Quartzmon's reveal in Young Hunters would've made a good honorable mention. The way it violently distorts and rips apart it's Astamon shell, writhes about with fittingly disgusting noises that sound similar to bones snapping, and then mouth-goatse's the audience with the digimon it ate seemingly still alive and squirming amongst each other inside of it fascinated me after first seeing it.

In Digimon Season 02 the second to last episode will forever haunt me. The way Malomyotismon punishes Archnemon, for like no reason other than to scare the digidestined. Then kills her and then proceed to kill mummymon. I actually felt sad for them, they weren't really that big of villain's more like comic relief and they died so gruesomely .

Another good honorary mention is Apocalymon. The body horror along with its shattering true monologue (not the English one) before seemingly defeating the gang effortlessly was peak horror prior to Tamers. 02 had its moments, that's for certain. But being confronted like this, after Mimi had her breakdown at the start of the Dark Masters arc, and then Izzy being shot down when he tried to rationalise it was something else. You can see it in the kids' faces. They do not know how to respond while also having a single question: "What have we done?" They defeat Apocalymon not least of all out of self-defence and after realising that they never needed the Sigils as they were only representative of their hearts, but this bone-chill will always stay with me.

I never really got scared with digimon, but there was some very weird and strong momments indeed. 99% of those in Tammers. But a momment that really got me was in the original adventures when the kids are inside that upside down piramid and they have to cross some kind of eletric field in the right place. And since they discovered not long ago they are data in the internet Tai is like "whatever" and just go. But right after going through izzy tells him that stilll they will die for real if they die in the digital world. That takes all the courage from tai and he need to regain it. And another momment is from Universe/Appmon, a series that I love and really need more attention. In the end when the protagonist "boyfriend" reveals to be a child version of the Terminator and the villain is realized in the real world and starts throwing people into a giant blender like thing that minces them into data.

Sound-only death and seeing her leftovers all wrapped up vs seeing the pain and torture people are put thru. Love the channel-mid-time listener 😅 Two that I’d add both deal with the theme of child abduction, and while neither explicitly identify their antagonists as child predators -at least in the most common sense of the term-the overtones are immensely disturbing. First, I’m thinking of IceDevimon in Tamers, who is a thinly veiled child molester attempting to groom Rikka in his underground lair. The voice acting does a lot of the heavy lifting in conveying the horror here, and I still remember the revulsion I felt watching it on Fox as a kid when the episode aired. The second is more of a grab bag related to Oikawa Yukio in Adventure 02, who remains an object of fascination for me in the series some 22 years after the fact. I think the animators seldom get enough praise for nailing the menacing, almost demonic presence that this character needed to have for the story to work on any level. Especially in the two episodes just before the penultimate reveal of Myotismon, Oikawa appearance becomes ever more frightful, seeming to degenerate into something ghoulish not unlike Nolan would do with Heath Ledger’s Joker makeup eight years later in The Dark Knight. The initial scenes teasing Oikawa (Christmas episode) and his formal introduction in the back of a mono-color van after abducting Ken (every parent’s nightmare in the late 90s) still disturb me on re-visits, with the “scanning your barcode” scene having some horrific undertones that probably weren’t appropriate for the show in hindsight 🤷🏼♂️ Nevertheless, v good video.
@MoonLitChild

Yeah, late season Oikawa in 02 sure was something-- *especially* the way he acted around Cody and Ken, like, holy shit that creeped me out as a younger viewer. Growing up, I never really bought into "stranger danger" because I was old enough to know that you were way more likely to be abducted/abused by an older family friend or relative, but the parental paranoia around it was very real. And like, having his appearance be around Christmas, which is usually seen as a happy time but *also* having the statistics of crime being a lot higher around then had to be on purpose, since so much of everything else they do with him feels so well thought out as a villain, even before you know he's basically just a meat-puppet for Myotismon. And then there was the whole Damon thing with Ken, which felt like it came out of nowhere but *also* because they needed to do something that felt like it called back to/wrapped up the Dark Ocean plot. The idea that there was somewhere else out there, that if you mis-step you could end up there was always a freaky concept to me (especially if you were emotionally unstable like Kari, Ken and even TK. I always had a theory that the only reason TK could reach Kari in the Dark Ocean was because he had his own *plethora* of mental health issues that might have drawn him there eventually if Cody wasn't there to balance him out)

@@union4everdixienever I have a feeling that Tri was meant to be a full season/series. There are only so many reasons the specific character arcs were so thought out and everything else felt rushed-- and I think *part* of that expanded story would have explored the connection between The Dark Ocean and Homeostasis-- the chant that young Himekawa says in her flashback begins: "Darkness flees North to the ocean...." and seems to imply that the Digital World and the Dark Ocean are intrinsically connected. Himekawa tries to reach her partner and ends up there, the same was Kari and Ken do in 02.

Gammamon nearly lost Hiro that night and was going berserk against the red Oboromon to get Hiro back to where he eventually snapped and turned into Gulus again and crushed the red Oboromon and leaving the remaining four to run for their lives.

I think there were a few darker/more messed up moments in Ghost game, eventhough the ones in this video were already pretty dark. Ep 46: The Queens Banquet. That scene where Heros friend get's attacked by Oleamon's vines in the bathroom looked like a reference to tentacle hen*ais. It's even worse knowing that all the characters are underaged. That episode was hard to watch and really uncomfortable. Ep 48: The White Bride: Shamblemon infect humans with mushrooms that grow our of their body which they then violently rip out and eat. This was again really hard to watch. Ep 32: Who are you? Gammamon get's replaced by Betsumon, and his friends don't recognize it anymore. Watching Gammamon desperately trying to make Hiro remembering it was heartbreaking. Also the whole dialog between Meiccomon and Gammamon, and Meiccomon dissapearing in the end was pretty dark to me.

I’m in shock you didn’t use the episode when Matt and Tai literally was on the break off death and Greymon dark Digimon + traumatizing TK in adventure 2020. I was so shocked

That was more intense than scary to me-- but the body horror of Tai himself being slowly... rusted? eaten alive? by the miasma sure was something.

Devimon and Myotismon, as the og archvillains should be somewhere in this list! I'm also haunted by the scene where Puppetmon straight up KOs Cherrymon with one blow. There was always something unsettling about the idea of permadeath in this series..

Well, we have a new all-around scariest Digimon episode now. Here I thought Chamblemon's episode was bad, but even that one didn't have borderline necrophilia in it/regularly show a corpse. (Even Tri didn't get that honor, tho Daigo's death was bloodier. We still never saw his body iirc.) Literally balls to the wall insane episode.

You think the dub version of Kiri's venture to the dark ocean was creepy I would say the sub was worse considering what those monsters wanted with her in the original.

I grew up with watching Turkish dub, which is pretty much Japanese uncensored version with Turkish dialog on it. And that last episode with Apocalymon clawing his own flesh and blood dripping down... Bruh... 6 year old me got really scared.

And also the way he mentions and references through real life extinction stuff was also dreary. Turkish dialog and the way his VA sounded kinda made it scarier for me. Turkish dub was dogshit btw, badly translated mess however sometimes it felt like different people were translating it and sometimes VAs actually put effort. Digimon's dub was probably really really low budget stuff although the VAs are prolific and were well known VAs.

I would say the 20 episode is pretty dark and good too. We see how two Digimon only wanted to save the human but because he heard the voices of his relatives he stepped out of the fire even though the Digimon warned him and see how he turns into ash. Not only is he dead but how he screamed and the reactions from his relatives Was pretty good. Blamed as Murderers even tough they wanted to save him is pretty hard and unfair too. Another good Episode who we are certain that two Humans died and dont come back is with Rareraremon altough those two deserved it somewhat because they brought the whole Town in danger only because they throw Trash into the Woods. They got digested from Rareraremon and the only Leftovers are their Bones. Also not as dark as the others but also brutal is how Oboromon stabbed Hiro.

Digimon Ghost Game kinda a bit inconsistent with the horror that sometimes, it's serious that people actually die but most of the time somehow the villain just go buddy-buddy at the end and everyone are fine. And the thing is when people do die they don't make a whole big deal out of it? And was kinda surprised when Piedmon appear and he's actually nice enough to not cheat and honor the game
