The spore drive makes perfect sense, because it's a callback to the Voyger episode Equinox where the other starfleet ship used living animals to go faster than warp, which was seen as incredibly immoral and so Voyager didn't use it. That episode of Voyager was at least in part written by Bryan Fuller, the initial showrunner for Discovery, hence why he reused the storyline. The reason the spore drive never was used again was because it also involves using sentient life forms

Now that's a good story arc! i kinda like also the scenario of the andorian making first contact with Earth instead of Human, I did also recently read the plotline of a fandom art around the same issues, thus by answering another question "what would happen if agent 201 and Agent 343 would have not died", referring about an orginal TOS episode, where it turn out that exist a group of special agents directed by the Aegis, a powerful species able to predict the outcome of event and to trasport poeples and object through time and space(thus if to preserve life or destroy is always an issue in the series), who tasked the two mentioned agents to hack into an american nuclear missile in 1968, which trasport in fact an multiple orbital satellite weapon, in order to caused it to misfire and then detonated it in low atmosphere to show humanity the risk of nuclear armament, while in the original episode the two agent died in a car accident before they can complete their mission, in this they avoid the accident and they execute tmeselves the mssion, however they decided to be more sure of the physicological effect of such event, they decided to explode the rocket to even further lower altitudine, in doing so unfortunately they created a massive EMP impulse that affect much of the Ural region. Believing that the accident was fact a ruse for an attack, the Soviet Union launch their arsenal starting World War III. Agent 201 and 343 are killed in the crossfire, but while the USA won the conflict by 1971 conquering rthe city of Arkangel, the last main Soviet city intact, the world is left in ruins with over 120 milion directely killed and 420 milions dying from hunger, disease and such, while the UN did not cease to work through the tragedy and try to coordinate a relief programs for the planet, all effort are in vain with the start of World War IV or also called the Khanate War(clearly comparable to the Eugenic war of 1992-1996), when the Great Khan emerge to conquest directly the radioactive world, while his reign his defeated by a Chinese coalition who develop a chemical weapon against the Augmented and Khan himself is killed in last nuclear explosition on Earth on the city of Darwin, overall over 102 milions additional people died, this again is followed by the Hegemon Wars or also Called World War 5 of 2010-2022 where the Chinese coalition try to impose his rule globally but it is bogged down in a series of resistance war, through compare to the other their is no use of WMD, the conflict still caused almost 57 milions. Lucklily for mankind, a damaged sub-light Andorian colony ship(who due to the overall reduce of the planet temperature, the central ship computer belived the planet to be viable for its Andorian occupier) land/crash landed near the city of Danang in Vietnam, this event caused the end of Hegemon Wars, but the Andorian instead of fighting the humans, they decided to spoke about them of their Age of Lament (The Andorian equivalewnt of World War 3) and of they step they did in order to avoid again such tragedy, while the humnas do not completely complty with their suggestion, they are enough curious to allow the formation of an united congress on Danang to study beteer the Andorian culture and theis technology, accidentaly this as the effect to de-facto united humanity effort in space exploration managing to reach the Moon in 2052, Mars in 2071 and develop its warp drive in 2081 and politically united Earth in 2150. As result of the Butterfly effect, by 2401 the Interstellar Federation of Planet(which has instead a reversed stylized tower as symbol, as a reference to the mythical Babel) with its capital in the planet of Danang, de-facto control almost all of the Alpha quadrant, incorporating at its interior even the Cardassion and the Cha'ltoy, however its rule is contested by the Romulan Star Empire which manage to conquer almost all the Beta Quadrant , including the Klingon, and the Dominion who rule over the Gamma Quadrant, the Borg have instead been already defeated in 2389, thanks to a massive coalition between the three power which however left the Delta Quadrant as a Lawless zone between the three supower

Also, there was a bit of a "What If" in one of the comics once where an alternate Curzon Dax comes through the wormhole from an alternate universe on an alternate Defiant. We see little snippets of other realities he'd visited before then, including one where DS9 is surrounded by Borg cubes. I'm guessing they'd overrun the Alpha Quadrant in that one and was probably the reality we saw a glimpse of in TNG: "Parallels".

An interesting What If storyline worth looking at is "What if Q or the Q Continuum learnt of or was aware of the other time-travelling/extra-dimensional shenanigans that occurred on the Star Trek shows?" - it would be interesting to see how the Q Continuum viewed the Prophets and their war against the equally deific Pah-Wraiths, how the Continuum would view the paradoxes concocted by the Krenim Imperium or Captain Braxton, or even how the Continuum would see the accidental time-jumps of the Narada and USS Discovery across time.

There's one thing you're overlooking with the whole Khan situation. The destruction of Ceti Alpha VI wasn't what killed most of his people and his wife, it was that Indigenous lifeform that he kept as a pet. The explosion made the atmosphere hostile, and made it impossible to farm or hunt, but Khan still would've found a way to get his revenge.

And ironically, Strange New Worlds gave us a very good "what-if" story with actual ramifications in the form of "A Quality of Mercy". Because, as the episode more or less states, "What if Pike actually avoided his fate to be in the chair?" And we certainly found out that it would lead to a very bloody outcome. Also, I feel that even if the spore drive hadn't become classified, there is still the main issue of HOW to utilize it. You'd still need something akin to a Tardigrade, and who knows how many there are out there... If they're rare, it pretty much renders the drive not worth utilizing throughout the fleet.

I am in agreement, no way that the Federation would have not develop such technology if it was possible to mass produced, heck even a small production would have huge tactical advantage, imagine a flottila of Nebula Class appearing on orbit on Romulous....no it must have been some kind of issue like they are unable to replicate such process or unable to effettive navigate through the Spore web(I think was that?) or they use of the technology had in fact huge repercussion on their galaxy like destabilizing normal warp travel or the magnetic field of Stars, etc.

The entire franchise has so many moments that they could have gone either way, you could make an entire channel devoted simply to them. Here's a few of my favorites. TOS: 1. Spock remains blind- Operation -- Annihilate!! Given the existence of the Visor, this wouldn't have been the end of his career. While not technically introduced until TNG, we do meet one blind and fully functional character in the original series, Miranda Jones from Is There in Truth No Beauty? 2. Gary Seven series is approved- Assignment: Earth. I absolutely love this episode, along with the tie-in novels written by Greg Cox and others. I know that a comic based on this was made, but can you imagine if the series existed? We could even have spinoffs by now. TNG: 1. Picard dies- The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2. I think that the glimpse of alternate realities we see in Parallels really highlights how much this would have changed things. Speaking of which. 2. Worf and Troi get romantically involved- Ethics. While this sort of feels last minute to the series, there are hints of it over the course of time. Of course, this would also likely mean Jadzia and Worf didn't meet. DS9: 1. DS9 is destroyed- Visionary. Ok, this one is unlikely. But I do think that having it take place would have been a game changer. 2. Vedek Bareil lives- Life Support. Again, this eliminates a later romance. However, given his influence; having him survive and aid the crew would have been interesting. VOY: 1. Tuvok's memories aren't returned- Riddles. The marked difference between old and new Tuvok is the heart of this episode. If the cure hadn't worked, everything after that would have been changed. 2. Unimatrix Zero returned- Unimatrix Zero, Part 2. The idea of a bunch of former Borg running around fighting for freedom with the aid of Voyager is something that should have been pursued. ENT: 1. The 4th season wasn't the last- These are the Voyages... There were a lot of interesting developments in that time, including what felt like a move towards resolution between Trip and T'Pol. Even the finale suggests that there could have been 5 more years! 2. The Xindi never attacked Earth- The Expanse. So, the entire season 3 story arc revolves around the events that take place here. However, no clue to the existence of the Xindi was evident before this. So what if season 3 went in another direction? DIS: 1. No Mirror universe- Into the Forest I Go. Let's be honest, who saw this coming? Personally, I feel that the latter half of season 1 would have been more interesting if they hadn't made this shark jump. 2. Burnham meets her future self- The Red Angel. Everything pointed towards this and it would have honestly been cooler than what we got. PIC: 1. Starfleet listened to Picard- Maps and Legends. So, I guess that Riker was more influential than his former Captain? Either way, if he'd obtained what he asked for, later events would have played out differently. 2. Hugh lived- Nepenthe. Killing off this popular character so soon after his return never made sense to me. Why not keep him on, even returning for season 2?

Discovery wasn't the only time a perfectly viable superspeed drive was created. Voyager developed the ability to reach Warp 10. So here's a scenario: Paris ferries everyone home in his W10 shuttle. The EMH, brought home in a bioneural gelpack, advises Starfleet medical on how to prevent them from becoming salamanders. Janeway reunites with Mark. Tuvok reunites with his family. Tom reunites with his dad. Harry reunites with his parents, and is hopefully assigned to a CO who will promote him. Kes and Neelix explore the Alpha Quadrant while the Maquis sneak away. And with no one around to stop her, Seska becomes Kazon Pirate Queen and unites the factions into a mighty empire. Everyone is happy! But like the spore drive, no one ever mentioned it again.

The issue with Ricker being assimilated instead of Picard is that First Contact would also have been different. Starfleets entire reason for keeping the Enterprise E away from earth during the borg attack was because they didn't want to put Picard in a situation where he had to face the borg, Ricker being the first officer and not in command would have kind of negated that sentiment and the Enterprise would have been at the battle from the beginning.
@MaxRawhide

Important correction on #1 Riker instead of Picard being Borgified. Best of Both World was specifically written as a way to a) get rid of Picard and b) be able to make Riker the new Captain. Stewart's contract (and everybody elses) ended after season 3 and thus after part 1 of BoBW. So if he hadn't renewed his contract then he would've died as Locutus and Riker would have been the new captain of the Enterprise, and he had to deal with having been unable to save Picard. Riker in the role of Picard in Best of Both Worlds is not a viable What If... Other than that, some interesting ones. Still think Yar could've remained alive because hers wasn't the only position to be filled. They also needed a chief engineer or pilot. Yar could've become the CE instead of Geordi with Worf security, or Worf could've become the new pilot. In both cases, he could've been developed.

DS9 was well beneath Picard. DS9 was for all it's political significance, a frontier outpost. Picard's experience and knowledge of Bajor was probably the reason he was the one overseeing the Federation take over of the station in the first episode and at this point would have been essentially in temporary command of the station but that was solely for the purpose of making sure the Federation position on the station was established smoothly, such as briefing Sisko on his new command. Once that is done he wouldn't stick around to command a space station which was only worthy of a lieutenant commander. Picard himself would not be wasted in such a role, he essentially had the stature and reputation of an admiral without the formal rank, they would not leave him to command a backwater space port (unless he had really pissed off Admiral Nechayev I suppose).

You should have mentioned how Playmates actually made a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Captain Jean-Luc Picard action figure in Deep Space Nine uniform, and the back of the figure card read that it was Picard from an alternate timeline where he in fact was given command of DS9, so yes they actually made the action figure for that very scenario. My favorite What If would be if Kirk had not died at the end of Generations or if Picard did but not Kirk and then Shatner returns as Kirk to command the Enterprise-E in the subsequent TNG films with the TNG crew. However my favorite What If would be if the Nexus had thrown the Enterprise-B with Kirk, Scotty, Chevok to the middle of the Dominion War in Season Six and you have Kirk commanding the Enterprise-B side-by-side with Sisko and the Defiant fighting the Dominion and Gul Dukat. I love William Shatner and he IS Star Trek for me. Sisko is my second favorite captain after Kirk, so Shatner and Avery Brooks working together would have been awesome especially during the Dominion War!

Your point about the federation cloaking device is flawed. Starfleet developed the phasing cloak despite the treaty banning them from using the technology, I think they would've made further attempts with the spore drive with the likes of section 31 being interested.
@candacen7779
3 жыл бұрын
But didn't they make it in secret? That's why Picard and company were upset. Starfleet was violating the treaty that could push everyone into a war. It's possible a spore drive has been developed and kept secret, but the phasing cloak only developed as far as it did because it was in secret.

Among the stories: What if Vulcans never got Logic?; What if Earth became xenophobic (the Earth First guys win in Enterprise); What if Starfleet weaponized the Genesis Device?; What if Khan conquered Earth?; and my personal fave: What if Soong Androids were super easy to build, and most of the plot elements of Picard (rights of artificial life, secret android colonies, Data being the father of an android culture) happened in the NG era?

Wow! Kirk v. The Borg... Well, first we don't know much about Borg tek at that time. Sure, they were busy assimilating tek in the delta quadrant. But as we saw in Voyager much of that tek was comparable to that of that of the Federation of Kirk's time. So it would have come to Kirk outbluffing or outsmarting the Borg. And that is something JTK was really good at. He would have played the Corbomite maneuver giving the Borg a good pause and probably pissing off Q. Again, JTK has plenty of experience in dealing with gods, or god-like beings. Knowing that Kirk wasn't going to play his game Q would have simply taken his ball and went home.

If Riker had been taken by the Borg, I think it would only affect First Contact in a major way. I, Borg would have probably played out similarly. Picard wouldn't have taken the hardline stance, partially negating the need for his change of heart. Descent would probably play out the same since it was more about Data's relationship with Lore. But First Contact could be different. The Battle of Sector 001 would probably end quicker because Picard would not have PTSD, so Starfleet wouldn't bench him. The Enterprise-E would still follow the Queen's Sphere back in time. From there, things get very complicated. Riker would be the one to sense the Borg were on the Enterprise. He might even make a hasty return instead of Picard. In that case, things would play out largely the same. But they get more interesting if Picard orders Riker to remain on the surface before beaming up. Picard's lack of intuitive knowledge about the Borg would hurt his chances in that situation. However, he would be more willing to listen to reason and order the self-destruct. He would have no prior knowledge of the Borg Queen. And he would not go in having as concrete a plan to rescue Data. I think the Borg Queen would not be so interested in Picard, since they wouldn't have a history, unless some other plot contrivance demanded it.

That first "What if..." Oh no! That would have been a disaster! Picard is a diplomat. Cisco, isn't. Many of the things Cisco did to preserve order and safety on the station, Picard would either never do or perhaps resort to some of those things after it was too late. Cisco's personality is far better suited to commanding a space station than Picard's. Perfect example: Soon after meeting Q, Cisco hauls off and punches him! Q is genuinely shocked! Saying Picard never hit him. Cisco just smiles and says, "I'm not Picard."
