Remember when Heidfeld was a freshman in F1 around 2000? He was racing in Alain Prost's team, and his teammate was Jean Alesi. They crashed into each other a few times, and since only one mistake like that is enough to be fired, Nick did not get a seat for the 2001 season by Prost. He was preceeded by last year's Minardi driver, the argentinian Gaston Mazzacane. Guess how many races did Gaston complete in Prost-Acer... Fun fact that Mazzacane's former teammate, Marc Gené later became Ferrari's 3rd driver for years, but Gaston never made it back to F1. Back to Heidfeld, it seems that Prost was proven wrong later about him.

The Enstone team have had a reputation for getting through drivers as well. Take 1994 for example, the team had Michael Schumacher, Jos Verstappen, JJ Lehto and Johnny Herbert driving the cars at some points in the season. For the most part, it was to find someone to drive the second car, whilst Schumacher was winning races and going for the title. When Schumacher was serving his 2 race ban in late 1994, neither Lehto nor Verstappen could get anywhere close to the performances Schumacher was capable of (in Monza they qualified P10 and P20 with Lehto finishing P9 and Verstappen DNFing in the race and Portugal they qualified P10 and P14 with Verstappen finishing P5 in the race and Lehto spinning out of the race). It showed the short comings of having drivers incapable of matching the lead driver of the team and was probably why Benetton lost the Constructors Championship to Williams that year

I'm surprised Heinz-Harald Frentzen being dropped from the Jordan team in 2001 isn't even an honorable mention... Other than that, this is a solid list and the number one spot is exactly the one I would have picked. Also, another honorable mention would have been the (as far as I know) only double-dump (or maybe chain-dump would be a better term) within one season: In 1994 the Benetton team dropped J. J. Lehto after the Canadian GP in favor of Jos Verstappen and Verstappen himself got dropped from the team in the same season after the Euopean GP, with Johnny Herbert replacing him for the remaining two races.

Arnoux won 3 times for Ferrari and won 7 races total. In 1984 he finished sixth in the championship, which compares well to his team mate Michele Alboreto, who finished fourth. On paper, there was no reason for his dismissal (called a mutual separation at the time). There was no speculation as to why this happened, just general silence, which always made me wonder if something which had nothing to do with his driving was at the root of it all. I wonder if there is still a story to be told.

If he had a different last name with that track record in IndyCar, he would have. The difference is he would have been in Al Unser Jr, Juan Pablo Montoya, or Rick Mears situation. JPM got the funds arranged, Al Jr couldn't buyout his new Penske contract, and Rick didn't have the 2.6 million wanted.

@@Eibarwoman Montoya was on Williams' books, he was always going to be an F1 driver. The only reason they didn't sign him up for '99 is because they already had Ralf and Zanardi signed (the latter was an miraculous disaster as there was no shortage of ability and bravery in his previous F1 career and his fabulous CART years)

Jan Magnussen demise from F1 was lack of car development experience and lack of money. Denmark is not a motorsport nation, therefore it is hard for talented drivers to find sponsors who want to cough up with serious cash. They rather sponsor a football team. 😂

I still don’t understand Lotus Renault GP’s logic behind replacing Heidfeld for the second half...that fire starting had nothing to do with Heidfeld. Maybe they should’ve replaced one of the guys that were working on the car that screwed something up which caused it to go up in flames in the race. And I bet the actual reason Bruno got the seat for the second half was only because his last name is Senna.

Is was a good thing for Jan Magnussen that he got dropped, after that, he started a WEC-career for Corvette which he has won World Championships a lot of times and won le Mans a couple of times too. That would never have happened in F1. He is in the forties now and still an active driver for Corvette . For three months ago i met him and asked him about Kevin and whether he ever would try to drive at le mans and he answered that they have talked to Haas and Corvette and they are both fine with Kevin driving some WEC races for Corvette in next season in the same car as his dad. Its all up to the dates.

Trulli was better than Alonso especially in 2004. Trulli was LEADING Alonso in points at the time of the axe after Monza. You FAIL to mention this important point. Trulli outperformed Alonso, qualifying him, winning a race (Alonso won ZERO races that year). It was all political. Flavio had a business plan to win with a Spaniard to enter a new market. Trulli was too good.

The BMW/Villeneuve story dates back before the start of the season though. Remember, when Villeneuve signed with Sauber it was way before BMW bought the team, and had signed a two year contract. When BMW rebranded the next year they did not want to have Villeneuve driving for them but could not get out of the contract, so right from the off they were looking for any way to get him out.
