Reminds me of the people I know who in the pathological sense have a problem with keeping their home and their things clean and in order: "Oh, you've found a packed of now mouldy green salami slices under my sofa? I had already wondered where it was that time three weeks ago." "Oh you tell me you've found a mouldy rest of red beans and one container in the fridge and literally unidentifiable masses of mold in two other containers? Well, I guess we really should start eating or leftovers on time." When I was in the vatican everything looked neat, but of course that was in 1999 and only the places where they let tourists go.

All interesting! However the Bible certainly does teach that Mary was a virgin: "How shall this be, since I know not a man?" being her question to the angel Gabriel on his announcement that she would give birth to a son. The commentary also appears to conflate 'being a virgin' with 'being sinless'. The New Testament states the first while not at all suggesting the second; Roman Catholics officially (now) hold to both. (I am not a Roman Catholic.)

How is that even possible? Sin came about when Adam and Eve disobeyed. The wages of sin is death. That extends all the way down to us. So how was Mary born without sin? Classic Dogma. Christ was born just like every other child that came into this world. What makes him so special is that he sacrificed himself in order for us to gain eternal life - our 2nd chance! He faced sin just like we did, and he conquered it. Just like death. He hath power to give his life and he has power to take it up again. If Mary was born without sin, then why is she dead?

I love this channel and am a relatively new subscriber, and with all due respect I bring to your attention that your complete lack of historical or even basic theological understanding of the Catholic things mentioned here are fueling and perpetuating the same misunderstandings that ignorant movies and TV shows have for decades. Even if you don’t believe in that faith, quoting accurate teachings and properly contextualizing them is central to historical and academic integrity. For one, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception has nothing to do with the Virgin birth of Christ, and everything to do with a special grace imparted upon Mary at HER conception in her mother’s womb that made her indemnified of original sin. This doesn’t mean she didn’t need a savior, and that is one dimensional thinking. This video is rife with similar errors, again, that aren’t a matter of personal belief or opinion but rather categorical fact... if you’re going to refer to things of a faith, refer accurately. It’s interesting how when people purport to be “academic” about a faith the tendency is to insert condemnation and personal bias in couched as fact. Be academic. Do your research. Again, my 2¢ and I LOOOVE this and all of your channels and will continue to subscribe... I just think you should re-examine this one.

7:29 You mentioned "enslave" You were probably reading about Inter Caetera on this page: www.nlm.nih.gov/nativevoices/timeline/171.html However, the text portion cited says nothing about enslaving anyone. I'll look up a fuller text but "all rights and dominions" means all political power, nothing against the personal freedom of anyone. It's like 1945 when the allies claimed all political power in Germany, that doesn't mean German particulars could be enslaved whenever someone wanted (at least not on the paper and barring the general enslavement of populations under Communism).

8:34 Bad journalism again ... _"the doctrine of immaculate conception, that Mary gave birth to Jesus as a virgin free from original sin"_ No, that is totally garbled. You are mixing two totally different doctrines and indeed both are also dogmas. Immaculate conception refers to the conception of the Blessed Virgin Herself : She did not inherit original sin from her two human parents, meaning, if She had died straight at birth, She would not have gone to Limbo (damnation without pain, "Hell lite"), but to the bosom of Abraham. She also had no inclination to sin and never sinned. That She was a Virgin is summed up in the other doctrine of Virginal Birth, shared by "all other Christians" as ecumenists would put it: She was virgin prior to the birth, during the birth and remained virgin after the birth. Some protestants reduce this to virginity prior to birth. Now, Limbo, that unbaptised infants go there, is not directly dogma, it is doctrine. However, it is dogma that all men are conceived with original sin, that is heading for damnation, with the two sole exceptions of Jesus and Mary.

8:47 _"even borders on idolatry"_ Bad journalism again. What was it CSL made his novel character Professor Kirke say ... _"Logic! Why don't they teach logic in these schools?"_

8:53 _"so it's surprising that Christ's virginal birth wasn't official Catholic doctrine until well into the mid-nineteenth century."_ Bathos of your journalism. Virginal birth is official dogma since apostles, since in the creed "natus ex Maria virgine". The two sides that were competing up to 1854 (or 1853?) were both agreed on it. The question was : was Mary (Herself, not Her Son) conceived without original sin, or was She conceived with it, then freed from it one second after Her conception, on praying for it? The decision was, She was actually _conceived_ without it.
@hglundahl

9:08 _"there's apparently no mention whatsoever of a virgin birth in the Bible"_ Three bloopers in one. 1) Catholicism does not accept Sola Scriptura, meaning that for us Catholics a thing does not have to be directly mentioned in the Bible to be not just true, but a compulsory truth revealed by God under pain of damnation on those denying it; 2) Immaculate conception and Virgin birth are not the same fact. They are different facts. 3) Virgin birth _is_ mentioned in the Bible. Luke 1:[26] *And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, [27] To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. ... [34] And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? [35] And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.* In other words, she was a virgin when the angel came, and the angel did not suggest that she would have normal intercourse, but said that God would do sth which made it superfluous.
@hglundahl

9:16 _"On the contrary, in Luke __1:47__ Mary adresses God as her "savior", implying that she was just as sinful as the rest of us."_ Luke 1:47 is indeed a favourite "proof text" Protestants give about Her not being conceived without sin or even not remaining without personal sin. However, the implication is not cogent, since the Immaculate Conception was a miracle by which God precisely saved Her from becoming as sinful as the rest of us. Note the text: *And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.* She does not say She ever repented or needed to repent. Also, Luke 1:28 *blessed art thou among women.* - It refers to a military victory, only two women in the Old Testament had been called so, Jael who slew Sisera, Judith who slew Holophernes. Since the Blessed Virgin had lived a peaceful life, She did not quite understand. She is pregnant when She arrives to Elisabeth, and she tells Her: Luke 1:42 *Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.* Well, this made it all a lot clearer. Here is God speaking to Satan: Genesis 3:15 *I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.* If you react to "she" shall crush, in Hebrew both woman and seed are feminine nouns and either would be referred to as "she" since Hebrew, like French, has no separate word for "it". Vulgate translates as if referring to woman. Either way, this verse (if the serpent is Satan, as is at least the basic understanding among Christians since Christianity began) has a woman and her seed defeat the serpent and its seed. Now, with the situation in Luke 1:42 the "blessed among women" becomes so much clearer. She was told she had done the basic part required of the woman. And since sin is slavery under Satan, enmities with Satan is not sinning, so, She was told, both by Gabriel the angel and by Elisabeth, the wife of a cohen, that She was this non-sinning woman who was contributing, with Her Seed, to Satan's defeat. Hence, Pius IX was perfectly right as is also evident from his patristic supports.

One interesting point about the Vatican dividing the Americas between the Spanish and Portugese was that the supposedly Catholic French completely ignored it by colonizing North America and the Caribbean extensively, starting in the early 1500s and pushing as far west as the Great Lakes and the central prairies. I don't know what the Vatican's view on that was. I suppose they didn't mind because the French sent missionaries (often Jesuits) to convert the natives along the way. The British were also sometimes-Catholic when they started their empire-building on the continent, too.

Structures that align perfectly, and are mathematically correct, with celestial bodies. In the time of Aristotle, they would have been considered “savages” and “heretics”! As men gather and think themselves knowing and important, they can only be foolish if they cannot learn from the past and hear what other points of view may be.

The civil war was economic in that the north did not want the south to undertake trade agreements on their own. The north was dependent on the south for raw materials and if those materials were traded elsewhere, at better prices than the north was giving, that would put the north in an economic bind. Presenting misconceptions to promote your own view as if the statement is true is being as we put a fool. Sorry who would be the the bigger fool, the person that is fooled by a fool or the fool? Needless to say hiding a lie inside an ocean of truth does not make the lie true it only shows your personal need to try to deceive.

Immaculate conception refers to Mary being born without original sin. That is basic catholic dogma.

Simon enjoy your videos and get a lot of enjoyment from them but you are wrong that the Bible doesn't tell about the Virgin Birth of Christ. The Bible tells us in the book of Isaiah about the Savior coming from from a Virgin Birth. Hope this clears this up

I'm always surprised to be reminded of there being people many centuries ago who were able to translate from one language into another. I know that there are easy ways to acquire a second, third and so forth language but still it strikes me as hardly believable that there were people who had the time, money, and everything else it needs to either be taught another language by a tutor or to go abroad, possibly to another continent, and learn the local language. The same goes for traveling far in general. I mean, what kind of 8th or 13th century Europeans were able to spend months traveling to Eastern Asia and places like that?

Marie Lastname People of means, obviously, or people with patrons or sponsors of means. People were building roads, castles, cathedrals, great cities, raising armies, paying scholars to copy books. There were merchants, doctors, engineers, artists, writers, accountants, banks. Most people couldn’t afford travel or education, and many were not permitted it, but there were still a lot who could. Today there are people who regularly jet around the world, spending sums on travel that dwarf the average income of Americans. Some are wealthy, some have jobs who pay for it, some scrounge for deals, discounts. It is no different, only we are far wealthier today, so there are more of these people.

What you write sounds natural and not at all like completely new information to me. It's probably just one of those things I just can't wrap my head around. As a kid I read a Donald Duck version of Marco Polo's travel several times and the older I got the more I wondered how it was possible for him and his travel companions to travel this far and through regions this foreign to them. I also know from experience that it is possible to spend time in regions of the world where the locals don't speak your native language, you don't speak theirs and at least one, sometimes even both parties have a very limited vocabulary in a shared foreign language and still be able to communicate sufficiently well enough. But in theory it seems hardly possible to me. I know this doesn't make a lot of sense.

Marie Lastnam, I think I know what you mean, just ignore the nice people who are giving you grief, LOL! In my readings of Greek and other ancient (?) texts I too have been impressed. While we think of ourselves as living in the Information Age, being enlightened, etc., peoples of yesteryear throughout history were a lot smarter than I thought they were when I was young. They were in fact damn impressive!

11:11 - 11:15 _"This unique window of oppoortunity gave Pope Innocent IV a chance to exercise his influence - or so he thought."_ Pseudo-empathy. You have no reason to attribute to Innocent IV any calculation Kublai would be in awe of his influence, of which, in China and Mongolia he had none and knew he had none. I think it was St Joan of Arc who once said (as did St Catherine of Siena and some more, unless I misrecall) "my mission is to tell, not to convince". The Pope had to speak up for the truth even if with Kublai Khan he had humanly speaking as little chance to be heard as ... me or Pope Michael by Antipope "Francis" Bergoglio (if not less). So, you are reading into his mind a motive which was not there. Incidentally, this pseudo-empathy happens to coincide with what would make him look ridiculous. Would it be pseudo-empathetic on my part to presume this might not be quite a fortuitous coincidence?
