Great advice. Years ago when I first met my mother in law who was the queen of shopping I noticed that every time she wrote a check she never made note of it in her checkbook. I asked her about it and she said her husband dealt with all that. I asked her how she knew if there was money in the checking account again she said her husband dealt with it. She also had no idea what her husbands salary was or what their mortgage utilities or car payments were or even how to deal with any of that should something happen to him. That was when I got VERY serious about knowing about every dollar coming in and going out. Forty years later it’s the most valuable lesson I learned.

@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I agree with you. We didn’t have much. I didn’t even have a bedroom! I slept in the breakfast nook on a little daybed in the kitchen of our small apartment in Chicago. I remember one time as a sophomore in HS I asked my dad for money to buy a Party Dress for an event at school…all he had to give me was $5 . I was so upset because I knew I couldn’t get a Party Dress for only $5. I cried. When I finally calmed down I came up with an idea. The money was enough to buy some fancy material and a dress pattern…so I borrowed a sewing machine and made my own dress! I’d never sewn before but I followed the directions on the pattern and it turned out beautifully! I’ve posted that story on sites before only to get sarcastic remarks like, “so the solution to everyone’s problems is just that they should learn to sew”. Well that’s not the point of the story. The point is if you think about the problem, and are resourceful enough, you can often come up with a solution. Kids these days never developed their resourcefulness ‘muscle’. They haven’t had to.

All very good advice. And thank you for not including the "gems" that "financial experts" say like rent a room in your house and sell your stuff. Many low income seniors don't have an extra bedroom nor do they have stuff that has any monetary value. And if they did, it's probably already been sold. One more item and maybe it's a topic for another day is to find a cheaper place to live, even if that means relocating to another state or country. And people say they want to stay close to their family or friends. But are family and friends helping them out financially so they can stay? Nope. Go live a better life somewhere else where the dollar stretches farther.

No, no. No, absolutely right Gloria. I said the same thing. A lot of people use excuses not to save the biggest excuse is I don't make enough money even if you make minimum wage. Operate in a way like this. You put $5 away from your wages each week. That's $20 a month, that's $20. You would not have if you didn't put $5 away each week. So if you say just buy that you can put money away, people think when you save, you have to save a $100 a week. You don't have to start with $5 a week or month and getting to the habit. And that's how you begin to save.

Hi Carol😊 I use to do nearly all of those things that you encouraged viewers to do and I loved finding a good bargain so much that it became really fun. I became debt free including paying off a student loan early and was so good at saving money that I was able to purchase my cars over the years with cash. People laughed at me because although I had a really good income, I only purchased the new small car instead of the luxury one and so on. Those same ones that laughed at me were the same ones that had their hand out asking to borrow money when a hard time hit them. I did help occasionally but not often. I must admit that in these past 5 years I have gotten away from keeping a good budget. I retired early to take care of my mom, God rest her soul. I was so absorbed in taking care of her (and I don't regret one minute of it) that I lost track of my budget. Thank you for reminding me to get back on track. I don't exactly overspend but I have not reworked my budget to match my social security income yet. I will be starting today though. Thank you so much for sharing this excellent information ❤

Clearly he did not have an emergency savings as when the engine in his Jaguar went out another friend held a fundraiser for him. It may be small to start but as you go it will increase. When we get a raise in SS if I lived within the previous ok, then I take that increase and add it to savings monthly. I take what's left and figure out budget for food and get sales from paper and coupons, and if left entertainment or a treat eat out. After a few months it becomes routine. Sorry this is long, but I live on SS only, but lucky no mortgage just taxes. That I also deduct mo. To pay at end of year. And I have no extra medical insurance widow of military man. Probably one of the most important things we did was working as a team. I love to look at free sites like craigslist and see what people are giving away. I recently picked up a very nice air conditioner for one of my sister in laws because she really needed one and another sister in law needed a snowblower so I got one a couple years ago for her. I change the oil in our vehicles myself and take the oil to our local hazardous waste to drop off and then check out all the free stuff that people drop off after garage, estate sales or just cleaning out their house. Take care.

This is why I tell people live with. In the means if you can downsize if possible downsizes is not for everybody, bad life living alternatively is not for everybody, but if you can do so, trust me, it will help a lot and for those younger people out there in their 40s and 50s think about your retirement as well. Too many people don't think about it, they just live day to day, think about it, what you're going to do and plan this way you can have money put aside if anything happens or you kids who have left the house sell the house, don't try and live the same way you lived when. You were younger. Because your retirement money is not the same as your wages. Before remember that guys.

WTH.. 40s and 50s is way to late to be thinking about retirement. People needed to be thinking about retirement savings in their 20s and 30s. Anytime I was able to get a raise, I put 3/4 of the percent of that raise in savings… I didn’t change my lifestyle to keep up with my increasing earnings.

Great tips Carol! Doing a budget a knowing where every dollar goes is important in getting your expenses below your income whether that means cutting expenses, increasing income, or both. I do have a credit card as some of my expenses require you to use one. However those expenses are accounted for in my budget, and I have never paid any interest as I pay off the amount due plus a bit extra. It's also a cash back card and once the card reaches a certain point value I convert to cash that goes into savings. But no impulse spending applies to the credit card as well. I've never been able to figure out how to do a budget when income changes/fluctuates month to month. SS is always the same, of course, but i also have stocks that pay monthly dividends, and the dividends are always different! I like the structure and accountability of a budget, if i can make it work.

Hey, Carol! Great tips. I would also add declutter and sale things. You would be surprised how many ppl have storage units. In my area it’s $130/month for a 10x10 space! Older folk can have the tendency to hold on to things, so they could make a nice little piece of change selling. Why keep old clothes that are way too small and extra furniture that you know you won’t be using?

I tell people for those who do not want to go back to work if you don't mind downsizing downsizer is the way to go. I'll bundle those people. I'm not retirement age yet but I admit I'm kinda lazy. I don't wanna work work all my life. And this is why I chose alternative living. It's great for me and since I did it. I since I downsized it's been awesome. I don't work as hard as I used to that. My part-time job in a supermarket. My peers are complaining. They need more hours while I sit back and laugh at them. I don't need more hours all because of the choices I made of living all 20 times it works. Guys, downsides is the way to go if you do it properly.

Share this with everyone who ask for $$. I didn’t have an allowance until I was 11 yrs old, & it was a nickel a week, & that’s how I learned to live on dime. But I’ve come to realize that budgeting isn’t intuitive. There’s a young veteran who was down to nothing & living in his car, with help he was able to get an RV. After about 2 months I showed him a job listing 2 blocks away. He got the job & is really happy with it. I’ve offered to take him to the laundromat where I spend $3 to wash & dry a load of clothes, but he prefers to the newest laundromat that’s no less than $10 a load. I wouldn’t mention this but, because he’s out of money every 3 weeks, he ask that I bring him food, which I can barely afford my own.

You really don’t need to do a budget if you know how much money you have left over at the end of every month. We simply don’t purchase anything we don’t need, so our expenses are always flat. I don’t remember the last time we blew money on something that wasn’t necessary.

My downfall is impulsiveness, especially in the grocery store. I usually stock up in the beginning of the month, so that’s when I get fresh fruit and vegetables-but I have to be careful to not get more than I will eat before it spoils. Since my social security is now below the poverty line, groceries have been killing me. I finally started going to the food bank, and may be approved for food stamps this next week, which would be a huge relief. As it stands, I worry about how I will manage oil changes or repairs for my van: my credit has been maxed out on past repairs. But living outside is well worth it all!

While it is important to budget, I really think that there is one thing that should be done even before that for most folks. Way too often folks will make a budget and then fail to abide by it. Either they were way too extreme when they wrote out the budget, or they become angry because they feel they are having to deprive themselves and end up splurging. I really think that it is more important to start by getting an accurate idea how they are currently spending their money. Once a person really understands how they are spending, they begin to understand the real impact of buying that coke from McDonald’s, or what the impact of getting that ice cream cone. Often after really understanding the impact of their spending habits, they start ending up with excess money at the end of the month, even without forming a budget. If they then create a budget it’s much easier to eliminate any unnecessary spending without it feeling like a huge sacrifice, and that makes it much easier to adhere to the budget.
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621

I agree that the most efficient way to put together an accurate budget is to keep track of every dime you spend for a month of two in order to see where your money is actually going. Unfortunately, I have found that with working withi dividuals new to making a budget they find this too tedious and give up after only a fee weeks. So, I suggest writing down estimates and keeping track. Not as efficient but more palatable for beginners.

A budget makes me responsible for what I spend. Sometimes i go over my budget weekly, keeps me focused on what I cannot buy, no matter how much I want something. Failing to plan it out will result getting into trouble. Get on board and stay there. I keep my budget in my cell "NOTE" App so I have it with me wherever I go. Cooking AND eating at home saves me hundreds every month. All my clothes are thrift and discount. No one even knows. But I don't care. This is my life and I need to be responsible for me. Others need to mind their own business! 😂

I have not been able to reach Teresa. The phone number I had for her is not currently in service. She is no longer at thr parknwhere I first met her and I haven't been able to reach the friend who helped clean out her van. I learned a long time ago that my job is to help as much as I can, leave the person better off than when I encountered them, and sometimes that is all I can do. At least now she has a bed she can lay down on instead of sleeping in the front seat, a fridge, and a solar system. But I do have a great report on Cat, the woman living on the side of the road in her trailer. I will hopefully be able to share it this weekend.
