That last point, that setting up and navigating a modern console is quite complicated and user-unfriendly now, was a real problem for my brother, who unfortunately suffered from schizophrenia and was unable to use them independently. He used to love just popping in a racing game like Dirt or PGR, and selecting the course he wanted and playing it, all with minimal button inputs, but when you compare that to the download process and interface of a game such as the latest Forza, for example, it's nowhere near as easy to get to your favourite bit. This left him feeling a bit marginalised, because I know he wanted to play the coolest looking modern games, but couldn't do so properly unless I was there to help. Simplicity can often be a real virtue when it comes to something that's meant to be pure entertainment.

The easiest way to get rid of stickdrift is for the software to implement deadzone settings. Sony/MS should just have deadzone settings in the OS (instead of just on their pro controllers) and it would sort out 99% of issues
@rob2257

Hall effect joysticks seem like a good option too. Gulikit makes replacement modules for some controllers, I believe Joy cons and Steam Deck for one. Big dead zones compensate for: wear, lower quality (which is sometimes required to hit an affordable price point, no point in tolerancing a peripheral to Bugatti or aerospace specs), and the unfortunate reality of nothing in life ever being actually perfect in the sense of completely free from any defect on all levels. LTT has some interesting videos on hall effect joysticks, they're basically magnets interacting with stationary electrical sensors but your axes supporting the stick will wear eventually. Again, you could use over specced bearings, and just go overkill and overbuild until real world stresses were irrelevant but it'd be expensive. Tangentially related, hall effect sensors are most likely used by your car for things such as: camshaft and crankshaft timing, traction control, and anti-lock brake sensors.

A lot of great points. I’ve been gaming since around ‘91 (about 6 console generations) and one thing I’ve noticed in relation to point number 1 in this video is that games crashing seems like a much more relevant problem with games nowadays in contrast to previous console generations…

Right? I was first introduced to gaming with the 360 in 2012. I was a late bloomer, but nonetheless. My 360 rarely crashed on a game. It happened, but most the time it ran fine even on heavy loads. My xbox i got later never crashed. Even though by now the thermal paste is concrete and it's had a long life, it never so much as dropped a frame. However the xbox one..man what a mess. I own around 40 or 50 games for it, and only subnautica has not crashed at least once. Fallout, assassin's creed, even Hue have all crashed. it's to do with the size and quality of the games nowadays compared to older games, the older games took up a lot less space and were worse quality, this is due to how they make the games using 60FPS and 4k resolution a prime example of this is how the original final fantasy 7 game only took up around 2gb but the remake took up 100gb.

Touch pad on the ps controller is what I miss the most when I’m playing on Xbox. You could use it for typing really fast once you got used too it. That hasn't been an issue for me since the Xbox 360 days. I had the Xbox that had swappable external hard drives, so I had three of them. The 4Gig that came woth it, and 250Gig and a 500Gig. More than enough for me. (I only had like 10 games for the PS3, so save space wasn't an issue there.) For both last generation and current-gen, I have 16TB of space. And 8TB HD, a 4TB HD, a 1TB SSD, a 2TB SSD, and the 1TB that comes with the console. All for the Xbox Series X. I keep all games that are either non-Seroes X games OR games I am either done with or aren't ready to play yet on the HDs. And the games that are either Series X or games I am currently playing either on the internal SSD or one of the external SSDs. Because I can move games between the two extremely quickly. For PS5, I just have an external 2TB SSD for now. I have a feeling that this PlayStation generation is going to be better than the last generation, so I will likely have more games to play this time around. So I should be set after I get and install a 2TB SSD for the internal slot as well. I needed less than 1TB of space last generation, so I figure 5TB of space for the PS5 should suffice. If I am wrong, I'll get another external as needed. Since I get all of my external hard drives and solid state drives on sales, expanding space isn't really an issue for me. 🤷🏾♂️

I was honestly surprised when I upgraded to an Xbox one after 360, doing little research, and finding out that master chief collection needed to not only be installed but download a like an ungodly sized patch especially for 2016. My internet wasn’t great at the time and it literally finished in the middle of the night, which I couldn’t enjoy because I had to go to bed early for work the next day. It’s kind of a sour memory. I get why it’s better to load larger games off a hard drive but I came from a world where you buy the game, put it in and play. It turned gaming away from an impulse affair, which I loved, grew up renting and borrowing games from friends, into something that sort of had to be planned out in advance. I think that’s why I like the switch so much. You go to store, buy cart, and play, with some exceptions for games that cheap out and make you download content. And the downloads tend to not be huge anyways. It’s the last console that still feels like a “console” to me.

Stick drift is the biggest annoyance because it could be mitigated by simply putting a more expensive joystick component in. Number 5 with the console exclusivity could piggy back ride on the paid subscription topic too. You gotta buy a console, buy the game, AND pay for online access. If you're new and want to start gaming, depending on the game and console, that price range is anywhere from $460 to $600 just to play 1 game. Those price range are from the PS5 and Xbox Series + game and subscription. Could be even more if you try your luck with scalpers. I love the whole free to play means free to play thing xbox finally did. The struggles of running out of Gold on 360 was tough. I am a regular PlayStation user who used to get each major new console (not the updated version of the same generation) eventually, like sometimes a whole year after initial release. The one thing that isn't on the list though is not the fact that old games don't work on the newer ones, but that new games often force you to buy the new and often extremely pricey console. Now i realize that games getting more graphical complexity can make them impossible to work on older generation, especially when you say compare the PS2 graphics with that of the PS3 or PS4. But the simplicity of just upgrading your PC with better hardware and thus being able to play more modern games is a huge plus. Now i do realize the hard-drive space upgrade was a point in this video, but lets be honest, it can easily be extended to also include updating basically any hardware problem of a console generation. I still love to play on consoles, and although i don't have a PS5 yet, i do hope to own one in the future. But knowing my luck, i will finally buy one 1 year before PS6 rolls out :D

Plenty of these are reasons I chose to get into PC gaming. No online pass required. No issues with backwards compatibility. Ease and lower cost of upgrading storage. The ability to upgrade performance by swapping one component. The ability to install quieter fans (or even water cooling for even quieter operation). Not a part of my initial decision but I'm so glad PC has access to mods, I've had so much fun playing with mods in Fallout 4 (and with console commands, too) On the other hand, I would argue the issues with controllers (drift and battery issues) do apply to PC as well, since there are games that just don't work that well playing mouse and keyboard, (for instance, driving games) since keyboard keys are either full on or full off, so if you're trying to accelerate, you're just flooring it or taking your foot off the gas.

Many games needed a tweak and even then would crash. Regarding control drift - even keyboards can have issues - I had a Logitech Carbon G512 and had to take it back to the store due to some keys that randomly decided not to work anymore. But the idea is, once the batteries are worn down and don't hold a charge. What do you do? Replace the batteries, and you are good to go. On the PS4/5? Replace the controller. And if the NES controller used non-user replaceable batteries, we would have a MASSIVE issue with those controllers not working unless you crack it open, and replace the battery. That is how I see it.

You can change the battery on PS4/5, you just have to take it apart a little bit. Granted, it's not as easy as Xbox but again, you don't change battery very often so who cares

I think 8bitdo's Pro line of controllers handles charging best: They come with a researchable battery, and it lasts a good amount of time. Charging the battery is pretty standard - just plug in the included USB-C cable. If you're really in a pinch and want to keep going without waiting for the battery to charge, the battery compartment can take standard AA batteries as well. Wouldn't be surprised if you could just use it as a wired controller by keeping the cable plugged in, but never tried it like that. Outside of some crazy technology that hasn't been invented yet, I don't think it can really be improved beyond that.

I think there are some real pros and cons to console exclusives. Many of the best games ever made are console exclusives, specifically PS4 exclusives. I've listened to GDC talks about God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima and a common thread I've noticed is they get playtested to perfection. I don't think you can do that without a big old budget from Papa Sony. Also focusing on one console saves time and thus, money. Could be a bunch of lies but CDPR claimed that the fact that cyberpunk was releasing on everything under the Sun slowed them down.

I always believed 3rd party games suffered due to so many platforms - then there's game complexity if they add MP/coop. Lots of new ways to code come out too - The worst thing was most of it was FREE to use back then so I made nothing for it other than side jobs from people asking me to make something custom. On the topic of storage, the way Microsoft handled it was great with the memory/expansion cards because of how easy and that having multiple of them wouldn't be a pain, but they are to use but damn they cost so much and Sony's one is the cheaper option but changing them out would be a pain if you had multiple of them.

@ryanjohndavies4092

@@Gendor64 I'm just saying it's an issue in comparison to the Xbox version. I imagine there are people who may store certain games on certain hard drives for example I would store all my party games on one hard drive so I can bring that to a friends house to easily play them. On Xbox that would be easier and less of a hassle but on PS5 it's slightly more of an issue.
@Gendor64

@@ryanjohndavies4092 you'd need to have your account on the friends device first tho. And while it is like 10 seconds of extra work compared to xbox's solution it's still pretty quick and easy. Plus at least for now you wouldn't be able to use the propriety xbox storage should you ever switch to pc, so sony's approach is better from a future reuse standpoint (although ms did say they want their storage to be usable on pc eventually, which it better at that price)

My biggest problem with console controllers is that you have to buy an expensive controller if you're gonna play competitively. Like a controller with back paddles so that you can aim while shooting and jumping/crouching. And for PS5 you currently have to buy from them a third party company. And THEN they eventually end up drifting.

I've had the analog plastic break, but never drift (aside from a knockff controller that doesn't seem to have a spring) on my PS2. Seeing all the drift comments, it is either something with new controllers (aking to mice double clicking/scroll issues) or how people use the analog sticks. I for example didn't "kick" the analog. Always kept it under my finger and brought it back manually. I didn't rely on the analog to bring the stick back. It was painful to see my friends torture the poor controller.
