Another fun fact: The Republican Party wanted Arthur as their candidate in the 1884 election. However as stated, Arthur knew he didn’t have much time left and denied running for another term. Despite this, Republicans still wanted him and kept trying to appease Arthur so they could make him their nominee. But after many failed attempts to change his mind, they finally decided to go for other candidates. So in some alternate universe, Arthur could’ve been the first VP to ascend to the presidency and win a term of his own. But it would also be the first and only time in history that two presidents died in office consecutively.

The Republican Party, in fact, didn't support Arthur in 1884, as his efforts at civil service reform (the Pendleton Act) angered the party bosses who preferred the spoils system. Arthur also didn't win over many reformers who thought he didn't go far enough. The only reason Arthur sought nomination was because he thought he did a decent job as president, and wasn't going to just walk away as if he were an embarassment. Thus, he ran, but Blaine received the nomination.

Wasn't Arthur the president who signed the Chinese Exclusion Act? Would be interesting to learn more about that
@RiverGenix

Correct. However, it's worth noting Arthur did not sign the act because he had anti-Chinese sentiment like most people in the country at the time. He actually, of I'm remembering correctly, believed that the Chinese immigrants did good for America. However, Congress kept introducing different versions of the act. Hayes vetoed one during his presidency and Arthur vetoed a bill that would've restricted Chinese immigration for 20 years. The bill he vetoed passed by very large margins in Congress, though not enough for a veto override. When the bill he eventually signed came to his desk, he chose to sign it so it would've been in effect for 10 years as a less restrictive law than it could've been, instead of risking having a future veto overridden, and hopefully reducing the chance of a future president potentially signing an even worse version of the act (which eventually happened anyway, unfortunately).

Thanks for the video! Glad you are doing this for each president. I think the navy help was really Chester’s only big accomplishment but he wasn’t very effective. I think he’s Jimmy Carter in the 1880s. Has some noble things and did a few nice things but overall inefficient

I found this photo on Wikimedia Commons, and it's one of my most used sources. If you go there and search "Chester Arthur Robert Lincoln" it should be the first image to pop up (sorry I can't just link it, YT won't allow that).
