It is fair enough to not particularly "care" about SACD playback, but it is also pretty easy to pick up a hybrid SACD/CD to have a listen. I picked up the Technics SL-G700 as my digital front end a couple years back, mostly for my 2000+ CD library, and the upshot is I now have a small 30-40 library of SACDs to go with it, though I admit if you are not a Classical, classic Jazz or classic Rock listener your choices will be limited. However, it is a ton of fun and, honestly, the SACD provide the best sound of any format I've ever heard (and yes, I got a nice vinyl setup which I also love.) 2023 should be a blast! Looking forward to seeing what you get to show us.

John, you do an exceptionally good job and many of the brands you have in end up on my short list for new kit. Remember that, as many grumpy people there are In comments sections, that’s partly a manifestation of response bias. I for one love what you’re doing and wish you the best

Great stuff John. I, for one, would love to hear your testimony on a speaker review/comparison with a super high efficiency design that is made to be home built. And as you were mentioning with the Cambridge turntable the whole personal affinity thing with components hits a 10 out of 10 when you invest your time in putting together your own gear. Having two subwoofers improved the sound in my room, i was limited to were i could put the subwoofers, but using REW room calibration software and a mic i discovered that placing one subwoofer front left and the second rear right did the best job of flattening out a large dip i had on the chart. once that was done i then used the room calibration software that came with my Denon X7200WA receiver, and bang the whole system sounded the best it ever had for me anyway, to the point i was very content, where as up until then i was struggling to get the whole system to sound how i wanted.

John I have to chip in about your DALI Rubicon 5 choice. I own the Rubicon 2’s and tested the 2’s and 5’s side by side, in the same room, driven by my Anthem MRX710 in stereo. I loved the short visual form factor of the 5’s and the appeal of the dual tweeters, but in practice the 5’s were surprisingly flat and disappointing when compared to the smaller 2’s. The Rubicon 2’s had a punchier, fleshier and bouncier fun sense to its bass response, and it was just more fun and foot-tapping to listen to. Anything with a beat the 2’s just locked onto: they just lapped up electronica, 70’s disco and funk for example. By contrast, if John Major was a speaker, he would be the Rubicon 5’s. It was a matter of fact presentation, and the ribbon tweeter brought absolutely nothing extra in terms of tonality or dispersion. I was genuinely surprised by this. So just from my own experience, and I acknowledge that it’s just my sole opinion among 1000’s of opinions, but I think you’d have a lot more fun with the Rubicon 2’s. They just make you smile. They’re incredibly good at macro dynamics, and in my use case, perform very well indeed for a mix of 2.0 music, 2.1 music and 5.1 movie use. And their bass response in my 3.6m x 5m room is just about acceptable. They would IMO sound at their best in a slightly larger room than mine, and I think your room size would be spot on. If you are absolutely determined to still go for the Rubicon 5’s, I can only suggest that you power them with a very powerful high-current delivery amp indeed that may just get the things going. But for me, it was the 2’s all the way.

Wow! Really looking forward to staying current with your channel in 2023! I auditioned the previous generation but higher line Bowers end Wilkins 702 S2. In my home for a month. I liked the clarity but found them a little edgy, metallic. I also found the bass impact limited. I believe the new 703 S3 has a newly designed tweeter and perhaps a bottom port. So it may have improved these things. Yet, when I heard them at a dealer and compared him to the new 702 S3, I found them to be significantly inferior. If you are willing to stretch to a $7,000 speaker pair of speakers, I would recommend the next level in the 700 series

It is exactly the same as an AMT i.e. an "Air Motion Transformer" I have used the Oskar Heil AMTs & replaced their pleated ribbons, these clearly work on the exact same design principle. Interestingly, to me at at least, Oskar Heil who invented the F.E.T. had opened up & studied the common frog... (to study it's larynx & vocal diaphragm to find out how it's croaking sound carries so far with such a minimal movement) ...to come to the original design of his AMT. The larger ones can dip down to 1.1'Khz or 900'hz with steeper x/over. Clever dude was Oskar (with a 'K')

You’ve never auditioned/reviewed a speaker system, while out for a few years now, and ridiculously inexpensive at its original price of 1299 a pair(now 1499us), the KLH Kendall Floor-standing Loudspeakers are, of all the systems I’ve heard under 3 grand is the most accurate and full range…by far!! Yes I own them after several months of auditioning speakers from Monitor, B&W, Focal and others. It won’t win any awards for beauty, but it’s a no nonsense, straight up killer of a system that will leave you scratching your head!! The Model 5’s nostalgia overshadowed this system and it’s gone under the wire, for the most part. At 63, I’ve owned and heard many systems, and the Kendalls are almost a perfect speaker…small footprint, easy to set up, in black disappears at night, superb imaging and a midrange that does to vocals what few speakers do at any price range. I just hope how inexpensive they are keeps you from taking a look-see. Cheers mate, love your reviews!
