10 Fascinating Facts About Sphynx Cats
1. They’re actually not ‘hairless’
Although Sphynx cats are generally referred to as being “hairless,” that’s actually not the case. Sphynxes are covered in a fine layer of super soft fuzz. It’s super soft to the touch and has a texture similar to suede.
2. They are not from Egypt
Despite what their name insinuates, this cat breed is actually not from Egypt (where the Sphynx statue is located). The Sphynx actually originated in Toronto, Canada. According to The Cat Fancier’s Association, “in 1966 a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten in Toronto Canada. It was discovered to be a natural genetic mutation and the Sphynx cat, as we know it today, came into existence.”
3. They’re four degrees warmer than other cats
Due to the fact that they don’t have thick fur coats, their body temperature is naturally four-degrees warmer than other cat breeds. This makes them wonderful buddies to cuddle with!
4. They require a weekly bath
Even though Sphynx cats don’t have traditional fur, their bodies still produce a natural oil. For most cat breeds, this oil keeps their fur soft and sleek, but for a Sphynx, it builds up and forms a greasy film on their bodies. It’s important for owners to give them a weekly bath to keep them clean, making sure to pay special attention to their sensitive, mostly hairless ears.
5. They like to eat - a lot.
This unique cat breed tends to constantly be noshing, and it’s actually because they need to! Since their body temperature is higher than other cats, their body requires more energy to keep up that heat. It’s their natural way of keeping their internal temps up high.
6. They are not hypoallergenic
Since people think Sphynxes are hairless, they also assume that they are hypoallergenic; however, this is not the case. Their skin still produces dander which is the irritant that bothers people with allergies.
7. They like to go on walks
Sphynx cats have many dog-like qualities and characteristics, and one of them is the fact that they enjoy going for walks!
8. They come in lots of patterns and colors
Even though they don’t have regular fur like other cat breeds, the Sphynx still comes in many different patterns and colors due to the pigment in their skin. Some have spots, others have patterns, and some are even multi-colored. Like other cat breeds, their ‘coats’ can be very diverse.
9. They love to chit-chat
Unlike the Sphynx statue, this cat breed is definitely not stoic and quiet. In fact, they can be quite noisy as they love to talk with you back and forth.
10. They’re better off with their own cat beds
As we mentioned, the Sphynx cat breed produces oils on their skin that can rub off on your sheets and linens causing oil stains. So, unless you don’t mind washing your sheets and bedding on a regular basis, it’s best to give them their own designated sleeping area.
