Mr. Davis... I'm a 47 year old former drummer. I played dince the age of 5 and even did some teaching for a while durjng the early 2000's. I moved to a new home 7 years ago where there's not much chance of teaching drum lessons, so I never unpacked my kits. My father was a drummer and loved jazz. Unfortunately, at the time as a young boy, i had no appreciation for jazz. When he died in 2021, he left me his 1960's Gretsch Round Badge kit. So, two days ago, I came across your channel, and I am now super motivated to play jazz. Such a wonderful sound and feel to me now. I have got the Gretsch out and tuned and have started watching your videos. I appreciate the time, energy, and true skill you share. I have subscribed.

Absolutely fabulous stuff here Q. I have to add, for anyone adventurous enough, once you can slay those Brazilian grooves, the next step is to check out the Brazilian masters like Edu Ribiero, Isac Jamba, Rafael Barata and others. The authentic Brazilian Samba uses a fast straight-eighth right hand and these guys do not use push-pull or finger control. It's all wrist and I have concluded that it's (just like all other Latin influenced techniques) mostly a cultural thing these guys grew up with. We gringos have kind of relaxed some of these things to make it easier for those of us used to spang-a-lang to make these things happen when playing those fast Jobim tunes we are often called to play. There are some guys out there like Jeff Hamilton who employ push-pull quite effectively in both hands when playing Sambas so that can be something that those of us from North of the border can employ. But check these guys out. Their concept of Jazz Samba is seriously different and they employ all the authentic rhythmic structures that go way beyond what we typically scratch the surface of. Actually, you can go really deep into all of these grooves if you are curious enough. The problem I've found, is that there are only so many hours in a day and just exploring all of the things you can do with spang-a-lang can be a full-time endeavor. But man, getting all 10 of these down is really a great start in having the necessary tools to start exploring all of these feels. Thanks, Q, you da man!

@drumqtips

Hey Malek! Yes you could say that and in its most basic form, a samba is a sped up bossa nova however the music itself is very different. Good to hear from you my man.

Hey there Q, great video as always. It seems that finding good examples of songo music isn't so easy... At least for me. I love the kind of funky and syncopated songo groove that you played. Could you please give me some examples of songo style songs to listen to?

Thank you very much - nice lesson! Regarding the Bossa Nova - Ed Thigpen had something with swiping the brush i 8th (or 16th). Am I wrong to say that you can also play a Bossa in 3-2 and 2-3? And if - I assume that goes for most Cuban rhytms?
@drumqtips
3 күн бұрын
That’s correct but the “Brazilian Clave” is much less rigid and strict compared to the Cuban Clave which never changes once a song starts. Thanks chiming in! Always good to hear from you.

Cool stuff. Wouldn't 'My Favourite Things' be in a fast 3/4? It sounds like 1,2,3,2,2,3 etc to me Bass on the first beat and hi-hat on the second and third). 6/8 is in 2 time. Though if the 6/8 was swung you could play 1,2,3,4,5,6 - with the kick on 1 and 4 (or kick 1 hi-hat 4). It might seem the same but there's definitely a different feel. Cheers.
@rixong
3 күн бұрын
Does seem that it would be more accurate to call this groove 9/8 since I believe the second bass drum hit is swung. That said, a meter is just a meter and it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing (which you def do, Quincy). Thanks again for another great lesson.
@drumqtips
3 күн бұрын
I never thought about it honestly. No need to analyze it. It’s not a complex song or groove so no need to make it complex. Just play it with a lot of feeling and groove. But of course other songs require a little bit more of an analysis or understanding of the meter to really play affectively. Thanks for chiming in!
