Ok, James! I’m so into greens! Just got my copy of “Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening”. Written by Peter Burke/Vermont gardener. Growing greens without grow lights, in very small trays filled with compost/kelp additive. Incredibly easy for daily salads. I’ll let you know how it works in addition to my newly established cut flower stand! I’m collecting neighborhood pumpkins to add to my compost right now. A neighbor brought over a wagon full yesterday. Yes!!!! 🥬🎃💃🏼🎃🥬 Carolyn/Vermont Cat Lady Love your “people gotta eat”…I’m connecting with some affordable housing seniors to broaden their food horizons. Funny thing is…I’m way older than they are! And they are so intimidated by the “rules”. I’m originally from San Diego/retired Montessori teacher and soooo into not being told what to do!!!! 🌺💃🏼🌺

James, I'm on a gardening adventure in zone 7, Southern Middle Tennessee. I worked on preparing containers this past week. It's been really warm and it looks like it could continue for a little longer. I bring in a few pepper plants to over winter. I am so glad that I learned how to save them. It gives me a great head start. I purchased some sad plants yesterday. I asked for a discount because they looked so bad. Ask and you shall receive. It worked.🙂 I got collards, chives, red romaine, and cabbage. I will put the lettuce and chives in pots and keep in my sunroom. I'm wondering about feeding fall and winter veggies. Can you give any advice on this? Thanks so much to you and Tuck ❤️❤️❤️❤️.

Only a very light frost where I lost a few tomatoes that were in the low patches of the garden. The summer veggies in pots I brought into the greenhouse so they are all good. And the summer annuals In beds I covered so they are ok. I live down the street from a bay, and I am 10-15 mins from the ocean, so I think those thermal masses help to regulate my local temperature a bit.

Yeah it’s a great year for weather! I had some personal issues though and was out for 5 weeks, so things are a lot further behind than I was hoping. I had a number of videos banked so I used those to fill the gap, but it put me far behind at this time of year. Are you close to the coast or inland?
@TheMillennialGardener
Жыл бұрын
@@jamesprigioni oh no, I hope you’re alright. Hopefully nothing major? I am 9 miles from the ocean as the crow flies, but the way the roads and barrier islands are laid out it takes me 35 mins to get to the beach. Despite being near the ocean, my property is up against a low lying cold swamp, so I’m in a cold microclimate. I’m usually 3-5 degrees colder than in-town. It helps during the summer, but it kills me in the winter.

@ajb.822
Жыл бұрын
Just an idea to help you choose, especially as everyone's taste is different, is to find organic or less-sprayed orchards near you, and go get one of every kind of apple they sell, to taste them. Of course, this time of year you won't be able to get any of the ones which ripened earlier in summer, but many fall ones are still available, many of which are great storage apples, keeping in a cellar or fridge drawer for many months, and some of those ( if not all... ? ) sweeten some as they age, too. Anyways, trying as many as you can, may help you decide ! Also, look up the varieties that your local nurseries sell and read the descriptions.

Another commentor above mentioned a book on indoor salad growing and what they're doing. Also, micro greens r a big thing, although they need lights I think. Sprouting is something usually easy and not needing grow lights. Personally, I would focus on eating more seasonally, relying on fermented and dehydrated foods for max nutrition benefit, on top of frozen and canned foods, and some sprouting, during the winter months. But oh yeah, you're still without land in the summer... . I would grow in pots by a E, S or W window and look into renting a community garden plot near you &/or a yard, which can be borrowed or bartered for. There's a website, I forget the name, connecting those with yards, tools or etc. to share or rent, with those in need of them. Rob Greenfield's vlogs from a couple years ago show what can be done on a little, borrowed yard. Jim Kovaleski's urban yard FL gardens aren't his own property I think, and see what he does there ( he is there like full time all season ), and Curtis Stone's urban gardening content is all about what one can do with rented urban yards.

Thanks to you & Tuck ❤️❤️❤️I’ve built 2 large raised vegetable beds last month. One 4’ x 16’ in the middle of my side yard. Transplanted rhubarb & strawberries that I had in pots this summer into that. Then another 3’ x about 40’ along a west facing fence. Planning on doing vine crops there. I need to research the best trellis for the fence this winter. Any suggestions? Preferably low cost. Got them filled with cardboard, peat moss, dirt & homemade compost. KZitem helped me assemble the bagging attachment for my lawn mower a couple of days ago. I got 🍁 leaves chopped & top dressed the beds. Looking forward to starting vegetable growing in the spring. Compost bin is full. 2 garbage bags of leaves ready to make leaf mould & neighbor dropped off 4 more bags of leaves this week. ❄️ winter, the planning and dreaming season is almost here. Wow, so sorry. Is it the chard, or any green high in oxalates ? Something to clarify, and for all of us watch out for with the modern trend of eating these greens raw in salads vrs. the old way of usually cooking them. Cooking them neutralizes ? it ( it does leach out into the water, which I then never save for soups ), so, I don't eat much spinach or chard or etc. raw.

All premier kale Russian red kale, carrots, garlic and about 50% of curly kale can live through our zone 6 winter without any protection outdoors. The edible chickweed is also very good, can be left growing freely in the garden and harvest when you need them. White and black radish, also kore cabbage and baby bok choy is cold hardy at least to almost -10C here. Personally, I think all gardeners should keep some edible weed, just in case and increase the bees' diet.

It is grown in vast quantities here in winter and spring and is the go to salad vegetable.
