Franklin Pierce was by far the saddest president to research, you have to wonder if he lived a happier life would he have been a better president?

I always found it hypocritical of the Whigs to be against the Mexican-American War but nominate 2 war heroes from that very war.

@@deplorabledegenerate2630 That's the thing they weren't just against the war but strongly against the idea of even going to war even Abraham Lincoln called for peace against a war that they believed was unjustified and unprovoked yet as soon as the war is over they all of the sudden decide to nominate Zachary Taylor who is arguably the most famous general from that war. He had no political experience and no interest in politics whatsoever. He hadn't even voted in any election beforehand. Then, later on, they do that again, but with Winfield Scott. Taylor was lucky to win, seeing as he was 64, and Scott was lucky he even got nominated because he was also in his 60s.

The whigs were a really scattered party ideologically since its purpose was basically to oppose the Jacksonian Democrats. You also had people like Grant who fought in the war but were super opposed to it

My favorite President to read about. He lived a truly fascinating and yet sad life. I have visited his home town and his grave. If I were to make a movie about him, I would cast Peter Weller as Pierce in his later years.

Only president in history to be elected to the office (as opposed to ascending mid-term) only to then fail to even be renominated by his own party. Incredible.

I would say yes. His drinking habits must have picked up from trauma from the death of his sons. Chances are, he might stop his addiction if all his sons were alive.

It's an anomaly that he became president in the first place. No doubt he was an intelligent man, but to run a country as a drunk throughout his career from the military to being head of state is mind boggling. George W. had problems with alcohol, he even hit his father up over a dispute.

I knew he was the 14th president and that he was an alcoholic, and that's pretty much it. Never known about his personal life until this video. That's horrible about his children! I didn't find him particularly interesting before but I might have to read up on him a little more.

The only thing with having Grant say these things about Pierce, is that Grant said nice things about almost everyone and tried to see the best in people. So take that with a grain of salt.
