My personal Murray Gold list would have to include "Breaking the Wall" from Heaven Sent, and "Clara's Theme". But it's proof of Gold's brilliance that I can't argue with your selections at all. As you said, you could easily double or triple the size of your list and still be completely correct. And although he didn't compose it per se, his arrangement of the Doctor Who theme song for Eleven's era was incredible.

TL;DR - This is Gallifrey tells a story and Clara's theme at the end of Hell Bent made me cry. Definitely "This is Gallifrey, our Childhood our home" would end up somewhere high on my list. It's quite literally, the Doctor's memory of Gallifrey. The guitar-clock in the background. The strings that show its glory, it feels like if it's describing the landscape and beauty of the planet. The brass moment in the middle feels heroic, like if that was the moment of the birth of Time Lords with all their might. And the brass moment at the end could be the Time War. The whole track feels like home. Many Doctor Who pieces have a lot of tension in them, and here? It's the release. You'd play it at the end of the day and dream of home. Anyways, recently I've learned that when you have a skilled composer he most certainly will tell a story through his art, literally. Hiding bits and pieces so that only your subconscious will notice. Diving into the music theory made me see soundtracks in a completely different way. And I have to tell you, Clara was right - "You said that memories become stories when we forget them... Maybe some of them become songs". I'd also include the guitar piece played by Capaldi at the end of Hell Bent. Man, Clara's leitmotif, Bad Wolf leitmotif, and all that in such a beautiful and heart-breaking unity... The Em chord at the end... and so I cried.

I always appreciate when the soundtrack is acknowledged (especially when it's as good a Gold's) it's often understated how much a correctly timed piece can elevate a scene. Personally I really like 'The Daleks' for the atmospheric build up to me it made the daleks far scarier back in series 1. Also 'A Dazzling End' as it captures Donna's hope for a better world before fading into the twist that this Donna would die. Other than that I agree with most of your picks, Keep up the good work.

I disagree that "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" is 10s theme. To me, "The Doctor Forever" and it's variations were used more to represent Tennent's doctor. Its uses in Gridlock, Family of Blood, Runaway Bride, The Sontaran Stratagem, and Day of the Doctor I think reinforce that.

I love Murray Gold's bombast! The soaring music, swelling as the Doctor rises, and you want to punch the air. I can't separate out the music from their scenes, it just evokes the emotional moment. For that reason, any preferences underscore that moment in the story. I am the Doctor, on the roof of the hospital. The Long Song, as the Doctor exposes his heart, his pain, his history at Akhaten. Any notes from Vale/Vale Decem, have me instantly on the verge of tears. So many songs, their names forgotten, just summon the feelings, of Rose Leaving, the leaf drifting down from the tree. Any of the music from Vincent and the Doctor. For so many I wish there were also a version with the dialog over the music, too. The hear Nine's words, over 'Hologram', or the Doctor's speech at Akhaten. Have to, and happy to agree 'A Good Man?', is an excellent piece. That defines the entire arc for Peter's three seasons. Thank you. I will miss him. But like the Doctor and the others behind the scenes, change is what keeps Who vibrant, new exciting!

Solid list. The way you can approach such a list is quite interesting, as music being so expansive, it means different things for different people, especially with soundtrack music. For me it would be: 1) Doomsday 2) Songs of Captivity and Freedom 3) River's suite: Melody Pond + The Enigma of River Song + The Wedding of River Song 4) Trenzalore/The Long Song/I am Information (Reprise) 5) A Good Man? (Twice Upon A Time Variation) 6) Breaking the Wall/The Shepherd's Boy 7) Amy In The TARDIS 8) The Majestic Tale (Of A Madman In A Box) 9) The Doctor's Theme (Series 1) 10) The Singing Towers [Special mentions: This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood. Our Home, A River Of Tears + Forgiven, The Lone Dalek, Madame De Pompadour] Murray Gold has been such a titan for Who. I am probably more grateful for him than almost anyone else who's been on it since it's revival. Although of course without the rest of the Who teams and their amazingness Gold's music would have nothing to back up :-P I hope the next composer can bring such consistent quality and inspired scope to the genre and themes of the show.

nice choices. How you settled on just ten amazes me. I love so much about Murray Gold's music from Doctor Who. I have a lot of individual tracks from different seasons. One of my most personal favorites is the farewell scene for Amy when she steps back to the angel and joins Rory in the past. The music is spectacular. Like you said, the music tells a story. The music is leading you to a point where you know your heart is going to get broken, and you don't care. It is the beautiful swelling of the music at the exact right time, that slight pause, that cliffhanger and then tragedy, which the music conveys so well. Was surprised the music from Heaven Sent wasn't on your list, when the Doctor was talking in the T.A.R.D.I.S. as his mind palace and he is telling us about how Time Lords like to die among their own kind, in reality he is crawling through the castle. That music just floats you along the story line of what you know and what he is saying.

I'm not sure if it has an official name yet, but it's not the one that plays whilst he's breaking the wall. It's a more solitary sounding piece earlier on the episode. You can hear it when he pulls him self out of the water after jumping in it.

my personal favorite is "The Doctor's Theme Series 4" essentially an epic rendition of the ninth doctor's theme made for ten. Its on the series 4 official soundtrack. Check it out!

I absolutely love the piece of music that plays when the Doctor is running to "save" River in Forest of the Dead, apparently it's called "The Doctor's Theme" on the season 4 soundtrack

I wish you had been able to include what's known as "Don't". It's that instrumental playing at the end of Midnight and it was never officially released on a soundtrack but it is a beautiful piece of music that I wish was released. If I was to make a list, it would be my top choice

The Four Knocks. The one piece of music that Gold himself says he cannot revisit without sobbing his eyes out and I agree. Drop dead gorgeous.

I've really grown to miss the female vocals from Doctors theme, Doomsday and others; it added a lot of emotion and also eariness to a scene

Just thinking of all the nostalgia and love I have for each of the Doctors themes. 9's will always be a nice addition and the impossible planet always unnerved me! I guess 10,11,12 when ever I hear them will give me the feeling everything's getting solved and gonna be alright. The others are more conditional but perfect if used right, the "greatest story ever told" is such a heroic sounding song which also makes me feel happy and that everything will be resolved. All 10 are brilliant for a brilliant show.

For me 10) breaking the wall 9) song for ten 8) Amy and the TARDIS 7) all the strange creatures 6) the lone dalek 5) 11th doctor's regen theme (I forget it's name) 4) the impossible planet 3) boe 2) doomsday 1) the girl in the fireplace Yeah I know my list is very 9th and 10th doctor heavy but they were my childhood man, and I still think they have the best themes. I do like some of the new ones a lot though.

Oh thank God you put the Impossible Planet on there, you were getting further through the list and I was about to comment about The Impossible Planet soundtrack, but then it popped up! Good choice! Surprised Breaking the Wall isn't there though.

My five favorites are (in no particular order): The Daleks, The Doctor's Theme (either version), The Shepherd's Boy, All The Strange, Strange Creatures, and last but not least, A Good Man. Murray has contributed so much to the show, and his music is something I love and listen to daily. His songs can evoke so much emotion, and bring so much energy. Him and Hans Zimmer are two of the greatest composers in history as far as I'm concerned.

While I agree with all this, some hidden gem's that didn't make the list: Donna's Theme - S4 and Specials - Never before has an assistants theme been so well suited to the personality of the character. Without knowing the show you can listen to Donna's Theme and know instantly what sort of character she is. Also it's musically intricate and fun to try and play. Don't - Unreleased music from Midnight S4E10, reused throughout S6 for River Song moments - slow moving chords that build and swell before dying away followed by rolling arpeggio. Gives the sorrowful aura of calm in the eye of a storm, danger is on the horizon and this is a chance to pause, recollect, and gather your thoughts before getting back into things. Short but sweet. Rings of Akhaten - S7E7 - While I wasn't a fan of the writing of this specific episode (Leaf ex Machina), there is no denying the beauty of the music, especially Lullaby For a Sleeping God. The contrasting melodies of the two different voices are magical, and it's a joy to listen to live. Shepard's Boy - plays during the "breaking the wall" scene in Heaven Sent S9E11, reused through S10 and then during Capaldi's regeneration speech. - Similar idea to Don't, but positive and optimistic towards what the future holds. Other notable tracks are Dark and endless Dalek night, Cybermen's Theme, London Bridge, Vale Decem, This is/was Gallifrey, Missy's Theme

You should really do a video for your # 20 through 11 picks. I think Murray Gold has contributed enough to get full top 20. Heck he could get a Top 40, like they do on the radio.

Absolutely solid list, I can agree with all of it but one thing, no Rueful Fate of Donna Noble. Such a fantastic track that builds on emotion and western (as in the genre) themes through the hermonica esc sound and lonely somber tone.

It was hard enough to pick my top 10, so I guess I won't rank them in order cause that's definitely gonna kill me. - Hologram (glorious for 9th doctor's regeneration) - Fear (utterly moving... topped with Clara's speech in Listen) - Melody Pond's theme (yeah, basically everything you said in the video) - Breaking the wall (3 words: CAPALDI. HEAVEN. SENT.) - Impossible planet (same reasons you mentioned, also my favorite part was the mellow tone towards the end of the track-- the part used for that awkward conversation 10 and rose had about settling down and also bad wolf bay.... ugh!!! the heartbreak feels are catching up.) - Am I a good man (EPIC!!!) - Doctor's theme (damn, this track... love how it was used throughout the series. although played less during capaldi's run, it did make some few comebacks and the subtle hints of it always gave me chills but in a good way. my 2 favorite variations of this track were the ones in satan pit, where the doctor was dangling over the pit; and the race to save river song in the forest of the dead.) - Amy's theme (* sighs * soooo magical! need I say more?) - Doomsday (of course. rose's lonely lullaby.) - Sad man in a box (tells everything I love about the 11th doctor from his first episode to his last.... just truly a brilliant piece!) Oh, that took me quite a while... Anyway, great video, man!

What I consider to be the 2 most used elements of Murray Gold's writing (and I say this in a good way) are: the haunting, melancholy solo melodies, like the 9th doctor's theme (and I agree with the council, it IS specifically his theme), and the repeated, staccato vamps under trackss like 'I Am the Doctor', or 'A Good Man'. The soft and lyrical melodies I think are a perfect way to capture not only the Doctor's past and struggles as a character, but also the otherworldliness and isolation of being in space. And then all the of the staccato vamps in the strings build such an anticipation, an excitement in what's to come; you're itching to see what adventure is coming next! While Gold's writing is soooooometimes a little heavy on the large, full-bodied orchestral sound......I do love a good rip-roaring horn section. So I kinda just eat it up. :p

Murray Gold did so much great work in just the last ten years--his work seems to have gotten better with each new series IMHO--and maybe you should do a #11-20 video. Song of Freedom and The Long Song are in my personal Top 10.

I think the music in the Capaldi era probably has some of best. His early stuff is really iconic as well, though. Some of my favourites - The Daleks, The Lone Dalek, Father's Day, Doomsday, Breaking the Wall, Towers of Darillium theme, Where There's Tears There's Hope, Missy's theme, A Good Man, The Doctor's theme, Vale Decem, I am the Doctor, This is Gallifrey, All the Strange, Strange Creatures, Bill's theme, Clara's theme (inc. her death music). Just to name a few... Oh, yeah, The Impossible Planet is great as well. There's too many good ones.
