chudatown in so many ways. A lot of what he says is oriented or not saying the whole truth or just plain anecdotal generalization or has a completely flawed reasoning behind it. The most obvious is trying to make you believe far is more fattening because it contains 9 calories per great instead of 4 for carbs or proteins. What he fails to mention is that fat has almost no impact on insulin levels contrary to carbs and proteins, which means they don't cause you to overeat, in fact they are extremely satiating. Also who cares if fats deliver more energy gram? So you think your body counts grams to determine whether it needs to eat again after a meal? No it registers calorie deficits, not gram deficits. Taking more of the non caloric fibers has no impact on your calorie intake, your body works with the same amount of calories every day. What matters for fat storage however is the amount of carbs you take to yourself. Also he apparently has never heard of carb binging and seems to think what is addictive in the pizza is the cheese without realizing carbs are what makes you hungry again. Chocolate and sugar make you addicted. Cheese is not even comparable. Also in one of his videos he tries to scare away people from animal fat sources by misleading people to believe the fats once digested will have the same solidified form as before consumption. Fat deposits in the body are stored as proteins (cholesterol is a lipo protein) and the reason for the hardening is amalgamation with calcium. It has nothing to do with the pre digested fat texture. Also in the diet comparison study he quoted he forgot to mention that the alkohol consumption in each group was what was driving the correlation with diabetes, not the ratios of plant vs animal sources. Then he gives the anecdotal evidence of the autopsy but just because someone who eats fats had bad arteries doesn't mean the state of his arteries are the result of fat. We know today that fats don't increase atherosclerosis, they are only a consequence of inflammation, not the cause. Cholesterol is a repair protein for your arteries, the clogging only happens when too much damage happens as a result of elevated blood sugar because too much cholesterol is brought to the arteries to repair inflamed tissue and micro lesions. I could go on for ages but I think you get the drill. Barnard is an activist and lobbyist, everything he says is oriented and has an agenda. Everyone who has done a high fat diet can tell you that in the absence of excess carbs you will loose a lot of fat, weight, have improved libido and testosterone levels (in men), improved skin and eye vision (because of the fat soluble vitamins) and reduced insulin resistance and cholesterol. Barnard is so obsessed with the evils of meat that he confuses animal fat with animal proteins, which in excess do lead to a high insulin response, just like carbs do. Everything he says can be read thought the ideological lens of a vegetarian. There are great reasons to have veggies in your diet and they have protective properties, and there is no need to slander animal food sources to praise their benefits. In diets with high animal fat content, what is damaging is not only the excess protein (rather than fat) but also the absence of vegetal food sources, which have antioxidants, electrolytes and other minerals, together with vitamins and a host of other protective other compounds. Both the cattle and farming industries are highly industrial and come with a host of issues, be it artificial hormones, pesticides, phosphates, medicine contamination. Debates that seek to put the finger on those because of industrial practices are pointless. The issue in diets is a function of deficiencies and using non organic sources more than needing to go all out on a specific type of food. Humans have enzymes to break down any type of food including fats and animal proteins, the fact that our intestinal tract looks similar to that of apes doesn't make us vegetarians, he acts as if digestion and absorption were purely physiological process, not an enzymatic or bacterial one. In short, his entire argumentation is dishonest at best.

So what's if you are right and you are open minded for new information? What's if you are wrong and you are close minded for new information? And if nothing else, calling Dr. Bernard an ignorant without adressing the mistakes he made is just a logical fallacy and an invalid argument.

They just keep eating themselfs sick. They remove potatoes from their diet and add more fat and cholesterol to their diet insted. Neil Barnard is very respected lifestyle medicine doctor focusing on improvement of diet to correct, stop and even reverse some degenerative diseases commonly seen in middle age and elderly people eating the standard American diet. Sadly, this diet is being increasingly eaten in all modern countries. I went whole food-plant based about 4 years ago to fix serum cholesterol, which is a warning marker for heart disease risk. It dropped from 210 mg/dl (high being above 200) to 125 mg/dl (ideal-below 150 is ideal, some believe). It has stayed down as has my weight. I feel good being so much less weight! I don't breath heavy after just a short time walking, or walking stairs. It's the weight my body is expected to be so the knees and joints, and the oxygen from breathing can handle it. One of the biggest things is this improved feeling; it is very easy to take for granted because we become very accustomed to our situation.

I dont like the 11th myth, it makes people think that non-organic produce is poisonous. My sister wont let her children eat strawberries because she heard they usually contain pesticides. And she rinses off all her produce because she is afraid of chemicals. That fear leads her to avoid produce. She doesnt have that fear when she looks at cheetos or hamburger, so she buys that stuff instead. Also, organic can be much more expensive, which can discourage someone trying to adopt a vegan diet. I also agree with T Colin Campbell, we need to stop focusing on individual vitamins or nutrients. Heck, people arent suffering from nutritional deficiencies, people are sick from eating bad stuff, from excess. When is the last time you saw someone with a nutritional deficiency?
@LutherAEvans

Pointing out that organic produce is better than produce that has been sprayed with toxic chemicals is not an endorsement of Cheetos and hamburger. Just because your sister isn't the brightest in her decision making, doesn't mean the myth should be dismissed. There's truth in what Dr. Barnard said.

eric yam Most GMOs are free of unhealthy pesticides. GMO fruits and vegetables are created because they are used to keep pests away. The non GMO fruits and vegetables are sprayed with unhealthy toxic pesticides and herbicides every week or every day. Using Organic method causes more of the crop to be thrown away because Organic plants are more easily infected with pests or fungi. That is why some Organic fruits are very expensive because most of their yield gets thrown away. Millions farmers in poor countries depend on GMO because they save 90 to 100 percent of their crop and they don't use as much pesticides because the GMO keeps the pest away. In world with 7 billion people we cannot afford to throw away our food because of pest or fungal infection. The world won't survive with Organic. Most the world survives from GMO food. I depend of GMO Food because where I live we cannot afford to grow organic because we have drought and floods and pests and these kills most of crops. GMO foods have exist since 1950 and GMO reduce starvation.

Resveratrol from the red pigment and grape skin. OMG, just eat grapes or drink grape juice! The grape skin specifically is what we are talking about. The French paradox comes from how the French live ad eat in the country compared to how the USA lives and eats anywhere in their country with the exception of perhaps the Amish. Morticia147 Me too. My doctors told me to get on a low carb diet because of my blood sugar. Doing great now. This guy criminally neglects to point out that what is dangerous is eating carbs AND fats in a diet. That's what can make you fat, sometimes dangerously so if you don't exercise enough. Either you avoid carbs and your body shifts to ketosis, metabolizing stored fats(rather than sugar) for energy thus lowering and normalizing blood sugar levels, or you avoid ALL fats and meats to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Morticia147 obviously it's down since no sugar is entering your blood, the issue is that the sugar cannot enter your cells. A low carb doesn't solve the underlying issue.

He constantly is cautioning about dietary fat. If you want to go into Ketosis (nutritional starvation) you have to limit carbs AND protein or the body will make carbs from some of the amino acids in your dietary protein and you won't convert fat to ketone bodies in any quantity. Intermittent fasting is a good idea, as is limiting all foods after dinner - your body burns more fat for energy when sleeping if there is less circulating glucose. Ketogenic diets are better than meds, but have similar effect and outcome - there is not nor has there ever been any indigenous peoples who lived in a state of Ketosis as a normal operation of their metabolism, including the Inuit. In fact they were proven to be exceptionally resistant.

calories are only half the story. How does the fat get stored? into fat cells? I can understand how sugar turns into fat, and how calories can be stored as fat when overeaten. However, in the case where fat is stored - no matter where the fat comes from, there needs to be insulin to open the cells to store the fat. SO how does that happen if you eat pure fat ? insulin barely turned on when there is just fat as a macronutrient. However, insulin is activated if you eat anything with sugar..or anything that breaks down into glucose. So insulin then opens up the cells and lets the sugar in, taking it away from the blood vessels. However, it also tells the body to store fat. ........................this is important. IT TELLS THE BODY TO STORE FAT. remember that insulin resistance issue..the intramyocellular fat that vegans like to say causes diabetes....this intramyocellular fat, could not get there, without insulin. Well, if insulin is what made the fat go into the cell, how did the insulin get turned on?................sugar.glucose. amino acids. But here's the kicker, glucose can be converted to fat, however, amino acids are used for protein building. so this is the problem. the intramyocellular fat----it got there from the excess glucose. NOT from excess fat.

and no: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_index look up beef. the study dr. gregor quotes, is looking at processed meat. Like processed carbs - this "processing" is not healthy in either type of diet. However, real unprocessed organic, free range beef, does not have that issue. people have eaten that stuff for years. Problem - was the processed flour based bun, and eventually the processed meat as well. Also, yes if beef raised your insulin levels - which I believe it should to some degree, amino acids (protein from animals) don't convert to fat. They are amino acids. but glucose in excess can covert to fat. the body only likes to keep 4-7mmol/L of sugar at any given time. 1 slice of bread has more sugar than that!!! Again, question is, how does the fat get into the cells and block the insulin receptor? animal products break down into fatty acids, and amino acids. the fatty acids are used for various processes in the body from making hormones to cell walls, to helping certain vitamins get absorbed. and the amino acids can be used for building muscle amongst other things, including making glucose in a low glucose state. However, what in the world happens when you eat too much glucose...? too much readily available glucose? .....as far as I understand basic biochemistry, it gets converted into fat and is stored - again cause it CANNOT float around in the blood - or the constant hyperglycemia, will lead to breakdown of arterial walls - and further increase inflammatory responses. Usually leading to metabolic dysfunction. so no....I don't get how eating sugar is equivalent to eating beef.

rtype1309 You rock and your information agrees with cutting edge HARD SCIENTIFIC FACTS. We seem to be living in an age where people are content with sacrificing their health to save the animals because most people enjoy grassfed pastured meats when they're not being guilted that they are part of some global cruelty and that they should abstain from meat in hopes of reducing that cruelty. The human diet has never been more upside down than now and it's time we get back to what has kept us running like well oiled machines for millions of years. We have GOT to eliminate the conventionally farmed meat products. THAT'S where we are being compromised. If people ate the way we did even 200 years ago we'd see a massive reduction in inflammation which leads to all sickness. Keep preaching the facts!!! 👊🏻🙌🏼
@user-sp9hp1tj7v

Yeah dude take a look at that chart on wikipedia, beef releases more insulin than white pasta, I think white pasta counts as processed food. You seem to not really know much biochemistry. To store energy from carbs, glucose is converted into glycogen, basically long chains of glucose that are stored in the muscles and liver and are easily utilized during physical activity. Your body can store several pounds of glycogen at any given time. Only when all the glycogen stores in the liver and muscles are completely full will the body start converting sugar to fat in a process called de novo lipogenesis, and even then the process is very inefficient. The only way they would get full is if you go very long periods without physical activities or eat shit loads of processed sugar. Fat, on the other hand, is very easily stored in your body without undergoing any chemical changes. So ultimately the best approach is to avoid foods high in fat (oils and animal products) as well as processed sugar/white flour and focus on eating whole plant food which are low-calorie density and anti-inflammatory.

NO SUGAR is the number one thing. Carbs are converted straight to sugars and stored as fat as well as a short energy spike.But it sends your insulin through the roof and there it can stay damaging all the body systems. Fat does not spike any insulin and therefore is a better food to lose weight .. Calories do not count it is where it is absorbed that counts. Straight to adipose tissue is the way the body fat builds.

Graham Dawes sorry graham. don't take this personal but the science has been updated and it's more reliable than ever. overwhelmingly, the root cause of type 2 diabetes is a diet high in fats and animal produce. people can still enjoy meat, dairy and eggs as long as they are served as little treats on the side. like condiments. any isolated, separated, purified fat will block the action of insulin. the pancreas will try to compensate for this inefficiency by overproducing and exhausting itself.

Sorry indeed, that you have got it totally wrong, All our research leads to the carbohydrate diet which follows Keyes theories are so wrong as to be almost criminal, The vested interests of the big food corporations, keep bringing it forwards. These interests are huge and it is the $$$ that is important. Our research is very sound and is fundamentally different from the rote that has been put forwards for 50 years. The so called high carb diet and low fat is the invention of the Corn Syrup interests, replace fat with a load of sugar and kill off the population with diabetes type 2 and heart disease. If the so called guidelines are followed then the Metabolic Syndrome , will cause the huge increase of obesity and diabetic disease to continue at the present rate times 2. If you want then follow the present guidelines and follow the rest over the cliff, just remember the guidelines are being pushed by vested interest.

It would take a long time to summarise the processes involved but just put it down that FAT does not trigger any more than a tiny response from INSULIN Animal PROTEIN does get a larger one but Carbohydrates trigger a huge response and a high insulin that goes on for hours, in a insulin resistant person. This is the dangerous high level that tries to dump the sugars into muscle and adipose tissue which are already to full of it. If you would like a presentation about the mechanisms of insulin resistance then a good explanation would be that from Ivor Cummins, on KZitem The one that might explain it to you simply is the Cholesterol Conundrum. Look at that and it might explain it in layman's terms for you . I take it from your answers that you must be a vegan and all the prejudiced views that we get from them about animals etc. Eat nuts as much as you like but it is a hard way to go. Not wrong but hard.

We are talking about complex carbohydrates here. No one is defending corn syrup. Complex carbohydrates with low gi do not cause the same insulin spike as processed sugars. Even the America Diabetes Association (ADA) advises consuming whole-grains. And still Botha is right about what she says. A diet heavy in fats is the main culprit for T2 diabetes. Look up Walter Kempner's research where he literally put his patients on a white rice diet and their diabetes was reversed. I am not advocating consuming enriched white rice but, this shows that carbohydrates, even refined ones are not the culprits for T2 diabetes. T2 diabetes is caused by accumulation of fats inside the muscle cells (intramayocellular lipid) and that is what interferes with insulin from allowing it to transport the glucose inside the cell. Now this can happen on a plant based diet as well but, one would have to really over do their calories that their body would create this much fat on mainly high carbohydrate low fat diet. On a typical western diet animal fat and refined vegetable oils are stables in american plates. Asian cultures like the Japanese, or unprivileged parts in China (where they mostly rely on plants for food) eat plenty of refined white rice and they have way lower rates of diabetes compared to their counterparts westernized cities.
