Good honest tips here...... I agree, there are far too many people over using frequency separation, and ending up with totally unrealistic skin...

Test shoots is the one I get confused these days. Agencies asked for test shoots but never say what look they want so it's really hard for me to figure out what do they actually want.

It can be very hard at times! I usually try to start off with a few natural tests and then try to move into something more creative. By that point the agency would be more familiar with my work and hopefully be more inclined to allow me to have a bit more creative freedom. ☺
