I'm still learning chords and progression, what does 11 = 4 mean? Like 4 : 3 is major, 3 : 4 minor, 11 = 4?
@dr.guyshkolnik_composer
10 ай бұрын
No, it means that when we write 4, as in “Csus4”, we play a note that is 4 steps above note C. This note is F (in the case of the chord Csus4, we play it instead of note 3 - E but that’s for another video). Anyways, back to note 4 - F, when we play it an octave higher, counting from the same C note, the distance now is 11 note. It’s the same F, (that’s why I wrote 4 = 11) but played an octave higher. Why play it an octave higher? because we may add more notes before it, like 7 and 9. Makes sense?

Isn't it more of a Dm9/G? Hybrid chord? Because imo, you define a chord based on his 3rd and 7th. And you omit the 3rd and put 9th and 11th, and you resolve them on b9 and 3 where it would actually make more sense to be a V. So it would be a II - V - I in my opinion. Of course, I'm just arguing semantics lmao, it's not that important, but it was just to know the opinion of people who might not think like me😁
@annamakesmusic
Жыл бұрын
I’m not an expert but G13sus4 and Dm9/G are just two ways to notate the same chord. The chord tones 13579 in a d minor chord become 5-7-9-11-13 of the G dominant chord. There’s no third so you call the 11 a sus4 instead. Adding the g in the bass is what changes it from a minor 2 chord to a dominant chord. I’m not sure if that’s a helpful way to explain but hope i could provide some clarity
@annamakesmusic
Жыл бұрын
You could also omit the 5th and notate G13sus4 as Fmaj7/G. Slash chords are usually either just inversions or sus chords (at least that has been my experience when analyzing them in charts)
@Danielshay
Жыл бұрын
@@annamakesmusic Thank you! Loved that answer! I think what I meant (it's been a long time since I've commented haha) is that it feels like a II V I, so that's why i would call the first chord a Dm9/G. But it is technically the same because a V can be divided into a II V and vice versa. So, however we look at it, it's a V I. You're right! Have a lovely day :)

5 ай бұрын
If it’s G13 for example that man’s you play note G in the bass (with the left hand) and on top you count 13 notes from G moving up. That m will get you to E. In between we add the 7 - note F (7 is an important note) and the 3 - note B. That’s the minimum for playing this chord, usually in this order: G (left hand) F - B - E (right hand) A13 = all the note a whole tone up: A - G - C# - F#

Really nice, really, really nice! I have suggestion. Try playing in E flat on top so that you have a flat 13 chord. And then when you play the C maj chord, you will lower that E flat to de natural which gives you a C maj 9 chord. The chromaticism of E natural to E flat to D natural is really dramatic.
@Drummer9731

You labeled the progression incorrectly . It’s really a ii-V-I. Dm9/G G7b9 Cmaj7
@dr.guyshkolnik_composer

Once you have G in the bass it’s not a ii. It’s a V - I progression. It’s true that if you play D in the bass, it becomes a Dm9 chord.
