and just do one normal strait stitch or am I being stupid . Please keep the videos coming love watching them . Enjoy your day x

It depends on the type of shirt. If it's a button shirt, you can easily find the side seams, but if its a T-shirt, many of them do not have side seams, so you have to press it flat to find it. As for the stitch type - if its a woven fabric, I always do a straight stitch. If its knit, I do a stretch stitch. Hope that all makes sense. I know this video was about seams, but I have done videos on tailoring garments as well :)

Great beginner videos i am looking to buy my first machine. i was looking to add kevlar fabric to my jeans to make bike pants. my question is.... is it possible to use a sewing machines to add the kevlar fabric to jeans instead of spending almost $200 buying pants. and if possible what kind of needle and tread do i need to buy, to do this project.
@TockCustom

I'd recommend a heavy duty machine if you're looking to do kevlar (the one I have is the Brother ST150HDH, about $300). You can totally do that yourself and save a ton of money. I don't know how much Kevlar fabric is, but I'm certain it'll save you a bunch! Use a denim or a leather needle in your machine when you get setup, might be smart to do some small samples for testing before you dive into your final project. Hope this helps, great question!

Seems like the French seam could be used in any situation that the flat felled seam could. It looks much easier than cutting one edge, folding under, ironing the seam and top stitching in the flat felled method. By the way, thank you! 😀
@TockCustom
4 жыл бұрын
I suppose you're right about that. Especially if you did the French seam correctly, which I did not do in this video lol. There are some situations where you wouldn't be able to do a French seam actually, where putting 'wrong sides' of the fabric together over another seam could create issues with bulkiness in the seam (Like the shoulder seam on a sleeve). Then again it could create a unique look that people might enjoy too. Everything is worth experimenting with! Thanks for the comment, have a wonderful weekend!

The first stitch we did was essential for any basic construction. Most of the other ones are cosmetic stitches to add some extra polish to your projects (as well as strengthen your stitches). Sewing is a very versatile craft, so I use different stitches in certain situations I think they'll be the most beneficial or look the best. Have some fun experimenting and do what you think looks/works best for you! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

@TockCustom
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for such positive feedback! The bobbin thread will always be on the 'wrong' side of the fabric, or the inside... so you won't see it unless you look on the inside. In some cases, using colored bobbin thread is helpful, but most of the time it isn't important. Great question, hope that helps!

@gabrielarivera8058
4 жыл бұрын
@@reivenwolf you probably have a tension issue. I would first re thread the machine including the bobbin( make sure you didn't put it backwards its a common mistake) plus make sure your using the right needle which if your doing denim should be larger to go through think layers. If that doesn't help: There is a small knob with numbers on it above your needle where the thread goes around, I believe the 301 has 0-9 try to play around with that it should normally be about the middle but depending on your fabric it could be a higher or lower number needed. Sounds like your number might be a little high.

That French seam is pretty clever! Would it be faster to sew it at 1/2 in inch or less, not trim it, then sew the second seam? Is trying to save time this way a disaster in the making?
@TockCustom
4 жыл бұрын
People have told me its much cleaner and faster to sew a 1/4" inch seam, flip and iron it, and then do a 3/8" inch seam allowance on the 2nd part. That way you don't need to trim anything, and you end up with a clean 5/8" seam allowance! So you're totally thinking the right way :)

@TockCustom

This was my first attempt at doing a french seam. Some viewer have pointed out a more simple way to do this. You just do the first seam at 1/4" inch seam allowance, press it open, fold it over, and then do a 3/8" inch seam - which will get you a perfect 5/8" inch seam (Which is the standard for garment construction). So much easier, and no trimming the seam at all! Hope that helps!
