@@StellasEncounter my favorite are Babymetal and Deco27. I love a ton of all female Japanese metal bands. Nemophila, Hanabie, Band-Maid etc etc. I saw Band-Maid in Seattle Oct 12th. As a 49 year old American. Ado is fantastic too. Usseewa isn't metal but it might as well be. I am getting into Vocaloid a fair amount. I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku. I love the music for the rythm video game Muse Dash. It's a mix of Japanese vocaloid and Chinese...pop? I don't like Japanese rock that is too similar to American rock. I don't want to hear American rock. Heard it. I want something unique. I have some videos up that I took at Band-Maid in Seattle.

Nice! I remember the Pizzicato Five. One group you didn't mention, but understandably so because they aren't quite Japanese, is Cibo Matto. They got some play on MTV back in the 90's. They were an American band from New York City fronted by two Japanese expatriates, Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori. They collaborated with the Beastie Boys on side projects and Sean Lennon joined their band towards the end of that decade. For a taste, check out their tunes "Sugar Water", "Spoon", and "Sci-Fi Wasabi". I saw Melt-Banana play back in the nineties in front of maybe just over a hundred people. So much energy in such a tiny package! As it happened they ended up opening for a Mariachi band too of all things. Mariachi, in case you are unfamiliar with that music, is traditional Mexican music -- ballads and polkas -- played on acoustic instruments, sometimes featuring violins and trumpets -- very very different from Japanese noise rock. From what I recall, Melt-Banana was just kicking off their tour and had only flown in from Japan to California the day before. They played a gig the night before in San Francisco with another band -- whose name I don't remember -- with members originally from Fresno where I live. The other band was supposed to open the show in Fresno and they did, no problem. Good straight ahead hard-punk-funk rock -- they might have used a bagpipe in one song too, but my recollection of all the details is fuzzy. As they played the word came down that Melt-Banana got lost on the highway on their way to the gig. So the guy producing the show hired a Mariachi band to fill in for them at the last minute. That meant paying the Mariachi band several hundred bucks up front easily. The Mariachi band showed up. Then Melt-Banana showed up. It was probably half way to midnight by that time. Since Melt-Banana was the draw they got to play first. And wow did they play! Furious! The guys in the Mariachi band were shocked by them but digging it just the same. "Paint it Black" was lit! The Mariachi band went on stage twenty minutes afterward give or take. It made no sense to pay them and then not have them play, so they did. Melt-Banana stuck around for a beer too. Then they split for their lodgings. The Mariachi band played til closing time. It was a music experience for me on par with seeing The Sun Ra Arkestra when I was in college.

A question I have always wondered is if the movie Lost in Translation had a huge impact in the shoegaze scene in Japan or if shoegaze was pretty popular in Tokyo prior to that movie. I feel like Lost in Translation got a lot of millennials exposed to shoegazing and personally I feel the japanese shoegazing bands do it the best. My favorite Japanese bands are Cattle, Dive, Pasteboard, Toe, Yuragi, Tokyo Shoegazer, and Lemon's Chair. Pastel Blue 'Blue Demos' is my favorite Japanese album. Lastly, I have to say Akira Yamaoka's work he did in all the Silent Hill games is one of the reasons why the first four Silent Hill games are so iconic. His music kind of reminds me of my favorite grunge album of all time, Sponge 'Rotting Pinata.'

I think it maybe a case of "some from column A, some from column B". In many places I don't doubt that a movie would have an impact, but Tokyo is very used to appearing in movies, so I'm not sure to say that it would have 'that' much of an impact. Having said that, its a great movie with a fantastic take on wistful romance so it might have resonated. in either event its a fun thought experiment. Thanks for raising it! It’ll be interesting to see what you find from Brazilian music. Bossa nova is seen as music without personality that is designed to be as inoffensive and boring as possible but João Gilberto as perhaps the most obvious choice wrote and performed some pretty touching and meaningful music. With a hold on it, I’d then scoot over to his 1973 self-titled album which is an almost meta reinterpretation of who he was as a musician. In it he stretches out simple standard bossa songs to last several minutes through pure repetition that’s driven by sparse, minimalist percussion/accompaniment and these hushed but prominent vocals that give it a greater intimacy. He combines this with a few eerie and dreamlike tracks without lyrics that add to it as a full album experience, and caps it off with Izaura, a track so gorgeous that it singlehandedly brings the album together enough to make it a classic. I mention it at length because it deconstructs the genre in a way artists like Burial would do to their own. I can’t really think of anyone else who made music so coolly self-aware and reflective at that time. I recommend Mercenárias primarily for their pre-debut demo EP that you can find on KZitem as one of the best punk recordings of all-time. Furious, herkyjerky, brief and clever. It’s got the best qualities of Liliput, Spiral Scratch, Carambolage, Downtown Boys, Minor Threat, all sorts. Linn da Quebrada is worth keeping an eye on. Her debut was strong bandcamp Carioca pop and she’s since been making pop with more sophisticated production, like a more interesting Arca to me. Would be great to go beyond the tropicália and not-too-dissimilar fellow travellers such as Chico Buarque, but one maybe worth mentioning is Acabou Chorare by Novos Baianos because their hits have this unbelievable mix of being obvious ‘60s classics while having the songwriting elements of pop bangers from the ‘90s and beyond in how they work with instrumentation and building up their song structures. Os Mutantes are one of the best psychedelic bands in the world of course, but again it’d be great to go beyond that one album of theirs and the Panis et Circensis collab as all their other earlier records are better and more consistent for me. Plus on the topic of Rita Lee it is worth plugging her old schoolmate’s lone single, Suely e os Kantikus’ Que Bacana/Esperanto, as it’s genuinely perfect, having been hidden from the world for 55 years or so because their sound was so distorted and strange that it left no positive impression on a ‘60s audience. Think Velvet Underground with Link Wray and the United States of America in tow with Czech new wave vibes…

Great video! Was really cool to get more info on Les Rallizes Denudes... listened to them a lot but didnt really know anything about them.. and I love them even more now. Also have a few new bands to check out like Happy End and Shonen Knife... And based on this I think you should check out Bloodthirsty Butchers! They were amazing and also featured Hisako from Number girl on at least one of their albums.

Lucie, Too is touring Europe right now. I will check out the others. I suggest you might like Glim Spanky and Sokoninaru. My own favorites are in the hard rock & metal category like Band-Maid, Nemophila, Lovebites, Babymetal, Unlucky Morpheus, Gacharic Spin, and many, many others.
Very cool list, mostly all new to me. Thanks for putting this together! My favorite Japanese bands: Kikagaku Moyo: pysch, folk, krautrock Nagisa Ni Te: dreamy indie psych rock Mei Ehara, Satoko Shibata: groovy indie pop with beautiful melodies

Great list Stella, congratulations!!! I recommend three excellent bands from Japan: OTOBOKE BEAVER, THE PILLOWS and G-SCHMITT. Otoboke Beaver is an amazing punk band made up only of girls, similar to Shonen Knife. But the sound is very strong and many lyrics are critical of Japanese society, especially the objectification of women. The album Itekoma Hits is certainly the best rock album released in 2019! The Pillows.......... Probably one of the most amazing bands of the universe!!!! Power pop hasn't been the same since Weezer's heyday, but these guys prove they know how to make good rock. They gained great notoriety for the FLCL anime soundtrack. I strongly recommend the band and the animation. G-Schmitt is a gothic rock gem. Very sophisticated and one of the few bands representing this style in Japan. It has very interesting and deep lyrics. Hope you like!

Thank you for the recs, I like Otoboke Beaver!! :) Interesting to know their lyrics are critical, which is certainly a good thing! I've heard Weezer are very popular in Japan, it seems The Pillows came way earlier than Weezer.

@@StellasEncounter Exactly!! The Pillows emerged before Weezer, but with a sound far removed from power pop. I believe that by consuming a lot of the American alternative scene of the early 90's they got their consecrated aesthetic. Something that happened in a very similar way with Blur in the eponymous 1997 album.

Another cool path of Japanese bands from 80s and early 90s is Transworld Records releases, a lot of post punk, goth/darwave, etc. Label was founded by Kitamura Masashi. Unfortunately, most the bands only had 1 or 2 EPs. Ill Bone, Bardol Thodol, Hungry Ghost, Canus Lupus, Differance. Another on the goth/ post punk is Gille' Love, later changed to Fiction and singer Lucifer Luscious Violenue did several solo releases, often with guitarist Gardie.

They were one of, if not the first, female punk rock band (excluding the drummer) with the 3 female founders, Vivi (bass), Kotome (guitar), and Yuri (vocals). Another band I like besides Shonen Knife is the all girl band named Tsushimamire.

Hi Stella, your videos always explore first class music with a decent dose of humour to lighten the mood. It was a nice touch to begin your review of Japanese music with Les Rallizes Denudes and highlighting a bit of the somewhat unusual backstory. One of the most interesting things about that group is the sense of mystery surrounding the way it approached art and life. Recording a large amount of material over an extended period of time and not officially releasing any of it completely subverts how a band is expected to communicate with its audience. There is something very 'punk rock' about that. Guitarist and band leader Takashi Mizutani maintained this approach over decades, which is really quite inspirational in its own way. One of my favourite Mizutani signature compositions is 'Night of the Assassins' with guitar fireworks riding a groovy riff that you include a snippet of at the start of the video. Les Rallizes Denudes existed far outside the mainstream and that is a major part of the appeal. But there is so much more when it comes to exploring postwar Japanese music. If you haven't already, check out Julian Cope's landmark book on this subject titled 'Japrocksampler'. Until I read it I had no idea there were a whole bunch of Japanese groups in the late 60s-early 70s taking inspiration from bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and The Stooges as well as 60s Californian psychedelia and creating their own culturally shaped version of heavy music. There are so many bands worth checking out but you might like the 1971 very rockin' album 'Satori' from Flower Travellin' Band. Great stuff. As for more contemporary groups you might like the 1991 album 'Out' from White Heaven, which has a slow burn indie rock vibe with excellent guitar work from Michio Kurihara. Also, the P.S.F label put out a bunch of mind warping comps throughout the 1990s called 'Tokyo Flashback' which feature a bunch of supercool Japanese bands a generation on from all those groundbreaking forerunners discussed in Julian Cope's book. Oh, and if you haven't already check out Boris who have recorded a huge number of albums and go about reshaping musical styles such as speed punk and shoegaze. I saw them perform at a small club in Sydney and they were fantastic! You mention exploring music scenes in other countries and Australia is well worth checking out. From the mid 1970s until the late 1990s Australia was home to many great punk, post punk and indie artists! Two bands - The Saints and Radio Birdman - deserve special mention for spearheading the birth of Australian alternative music.
@StellasEncounter

Hi Daniel, thank you for your comment! Well-written as always! Les Rallizes have so many interesting and unique anecdotes that I feel like sometimes they outshine their music, especially on youtube where views and viewers’ attention is of primary importance that their hijacking airplane story has become overwhelming (I am also guilty of this). But as you said, too, their music is innovative, stylish and ahead of their time. Thanks for recommending Julian Cope’s book, I know he has a famous book about Krautrock. I’d love to explore more about Japan’s modern music! Japan is perhaps the most westernized Asian country and I feel their rock music certainly has fusioned with 60s 70s American classic/psy rock greatly. While Chinese modern rock are more influenced by late 70s post punk to 2000s alternative rock. I’d love to do a video about Australian bands! I like the sound of The Saints, thank you for the recommendations!! :D I have never really got into Nick Cave and I can proudly admit I enjoy INXS and even Men at Work more than Nick Cave’s macabre vampire rock. Pavement are influenced by The Clean from New Zealand. Would like to know are there any Australian indie bands similar to the sound of Pavement?
@danielbigna5469
Жыл бұрын
Hi Stella, thanks for taking the time to respond. It makes total sense that you cannot provide an entire history in one KZitem video, but it's really more about the fact that your selections are very good and you are talking about this kind of music at all! I haven't read Julian Cope's book on Krautrock but his history of the Japanese music scene is highly detailed with some outstanding recommendations. Its focus is primarily on those first generation groups that would come to influence more contemporary Japanese bands like Boris and Acid Mothers Temple. It's really interesting that you sometimes make comparisons with contemporary Chinese bands as you did in your shoegaze video about which I know nothing at all! As for the Australian music scene, this really does require a much more detailed response. There is so much quality punk and post punk music to explore that pretty much started in the early to mid 1970s with bands like The Saints and Radio Birdman who were influenced by harder edged US groups like The Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls etc. I am a Nick Cave fan but thought your comment that you prefer INXS and Men at Work was fair as enjoying music is all about mixing things up! What I like about The Birthday Party is that the band succeeded in taking the full-on proto-punk of The Stooges to an even further extreme and were content to explore the very outer reaches of rocknroll! You are absolutely right that Pavement was influenced by indie New Zealand bands like The Clean and Tall Dwarfs. The New Zealand music scene centred around the Flying Nun label is a fascinating story in its own right. One NZ band you might really like is The Dead C who began recording albums in the late 1980s and are like a lo-fi Sonic Youth but even further out there! Your question about the influence of a band like Pavement on Australian indie rock is actually not so easy to answer. My personal view is that Australian alternative music as a dynamic form began to trail off in the late 1990s but that's partly because what came before then was so good. Two of the better indie bands of that time are the Queensland group Custard and the Melbourne band Magic Dirt, but in some ways it's better to go back a bit and check out a band like The Scientists who began recording in the late 1970s and played intense, swampy grunge well before the Seattle scene! Scientists founder Kim Salmon played in a number of other first rate Australian groups such as The Beasts of Bourbon and The Surrealists, both very good. There is so much to talk about here, apologies for the long response Stella! By the way, I have been trying to figure out how much I like the latest Archers of Loaf album when compared to their earlier stuff!
@StellasEncounter
Жыл бұрын
Haha, the INXS and men at work comment was more because I really don't know much Australian music yet, and they are the two that were on top of my mind. Oh, and I love Dirty Three! As for Nick Cave, I think he's a great performer, and like his performance on the movie "Wings of Desire", but I think he is kind of style/aesthetic and format over content, happy to hear different opinions! I like Dead C, thanks for rec! And The Scientists are great find too, like a mix of The Byrds and The Soft Boys. The accent is fun. No need to apologize! :) I love the new AoL album, admittedly I'm not as obsessed as with their 90s albums, but I think I just have some love for the band that I'm simply ecstatic to listen to a newer version of Loaf. *hearty eyes* How do you think of the new album?
@danielbigna5469
Жыл бұрын
Hi Stella, it's pleasing you have an awareness of Aust groups like The Dirty Three and The Scientists. Both groups are a good entry point to an exploration of genuinely creative Australian music that transcends awful Aussie exports like Kylie Minogue! In 2016 the Numero Group label put out a collection of Scientists recordings titled 'A Place Called Bad', which trace the development of the band from power-pop like beginnings to more intense sonic eruptions over time. Also pleased you mentioned 'Wings of Desire'. What a great piece of cinema it is! There is another very good Australian group in that movie who relocated to Germany in the mid 1980s called Crime and the City Solution featuring Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S Howard. On another note, the more I listen to the new Archers of Loaf album, the more I like it. I found the production on the louder songs to be a bit more processed than I was expecting. The guitars still have an edge but the sound is more integrated, which I guess reflects a maturing in the songwriting. After all, 'Icky Mettle' came out quite a long time ago! The songs I like the most on the new album are the quieter, more atmospheric ones like 'Aimee' and the album closer 'War is wide open'. It is definitely a decent album that deserves further listens. 'Indie rock' is such a loose term these days I wonder if anyone really knows anymore how to properly define it. Could that be true?
